Match Preview | Essex Eagles v Glamorgan

Essex Eagles posted their first points of the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast competition when Somerset were defeated by 22 runs at The Cloudfm County Ground on Thursday night.

That success ended back-to-back defeats by Surrey and Kent Spitfires, but the Eagles have an early opportunity to extend their winning run when they entertain Glamorgan at Chelmsford on Sunday with a scheduled start time of 2:30pm.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood has named the same 14-man squad that turned up trumps on Thursday and admitted that he was delighted to get the Eagles’ T20 Blast campaign up and running with the win.

“To register our first win in the competition is satisfying and bounce back after two defeats shows what character we have in our dressing room,” he said.

“It’s never nice to lose, we lost what was a fantastic game against Surrey before we were comprehensively beaten by Kent Spitfires. Since that second defeat, we worked and practiced really hard and got the result we wanted.

“You have to face up to the fact that you are going to lose games of Twenty20 cricket, it’s as simple as that and I accept it but to me, it’s more about the character the lads show.

“If they keep driving forward and practicing as hard as they did in the two days leading up to that Somerset match, then hopefully we’ll win more games than we lose.

“It was a marked improvement on our first couple of matches. I thought that we bowled beautifully against Somerset to defend that total of 170 for 6, there were good contributions from every member of our attack.

“Let’s not forget our batters, obviously Tendo (Ryan ten Doeschate) was outstanding and the guys played well around him. What I did like was the intent we showed right the way through.

“We were good in the field as well, we took some very good catches so overall, I’m pleased but now we have to keep driving all that forward.”

Tickets for this match are sold out with play set to get underway at 2:30pm. Gates will be open from 12:30pm with activities for all the family taking place in the main car park throughout the day.

Tendo praises his bowling attack after Somerset win

Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate praised his bowling attack for their part in the 22-run victory over Somerset on Thursday evening. The skipper stuck with the same bowlers from the games against Surrey and Kent Spitfires and the performance all came together to record a first win.

He said: “Mohammad Amir showed he’s world-class, he went for 17 there. Harmy bowled nicely, a tad on the expensive side, but crucial wickets. It was always going to be a challenge to defend with that short boundary and Ravi deserves a special mention for bowling his four overs all from that end as well.

“In fairness I think we misread the wicket a little bit. I don’t think it was a 185 wicket. I certainly felt at the halfway stage a little disappointed. But you saw the ball stick in the surface a tiny bit and I thought we exploited that very well. We held our lengths well. It wasn’t a typical Chelmsford wicket where you can hit through the line because the boundary was too small for that, so it’s probably balanced out quite nicely.

“I’d like to see the top-order get going a little bit. It’s crucially important in T20 cricket. In a perfect world myself, Ash. Fozzy and Paul Walter would just deliver the finishing touches. But we’ve relied heavily on the top three in the past – someone like Tom Westley has been leading run-scorer at the club for the last three or four years. It’s great to see Ravi in the runs again, his consistency is starting to come through there.

“It’s all looking all right, but there’s plenty of room for improvement. The second half of the game with the ball was our best showing for a long time.”

Tendo was pleased with the win after falling short in the opening two games, and added: “We’d put ourselves under pressure by losing the first two but we kind of embraced it. Certainly, going three down in a 14-game competition would have given us a lot of work to do. But if you win half your games you’ve got a chance, but Sunday [against Glamorgan] is a big game for us to go two in two.”

WATCH | Zaidi pleased to get a first win on the board

Essex Cricket TV spoke to fan favourite, Ashar Zaidi after play to talk about the Eagles’ opening victory in the NatWest T20 Blast. The all-rounder smashes 35 runs off 25 balls, which included 3 sixes to help Essex to a total of 170 runs. Some tight bowling including 1-17 for Mohammad Amir help the Eagles to cruise to victory in front of another great crowd at The Cloudfm County Ground.

Zaidi enjoyed some time in the middle with a valuable partnership with skipper, Ryan ten Doeschate who he himself earned the Player of the Match award, hitting 56 runs.

Essex Eagles now come up against Glamorgan on Sunday in front of another sell-out crowd hoping to make it two wins in two before a trip to the Kia Oval next week.

Simon Harmer wins June DeVines Player of the Month

After an unbelievable month in an Essex shirt, unsurprisingly South African Simon Harmer was awarded the June DeVines Player of the Month.

Harmer scooped his second successive Player of the Month award and continues to prove his worth with stellar performances across all formats.

The South African took Essex to the top of the Specsavers County Championship First Division by taking 28 wickets in successive victories over Warwickshire and defending champions Middlesex.

He took 14-128 against Warwickshire, the best match figures for Essex since 1985, including 8-36 in the second innings.

Harmer’s career-best lasted only a week as he took 9-95 to spin Middlesex to defeat. His figures were the best for Essex since Mark Ilott took 9-19 against Northamptonshire at Luton in 1995.
