Match Report | England U19 v Sri Lanka U19

Sri Lanka clinched the Royal London U19 One-Day Series with one match to spare after a dramatic one-wicket victory at Chelmsford on Saturday.

The tourists looked in cruise control at 229 for three chasing England’s 315 for eight with opener Aviskha Fernando scoring a superb 117, but his dismissal started a collapse in the Sri Lanka ranks.

Shammu Ashan, who scored an unbeaten 60 in the first game at Wormsley, saw the tourists home with a composed knock of 77 from 75 balls.

England’s total was largely dominated by three contributions with George Hankins, George Bartlett and Tom Moores being the main run-scorers. Hankins contributed 98, Bartlett 85 and Moores 70.

Quickfire runs in the latter stages came from Zen Malik and Ollie Pope allowed England to set a difficult target.

But Sri Lanka made a good start to their reply, with an opening stand of 67 inside nine overs before Dilan Jayalath was caught on the square leg boundary by Malik for 41 from 34 balls.

That was the first of three boundary catches by Malik, and Bess bowled well to concede only 36 in his 10 overs. But England could not clinch the final wicket for victory and Sri Lanka stumbled across the line with five balls to spare.

Match Preview | Derbyshire v Essex

Essex will have a new face in their 12-man squad when they make the trip to meet Derbyshire for the Specsavers County Championship Division Two match starting at The 3aaa County Ground on Saturday.

Will Rhodes has joined the county on-loan from Yorkshire. The all-rounder, who bats left-handed and who is a right-arm medium-fast bowler, captained the England Under-19 team in the ICC 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Now 21 years-old, he has made 15 first-class appearances for the White Rose County, most recently in their match with Middlesex at Scarborough at the start of July.

Essex Head coach Chris Silverwood is delighted to add Rhodes to his squad.

“He is only young but he has already shown himself to be a fine all-rounder,” he said. “I worked with him a little bit when I was briefly involved with the England Under 19’s and he’s a really exciting talent. I’m sure that he’s going to prove a very useful addition to our squad in the next few weeks.

“Our bowling attack has been affected by injures and tiredness in the past few weeks so it will be good to have Will to give us a fresh pair of legs.

“We start the match on Saturday at the top of the table but with the narrowest of advantages although Kent, who are in second, have played one more match than ourselves. But there are a number of sides in the pack close behind and so the game with Derbyshire is the first of a number of must-win matches for us.

“We battled hard and showed a lot of character in our previous match when we got the draw with Sussex at Colchester and we’ll need those qualities throughout the remainder of the season.

“We are now getting to the business end of the season and the race for promotion is really hotting up now. But at the moment we are in pole position and we are desperately keen to ensure we stay there.”

A number of first team regulars have been ruled out of the trip to Derby. Jesse Ryder, Dan Lawrence and Matt Quinn are all sidelined through injury whilst David Masters is rested ahead of Wednesday’s Royal London Cup match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

With bowlers unavailable, it could pave the way for Paul Walter to make his first-class debut.  The 22 year-old left-arm paceman who only signed his first professional contract in June this year, has so far made 7 T20 Cup appearances but is now in contention for his first taste of County Championship action.

Will Rhodes signs on loan for rest of Specsavers CC season

Essex CCC are delighted to announce the loan signing of Will Rhodes from Yorkshire for the remainder of the Specsavers County Championship campaign.

The 21-year-old will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game against Derbyshire and look to make valuable contributions as the season progresses.

The young all-rounder made his List A and T20 debuts for Yorkshire during the 2013 season.

A left-handed bat and right-arm medium-fast bowler, Rhodes is an exciting product of the Yorkshire academy and captained England at the 2014 ICC U19 World Cup.

Chris Silverwood is thrilled that Rhodes decided to join the club and said: “Will is an exciting young all-rounder who we hope will contribute with both bat and ball for the remainder of the season.

“He is very highly thought of at Yorkshire but they are keen for him to get out and play some red-ball cricket, so we are pleased he decided to join the club. He will go straight into the squad for Saturday and we will pick a team according to the conditions.”

Yorkshire Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon felt it is a great chance for the all-rounder to play regular cricket.

He added: “We feel, as does Will, that this is a great opportunity to play first-team cricket and to improve as a player.

“It will be a great experience for him and hopefully will help to develop him further as an all-round cricketer.”

Warwickshire v Essex Eagles | Route To The QF

Both sides have a fairly similar record in the 2016 tournament heading into the quarter-final. Both teams with 4 wins & 1 abandonment. However The Eagles losing one compared to Warwickshire’s 2 after their dramatic tie with Somerset at The E.C.G.

Despite Essex finishing on 10 points, 1 more than Warwickshire they missed out on the top 2, resulting in the away quarter final. Whereas in the North-Group 9 points was enough to earn Warwickshire 2nd place and a home quarter-final.

After a fantastic start in the tournament Essex looked to be cruising to a home quarter-final with 3 wins and a tie after the first 4 games however the wheels came off slightly towards the latter stages of the group games and eventually had to settle for 3rd in the group.

Warwickshire on the other hand have been up and down throughout the group stages, never really showing consistent form but winning when it mattered to secure the home quarter-final.

Every game that The Eagles have won in the competition this year has been when batting second, all with no more than 1 over remaining in the innings.

Warwickshire also appear to enjoy chasing down totals as 3 of their 4 wins have come batting second.

Aaron Beard excited for home comforts

Aaron Beard hopes familiar surroundings in Chelmsford will help him and the rest of the England Under-19s team bounce back against Sri Lanka in the second match of the Royal London One-Day Series this weekend.

Beard was left unbeaten on 17 as England crumbled to 149 all out, and a 108-run defeat, in the first game of the series in Wormsley on Wednesday – which followed Sri Lanka’s victory in the second four-day match between the teams in Northampton.

But the Essex seamer is relishing the prospect of representing his country in his home town on Saturday.

“Definitely I’m looking forward to going back home after a good three and a half weeks on the road,” said Beard, who took four for 62 against the senior Sri Lankan team at Chelmsford on his first-class debut earlier this season.

“It will be good to see all the Essex boys and all my friends in Chelmsford and play at my home ground. I’m a five minute drive away – when I didn’t drive it was a 20-minute walk which is how I got to the ground.”

Beard hadn’t even started driving lessons when he first pulled on an England shirt at Chelmsford – in the four-day match they arranged against Essex to finalise preparations for the 2013 Ashes series, when he found himself fielding as 12th man as a 15-year-old schoolboy.

He has taken major steps forwards in his professional career this summer, making two appearances in the Specsavers County Championship after that memorable debut against Sri Lanka.

But he has still enjoyed the fresh experience of being in camp with the England Under-19 squad for the last few weeks, and following in the footsteps of Dan Lawrence and Callum Taylor who have become regulars in the Essex senior set-up this summer.

“I’m quite good friends with them both,” he added. “I look up to them because they’re both Essex lads and if you ask them questions about it they give you a clear and honest answer. They’ve obviously done well at this level so they’re very good people to talk to.

“It is different being in camp with England compared to playing for your county, and the cricket is different as well playing against the Sri Lankans.

“Some of the lads in our squad haven’t got professional contracts so they don’t train week in week out, so it’s a stepping stone to get them into that frame of mind for what they have to do and the levels they have to be at. It can be quite challenging at times which we’ve found out the last couple of games.

“250 was probably just below par on that pitch – if we batted first we were looking at 270, 280 as a good score. So we thought we kept them down to a reasonably good total. Obviously they had a couple of good partnerships which increased their score slightly but we thought coming into the next half of the game that we were in pole position ready to get a win under our belts.”

Andy Hurry, the head coach of the England Development Programme, identified the collapse against Sri Lanka’s spinners as the failing that the youngsters most urgently need to address.

“It is a different challenge for our players, facing high-quality spin – the sort of challenge that makes Under-19 international cricket so valuable,” he said.

“In the first one-day game at Wormsley, we obviously failed to make the adjustments, or to cope with the pressure being exerted by the Sri Lankans. So over the next 48 hours we’ll be challenging and working with all the players to think about their approach.”

The games starts at 10:30am and entry will be via donation to The Essex Cricket Foundation with all supporters urged to turn out and support the next generation of England cricketers.

The series then concludes on Tuesday at The Spitfire Ground, Kent with the game being broadcast live on Sky Sports.
