Under-18s make it a winning weekend for Essex Women

ECB Girls Under-18 National County T20, Finals Day

Haslegrave Ground, Loughborough
Sunday 10 September 2023

The Under-18s ensured Essex Women sides took home two trophies in as many days as they saw off North East Warriors and Hampshire at Finals Day of the ECB National County T20.

The victorious young Eagles’ XI contained three players who had earned a London Championship-clinching victory over Sussex in Brighton with the senior women’s first team the previous day.

Read on for the details of, and reports from, both matches.

Match Report:

Hollie Dring-Richardson crunched an unbeaten 59 off 49 balls to back up Bella Johnson’s bowling return of 4/21 as Essex comfortably saw off North East Warriors to progress to the National County T20 Final.

Sophia Mitchell sent down a double-wicket maiden to open the Warriors’ innings as she also claimed figures of 3/20, with the only knocks above 25 being Trudy Johnson’s top score of 38, and 28 from Grace Thompson.

Prisha Bedi continued the squeeze with 2/14 from her four overs, and despite a resistant stand of 60 in 47 balls for the third wicket between Johnson and Thompson, the total always felt below par.

That was proven in convincing fashion during Essex’s chase, as the young Eagles cruised to their target with almost three full overs to spare.

Dring-Richardson and Bella Howarth, who made 33, put on 62 for the first wicket in 57 deliveries, before Jessica Weatherspoon became the only Warriors bowler to take a wicket, removing Howarth via a Johnson catch.

That took nothing away from Dring-Richardson, however, as she continued on and brought up her 50 in 46 deliveries off the final ball of the 16th over.

She then capped off her match-winning display by being on strike for the winning runs, finding able support in the closing stages from captain Johnson, who made 15 not out.

Match Report:

An afternoon downpour failed to dampen Essex’s spirits as they triumphed over Hampshire in a reduced ten-over bash to seal the National County T20 title.

Once play finally did get underway, a stifling two-over return of 2/8 from Sally Chapman, along with Jessica Pugh’s 2/20, helped restrict Hampshire to 67-5 from their allotted overs.

Only Rachel King, who top-scored with 16, alongside captain Caitlin Chissell and Mia Clark, who both hit 10, made it into double figures for Hants.

Jasmine Westley also took a wicket, that of Talitha Stanley, to keep up the regular clatter and ensure Chissell’s side were unable to establish any real flow of runs.

Although Bella Howarth fell early in the young Eagles’ reply, semi-final standout Hollie Dring-Richardson hit 16 off 11 to make light of Hants’ struggles and provide some early impetus to the chase.

Her departure, caught behind by Clark off Stanley, failed to take anything out of Essex’s progress, however, and an unbroken 38 stand between Bella Johnson and Jessica Olorenshaw, made in 28 balls, sealed the trophy.

Olorenshaw, who hit 19 in that partnership next to her captain’s 22, finished the match, the day, and the tournament off with a flourish by hitting back-to-back fours off Katie Jones.

London Championship Table:

London Championship table

Match Report:

Katherine Speed took four wickets before Tilly Callaghan hit an unbeaten 74 as Essex earned a victory over Sussex in Brighton that confirmed their status as winners of the 2023 London Championship.

Speed returned figures of 4/39 from 9.5 overs as the hosts were dismissed for 188 in 49.5 overs, before Callaghan’s 121-ball knock saw the Eagles complete a successful chase with more than nine overs to spare.

Lucy Western, who made 53, was the only Sharks batter to pass 30, with the next-best scores being made by Daisy Gibb and captain Chiara Green, who contributed 27 and 22, respectively.

It was a dominant visiting bowling display, though, and further scalps for Callaghan and Grace Poole, who both claimed identical figures of 2/18, saw Sussex fall short of seeing out their 50 overs.

Poole removed openers Izzy Collis and Phoebe Wilkinson early, and Callaghan saw off Green for her first scalp as the home side slipped to 55-3.

In-play

Western led a recovery, sharing stands of 30 for the fourth wicket with Mollie Adams and 48 for the sixth with Gibb, posting her fifty in 85 balls before being bowled by Afra Rose Mohamed.

From there, it fell to Speed to run through the tail, taking the final four wickets for just 31 runs and sewing up Sussex’s time in the middle by bowling Faye Mullins with what would have been the innings’ penultimate ball.

Callaghan then underpinned Essex’s reply, sharing in two separate half-century partnerships and receiving support from Poole, who crunched a swift 35 in just 22 balls, before captain Kelly Castle hit the winning runs.

She started confidently alongside Speed as the duo put on 56 for the first wicket in 15 overs prior to Emily Spooner pinning Speed lbw for 22.

Partnerships of 42 with Sally Chapman and 24 with Scarlett Hughes followed, before, alongside Poole, Callaghan brought up her half-century in 99 deliveries.

Group with coaches 2 png

She was especially strong through third and behind square, though also unfurled two off-drives for four, but even as she continued through the sixties, Poole was on a one-woman mission at the other end.

Six of her 22 deliveries were smashed to the fence, including one off Gibb that went all the way for six, and by the time she holed out to Western off Green, victory was almost secured.

Castle provided the final piece of the puzzle as she and Callaghan took Essex over the line, with the skipper driving her counterpart Green for four to finish with a flourish.

The five-team round-robin tournament was first played in 2021, and Kelly Castle’s Eagles are its third victors after Kent and Surrey won its first and second iterations, respectively.

Sussex are still to play Middlesex before the final table will be decided, but with Essex now a comfortable 25 points clear of second-placed Kent, and Sussex six further back, the destination of the trophy is already decided.

JE3 Foundation & Boundary Club fund defibrillators at The Cloud County Ground

The Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation and the Essex Boundary Club have provided funding for the installation of two new external defibrillators at The Cloud County Ground.

The defibrillators, which are an essential component of life-saving first-aid in the case of a cardiac arrest, will be located behind the scoreboard at the River End of the ground and in the vicinity of the Doug Insole Pavilion.

Justin Edinburgh was a former footballer and manager from Essex who tragically suffered a cardiac arrest in 2019, and his legacy is now honoured through the Foundation that bears his name, also known as the JE3 Foundation.

The Foundation’s goal, in its own words, is increased survival following cardiac arrest. In the UK, more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, and survival rates are just 1 in 10. Early intervention through CPR and defibrillators can double the chances of survival.

It has been supported in providing funding for the external defibrillators at The Cloud County Ground by the Boundary Club, the official supporters’ club of Essex Cricket.

Charlie Edinburgh, son of Justin and CEO of the JE3 Foundation, said: ““We are extremely proud to be able to provide two potentially life-saving pieces of equipment to the club, it’s a relationship which we really see going from strength to strength.

“These latest donations add to the two previously donated to the city centre, which now sees our hard work coming into fruition throughout Chelmsford as a city.

“It’s amazing to be working with the Essex Boundary Club in funding these latest donations. I would like to thank everyone for making JE3 feel so welcome, it was a real pleasure to present these two defibrillators to the club on such a fine occasion.’

Dan Feist, Cricket Operations Director at Essex Cricket, added: “It is an excellent moment to be able to install two life-saving defibrillators here at The Cloud County Ground, and we are very grateful to the JE3 Foundation and the Boundary Club in their assistance in allowing us to do so.

“While we hope the defibrillators will never have to be used, their presence will still contribute to the peace of mind of every player, staff member, and visitor to our venue.”

Aron Nijjar loaned to Kent

Aron Nijjar has joined Kent on a three-match loan deal until the end of the 2023 season.

Nijjar, 28, will be eligible for selection in home matches against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire, either side of a trip to Somerset.

The Spitfires currently occupy ninth spot in Division One of the LV= Insurance County Championship, six points from safety.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Nijjar has taken 19 wickets and hit 239 runs in 14 first-class appearances, alongside returning 62 wickets across 64 white-ball games.

Match Preview: Sussex Women v Essex Women

SUSSEX WOMEN V ESSEX

WOMEN’S LONDON CHAMPIONSHIP
BRIGHTON ALDRIDGE COMMUNITY ACADEMY GROUND
SATURDAY 09 SEPTEMBER | 11AM START

Essex Women face their final London Championship fixture of 2023 as they travel to the south coast to take on Sussex in a meeting of the two remaining unbeaten sides in this year’s competition.

The Eagles have already seen off Surrey, Kent, and in their last match, which was played at The Cloud County Ground, Middlesex, to currently sit atop the five-team table.

With the Spitfires and the Brown Caps both having completed their respective campaigns, it is only one of the sides which will meet on Saturday who retain a chance of winning the competition.

Aldridge Community Academy in Falmer, in the shadow of Premier League football club Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium, will host the clash.

THE OPPOSITION

Sussex’s season in this competition has been a little disjointed, with the Sharks only able to play two of their four fixtures so far and still having a tie with Middlesex outstanding.

However, they have come out on top in those two matches, seeing off Kent by 35 runs in Maidstone at the beginning of July and then earning a 59-run win over Surrey in Brighton a week and a half ago.

They have been similarly dominant in their other two competitions this season, finishing joint-top in the South Central Regional Cup, and winning at Finals Day for Group 5 of the Women’s County T20.

The former competition is a six-team single group, in which the Sharks finished level with Hampshire not just on points but also on net run-rate.

Meanwhile, the Sharks won on Finals Day for Group 5 of the Women’s County T20 at the County Ground in Hove, again versus Hampshire by 25 runs, having secured a 64-run thrashing of Berkshire in the last four.

LAST TIME OUT

Jess Bird crunched an unbeaten 88 as Essex completed a comfortable seven-wicket victory against Middlesex in the Women’s London Championship at The Cloud County Ground last month.

Middx result

Bird’s knock held together the Eagles’ chase and was ably supported by 49 from captain Kelly Castle alongside Scarlett Hughes’ 22 not out, with the latter striking the winning runs.

It was a chase that the Eagles barely ever failed to look in control of throughout, and it had been teed up by a tight bowling performance led by Castle, Grace Poole, and Tilly Callaghan, who all claimed two wickets apiece.

WOMEN’S LONDON CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

LAST TIME WE MET

It was a nail-biting finish on the last occasion that these sides met in the 50-over format, in last season’s London Championship, as the Sharks sneaked over the line to defeat Essex by one wicket.

Jasmine Westley top-scored from number nine with an unbeaten 33, and Tilly Callaghan contributed 26, but Chiara Green’s 4/21 saw the Eagles bowled out for 160.

In response, Hollie Dring-Richardson claimed 5/30 from eight overs, but a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 79 between captain Green and Emily Spooner saw Sussex fight back from 67-4.

Hopes were raised again when Dring-Richardson took two in three balls to leave Sussex 157-9, but they were finally dashed once and for all in the next over when Beth Harvey struck four to seal the narrowest of wins.

TICKETS

Entry to this fixture will be free of charge, with no need to reserve any tickets in advance.

While this is the final game of 2023 for Essex, there is one more chance to watch women’s cricket in Chelmsford before the winter as Sunrisers welcome Central Sparks to The Cloud County Ground the following day, Sunday 10 September.

Tickets for that match are still available, free for Essex, Middlesex, and Northamptonshire Members and priced at just £10 for non-member adults and £5 for Under-18s, and can be purchased by clicking the link below:

Match Report:

Hugely impressive batting performances from Robin Das, Ali Zeb and Feroze Khushi paved the way for Essex’s crushing innings and 174-run v Second XI Championship victory over old adversaries Kent at Billericay Cricket Club.

Das claimed a starring role by scoring 214 off 215 balls during an incredible 309-minute stint at the crease. The 21-year-old right-handed batter hit no less than twenty-seven 4s and four 6s as Essex responded to Kent’s first innings total of 249.

At just 16, Zeb also caught the eye and batted with maturity beyond his years with 114 from 143, while Khushi again provided a glimpse of his undoubted talent with 75 with Essex racking up a huge 596 for eight before the declaration came.

Earlier, skipper Jack Leaning had top-scored for the visitors with 101. Aaron Beard (15-5-37-3) and Zak Evans (13.2-2-62-3) did much of the damage for Essex with the ball.

The chase was always going to be way beyond the visitors, although Tawanda Muyeye provided a plucky 60 from 47. However, Aron Nijjar led the way with six for 30 from 13.5 overs, while Beard took his match figures to five for 76 to ensure a comfortable success for the hosts with some to spare.
