County Championship So Far: Part 1

April

Essex kicked off their season with a short trip to Lord’s to face newly-promoted Middlesex, and if McGrath was looking for an early marker to be laid down, his side delivered one in professional fashion.

MiddxCCC_EssexCCC_070423_TGS47444

Dan Lawrence made light of the early-season conditions to hit 105 in the Eagles’ first innings as Matt Critchley also chipped in with 55, before Jamie Porter returned 6/35, his best figures in five years, to skittle the hosts.

Possessing a lead of 96, Essex then put themselves virtually out of sight thanks to a further 53 from Critchley, and once Porter and Sam Cook had shared six wickets between them, a season-opening victory was in the bag.

Next up was a home tie against Lancashire, with the game dripping in narratives even before it had begun as England’s all-time top Test wicket-taker Jimmy Anderson lined up against run-scoring counterpart Alastair Cook.

With both sides possessing star power, the game was even at halfway, as Sam Cook picked up 5/42 to outshine Anderson’s 4/70, with Critchley’s 78 helping to edge Essex into a small first-innings lead.

In their rain-affected second dig, the Red Rose did pull off the rare feat of putting Essex up against it at Chelmsford, despite the toil of Porter, Simon Harmer, and Doug Bracewell, who split six wickets between them.

The Eagles fought to the end, though, refusing to allow the visitors to drive home their advantage by batting out the 59 overs that remained on the final day, ensuring a stalemate.

Lancashire result

Essex’s final assignment in April took them over the Dartford Crossing and to Canterbury, where rivals Kent lay in wait for the season’s first Battle of the Bridge, though persistent rain meant each side could only bat once.

Kent_CCC_vs_Essex_CCC_22_04_23___02414

Nick Browne and Tom Westley did take advantage of the time in the middle that was permitted, racking up 159 and 148, respectively, in a stand of 265 for the second wicket, while Michael Pepper also posted a run-a-ball 52.

Harmer then kept Kent reasonably honest with a haul of 4/141 in the face of 170 from England opener Zak Crawley, though with the final day completely washed out, a draw was inevitable.

Despite the disappointment in Kent of being unable to force a result after putting up maximum batting points, the Eagles still concluded April unbeaten.

Skipper Westley led the way in the run-scoring department, with Critchley and Browne close behind, while Porter confirmed his fine month by topping the wicket-taking charts ahead of Harmer and new-ball partner Cook.

Match Report:

A third-wicket partnership of 136 between Hamza Khan and Omaris Khan helped Warwickshire to victory over Essex in the final of the ECB U14 County Cup.

The former Khan made 72 in 91 balls with ten fours, and was only bettered within his side by the latter, who hit an unbeaten 86 off 105 as the young Bears chased down Essex’s 202 all out in 42.2 overs.

Opener Shahariyar Chaudhry top-scored for the young Eagles after they won the toss, hitting 39, but despite Xander Silverwood and Aayush Baluja also passing 30, the Warks attack succeeded in taking ten wickets.

Jack Pidgeon led the way, returning figures of 3/37, while Charlie Taylor and Edward Miller evenly split four more scalps between them.

It was only a ninth-wicket stand of 54 between Silverwood, whose 37 came in just 27 deliveries, and Aditya Singh, who made 20, that helped Essex pass 200.

In reply, Singh took two wickets to be the pick of the young Eagles’ attack, with Navine Sureshan and Prajen Kavinkumar picking up one apiece.

However, it was the efforts of the two Khans, which included Omaris hitting the winning four, that guided Warks to victory.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED: THE ABILITY TEAM’S MINI BUS NAME REVEALED

Earlier this year,  Essex Ford (part of the Allen Motor Group) kindly provided a Ford Tourneo Custom minibus for Essex County Cricket Club’s Ability Team to get them and their kit to away matches in style with maximum comfort and ease.

We are delighted to share that the Ability Team minibus has now been given a name by the Ability players.

As well as supporting the Essex Men’s First XI success for over 17 years, Essex Ford are extremely proud of Essex Cricket’s work to create excellent, inclusive playing opportunities and pathways for those with special needs and disabilities. Their dedication to ability cricket helps young people living with a disability gain the confidence and skills to be independent.

To make the new minibus feel part of the team, we asked the Ability players to come up with creative name ideas to share with Group Marketing Director for Allen Motor Group, Matt Brown, Community Development Manager, Pat Ward and Aaron Beard, First XI player and Ability Team Ambassador.

After taking time to carefully deliberate, the trio decided on the name ‘The Eagle’, paving the way for the memorable catchphrase, ‘The Eagle Has Landed🦅’. Now the team can announce their matchday arrival in style!

Essex Ford will now begin the task of installing the new name sticker on to the minibus so that everyone can keep track of The Eagle on the move.

We would like to express our gratitude to Essex Ford once again for gifting the minibus to our Ability Team. Their kindness and devotion to our Ability players is outstanding and the Club look forward to developing our partnership further to achieve more together in the future.

Essex Women U18 qualify for National T20 Finals Day

Essex Under 18 Women have secured their place at Finals Day of the National T20 County tournament in Loughborough on Sunday 10 September.

The young Eagles, who reached this stage by virtue of having topped the nine-team Group 3, will face North East Warriors, who won Group 1, in their last-four tie.

The other semi-final will see Group 4 toppers Hampshire take on Worcestershire, who finished first in Group 2, with the action at the Brockington Oval, on the campus of Loughborough University, starting at 10:30am.

Essex won seven of their eight group-stage matches in finishing eight points clear of nearest challengers Berkshire, against whom a DLS-affected five-wicket loss was the only blemish on their record.

Three successful chases at the beginning of August, against Kent, Suffolk, and Middlesex, preceded that defeat, but it failed to take the wind out of the young Eagles’ wings as four consecutive victories followed.

The biggest wins of the bunch were the final two, with an 88-run success over Buckinghamshire following a 112-run hammering of Surrey in which the young Brown Caps were bowled out for just 37.

Sophia Mitchell claimed three wickets in that comprehensive win and was both Essex and the entire group’s leading light with the ball, taking 11 wickets at an average of 7.36 and with an average economy rate of 3.86.

Mitchell finished ahead of Jessica Pugh for the young Eagles, who claimed eight scalps, and Bella Johnson and Prisha Bedi, who picked up seven apiece.

Meanwhile, Bella Howarth was the most productive with the bat for Essex, with her 246 runs at an average of 49.20 and a strike rate of 110.81 putting her second in the overall charts, behind only Suffolk’s Sophie Singer.

Johnson demonstrated her all-rounder abilities by hitting 116 runs to finish second to Howarth, while Hollie Dring-Richardson’s total of 110 put her in third.

Harry Boparai had played an instrumental role in restricting the total Woodford Wells would require, as he took 4/19 from three overs, alongside Kazeem Ul Hassan, who claimed 3/29 from four.

Callum Greene top scored for Orsett & Thurrock with 44 off 35 and was then responsible for one of the wickets to fall in the chase, but the efforts of Rashid and Douris meant Woodford Wells secured a win in just 14 overs.

Wanstead & Snaresbrook opening bowler Monty Cooper was named Player of the Match in returning figures of 2/5 as his side defeated Woodford Wells to win the Ravi Bopara T20 Cup.

Cooper’s spell, which also included a run-out off his bowling, left Woodford Wells at 27-3 and eventually restricted them to 112-9, which was a target that Wanstead & Snaresbrook easily overhauled inside 15 overs.

Captain Ben Munson led from the front with 34 and wicketkeeper Charlie Britt contributed 28, but Cooper, alongside Phil Thoufick’s 3/24 and 2/20 from Haaris Usman, kept the target comfortably achievable.

Having been inserted, Brentwood set 121-7 as Carpenter top-scored with 33 and opener Ellis made 31, before restricting Witham to 107-6 in reply.

Jacob Wagner also contributed with 22, and despite two wickets apiece for Oscar Burley and Freddie Caplan, the total would prove to be enough to see Brentwood through.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.15

Witham began strongly as Burley and captain Harrison McDonald both hit 20, putting on 44 for the first wicket, but the bowling returns of Hari Patel and Abdullah Hafeez, who took combined figures of 4/37, strangled them.

Harrison Kiddier struck an unbeaten 11 off just four balls at the end of the innings, but Witham ended just short of their target as Carpenter backed up his earlier batting exploits by bowling the final over to see out the game.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.15

Tarun Sharma bowled a miserly four overs, returning figures of 2/14, and Cyrus Malik also picked up 2/24, but Wanstead & Snaresbrook were unable to overhaul their target in reply.

Owen Humphrey top-scored with 26, while Ayan Safdar and Victor Tremewen also passed 20, but the Ilford attack bowled tightly to ensure the required rate crept away, eventually sealing victory with the final ball of the innings.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.12

Earlier, Zachary Ellis had also made an unbeaten 50 for Brentwood, underpinning their total, and Jack Carpenter contributed a 21-ball 32, though consistently economical Ilford bowling restricted their scoring opportunities.

Jacob Wagner did pick up a wicket in his first over when Ilford came to chase, but Shah and Khan’s stand carried their side to victory, as the latter sealed silverware with back to back fours.

As well as lifting the trophy, Ilford will also receive further recognition next summer as they go forward to represent Essex in the ECB U15 National Club T20 in 2024.

Vote for your DeVines Player of the Month for August

White-ball cricket returned to Chelmsford in August as the Eagles began their One Day Cup campaign.

The month of August was a tough one for the Eagles, which saw the Metro Bank One Day Cup start and conclude with Essex playing 8 matches, winning just the solitary game against Middlesex. However, there was positives to take from the competition with it providing some of the younger players will some valuable experience in the First XI and out in the middle at The Cloud County Ground.

Your player of the month for August is Charlie Allison! Allison played a key role in the Essex victory over Middlesex, running out Ethan Bamber with a powerful throw from the third-man boundary.

The contenders for August were:

Charlie Allison

Charlie Allison followed in the footsteps of his brother Ben this season, making his first professional appearance for the Essex side as they embarked on their One Day Cup campaign. Allison has played a vital role in our win against Middlesex this month as he struck a maiden half-century in only his third first-team innings to help Essex pull off an extraordinary first victory of the season in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Aaron Beard

Aaron Beard impressed the crowd against Notts Outlaws as he tore a hole in Notts batting line-up with career-best List A figures of four for 32 as the Outlaws, put in, lost their last nine wickets for 66 runs. Beard triumphed with a three-wicket burst in just nine balls which marked the start of a plethora of wickets as Notts collapsed in just 14 overs from a promising 171-1 to 237 all out with 25 balls unused. He later wrapped things up, taking his fourth wicket by bowling Brett Hutton.

Noah Thain

At 19-years-old, Noah Thain added to his one previous game for the Eagles (a First-Class tourist match against Ireland in May) by playing 6 matches. After a tough start, scoring just 10 runs in his first 3 games, Noah found form away at Leicestershire where he 75* (71) during a partnership of 105 alongside Charlie Allison, which took Essex to within reach of a winning score before falling narrowly short.

Continuing his form in the final match at home to Surrey, Thain carried his average to a respectable 39.75, the third highest in the the squad, after hitting 63 (84) as Essex just lost again.

Beau Webster

When Essex faced Hampshire, Australian Beau Webster and South African Simon Harmer saved Essex from 53 for four – shaped by Keith Barker’s three for 25 – to reach 236.  Webster also enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Luc Benkenstein as the pair put on 50 in six overs with Beau Webster, both of them hammering two sixes each as Essex continued to score at around eight an over.
