PEPS INTERVIEW
Match Report:

Dom Bess and Matt Revis produced career-best List A bowling figures to spark an Essex batting collapse and set up Yorkshire Vikings’ first Metro Bank One-Day Cup win of the season.

Bess claimed 5-37 as Essex subsided from 103-0 – underpinned by Michael Pepper’s swashbuckling personal-best 63 from 34 balls – to 221 all out in 36 overs. Revis had earlier sliced through the Essex upper order with 4-54.

The Vikings reached their target with 25 balls remaining, barely breaking sweat and only five wickets down. Shan Masood, their Pakistan white-ball captain, led the way with a patient 54 from 66 balls, with James Wharton seeing them over the line with an unbeaten 54 from 49 balls.

Yorkshire had seen two of their previous three games in the competition abandoned without a ball bowled, and the other lost to Kent by just two runs under DLS. But they bounced back on the same wicket that Essex had won a thriller under the Chelmsford floodlights against Middlesex on Friday.

Pepper’s whirlwind innings encompassed the entire powerplay before he fell to the last ball of the 10th over, skying Bess to cover. The wicket had come at a cost to Yorkshire, though, as Pepper had just gone through his repertoire off the previous three balls, sweeping, lofting over midwicket and reverse-sweeping for boundaries.

In all, Pepper scored 58 of his 63 runs in boundaries, three of them clearing the ropes without bouncing, two of them in an over from Ben Coad that went for 22 as Essex rattled up three figures inside 10 overs.

Das contributed 32 in the opening stand of 103 and tucked into Bess with three fours in a row during a run-a-ball 36.
Tom Westley maintained the tempo in a brisk 17 before he chased a wide delivery from Revis and was caught behind. Three balls later Das drove straight back to the bowler.

Luc Benkenstein put on 50 in six overs with Beau Webster, both of them hammering two sixes each as Essex continued to score at around eight an over. But that charge was stifled, starting when Revis claimed his third and fourth wickets in just six balls with Benkenstein clubbing to mid-on and Simon Harmer chipping to short midwicket.

Jack Shutt had Charlie Allison lbw sweeping before Bess took centre stage with the final four wickets, three of them falling in six balls as Essex left 14 overs unused, He had Webster caught behind attempting to cut, Jamal Richards patting back a return catch, Will Buttleman beaten by one that kept low and Aron Nijjar playing on.

In comparison, Yorkshire’s openers were more circumspect and had just 46 on the board at the end of the powerplay, less than half of Essex’s 10-over total. The pair were together for exactly an hour, having knocked off 80 from the target, before Bean was caught in two minds against Webster’s off-spin and the ball was past him before he jerked his bat down.

Fellow opener Duke reverse-swept Harmer for the first of four fours in his patient 42 before he was bowled attempting to scoop Nijjar. The spinner then had George Hill snaffled at short midwicket before Harmer dived full-length to his left to take a return catch and dismiss Will Fraine.

The Vikings had become becalmed in mid-innings without a boundary for almost 10 overs before Masood added to his earlier six over long leg with successive fours off Nijjar. He put on 68 in 11 overs with Wharton to take Yorkshire within 42 of victory but was strangled down the leg-side by Westley with Buttleman taking the catch.

Wharton took Yorkshire within sight of the target with two sixes in an over from Webster, the second over midwicket to reach his first white-ball fifty from 47 balls.

Match Preview: Essex v Yorkshire Vikings

Essex v Yorkshire Vikings

Metro Bank One Day Cup
The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford
Sunday 13 August, 11:00am

After Friday’s extraordinary comeback victory over Middlesex, Essex head into a second home game in three days with a spring in their step.

Friday was a story of youth combining with experience after a blistering innings from Charlie Allison wass backed up by an excellent comeback with the ball from the bowlers, Beau Webster and Tom Westley holding their nerve at the death.

Squad:

Jamie Porter has picked up a groin niggle and is left out of an otherwise unchanged squad.

v yorks swuad odc

The Opposition:

Yorkshire squad: Shan Masood (c), Finlay Bean, Dom Bess, Ben Coad, Harry Duke, Will Fraine, George Hill, Dom Leech, Will Luxton, Ben Mike, Matthew Revis, Jack Shutt, James Wharton.

Yorkshire are awaiting their first win in this season’s competition, though have been a little unluckier than the rest, even with the recent conditions, with two of their three matches washed out.

Even their sole completed match was rain affected, with the Vikings falling to a narrow two-run defeat to defending champions Kent in Scarborough via the DLS method.

They are also off the pace in the County Championship, with just one win this season in Division Two, and like Middlesex, saw their Vitality Blast campaign end in the group stage.

Key Battle: Charlie Allison v Ben Coad

KEY BATTLE copy

Last Time We Met:

Appropriately for how their campaign has panned out this season, the last time Yorkshire visited the Cloud County Ground, in last season’s competition, saw rain interrupt play.

That did not, however, prevent Essex securing an 88-run win via the DLS method, as the Eagles’ total of 240, underpinned by 90 from Grant Roelofsen and Tom Westley’s 52, turned out to be more than enough.

The weather Yorkshire’s innings after only 19 overs, but Shane Snater’s 3/29 already had the White Rose reeling on 76-6, far short of the DLS par score they would have needed and thus handing Essex victory.

Match Reaction: Charlie Allison

Match Highlights:

Match Report:

Charlie Allison struck a maiden half-century in only his third first-team innings to help Essex pull off an extraordinary first victory of the season in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The 18-year-old younger brother of seamer Ben lived up to his promise in the second eleven with a mature knock of 70 that included three sixes and even outshone his captain Tom Westley’s patient 60 from 90 balls.

However, Middlesex looked well on track to record their own first win of the campaign when they reached 236-3 with 15 overs left chasing 299 to win.

But despite Mark Stoneman setting the foundations for their reply with a dozen fours and two sixes in a 97-ball 93, Middlesex collapsed to lose by three runs with seven balls left to the delight of a large Chelmsford crowd.

And it was Allison whose throw from the third-man boundary ran out Ethan Bamber as the final Middlesex pair tried to steal the runs to decide the match.

Middlesex had one hundred on the board inside the 15 overs of their reply with Stoneman reaching his fifty from just 39 balls. It included two sixes, one scooped off Aaron Beard and another pulled off Jamie Porter. He might have perished there and then had Michael Pepper’s throw been more accurate into the wicketkeeper’s gloves.

He capitalised on the reprieve with an extravagant reverse-sweep for four off Simon Harmer. Joe Cracknell had been slightly overshadowed in the stand of 124, though he took two successive boundaries off Harmer before he was brilliantly caught in the covers by Robin Das for 48.

The wicket had no significant impact on Middlesex’s progress and they were halfway to their target in 22 overs, though Sam Robson was dropped on 20 at backward point by Das.

Essex thought they had Robson soon after for a catch behind off Beau Webster that left umpire Paul Nicholls unmoved and the bowler showing his frustration by slamming the ball to the ground. Robson was finally removed for 26, driving at Aaron Beard and being bowled.

Stoneman’s stay of eight minutes shy of two hours was ended when he swung Beard to Porter on the deep fine-leg boundary.

At that point Middlesex threatened to implode with three wickets going down in 14 balls. Jack Davies was bamboozled by one from Harmer before Ryan Higgins dragged on from Webster and Luke Hollman was run out without facing a ball. It got worse when Josh de Caires was bowled by Porter to leave Middlesex still 42 runs short with 10 overs remaining.

Martin Andersson had helped Simpson take them within nine runs of victory when he was bowled by Webster. He was followed, two runs later, by Simpson, bowled by Westley. And then came the unlikely denouement.

On a pitch that took spin early on, Josh de Caires’s three wickets in eight balls halted an Essex onslaught led by Pepper, who took a liking to Middlesex debutant Isaan Kaushal, hitting him for four fours and a six over extra cover before the 21-year-old seamer was withdrawn from the attack . However, when Kaushal returned late on he claimed his maiden first-team wicket when Will Buttleman picked out deep mid-on.

Pepper swept de Caires’s first ball for his sixth boundary but fell next ball for an 18-ball 31 to a stupendous running catch over his shoulder at deep long leg by Martin Andersson. Das then pulled de Caires invitingly to deep square leg, and two balls later Webster advanced too far and turned in dismay to see John Simpson removing the bails.

Luc Benkenstein helped steady the ship in a 55-run partnership with Westley. But after lofting de Caires for six over long leg, he took a wild swipe at Luke Hollman, who then had Harmer playing all round one to be lbw.

Westley’s innings had few thrills, though he carved Robson through extra cover for his sixth boundary the ball before he was beaten by one that turned from outside off and took middle stump.

Allison had played calmly alongside Westley but cut loose once his captain had departed. He reached his fifty from 59 balls with a six to long-off in a Robson over that also went for a maximum over long-leg by Buttleman. Allison’s 65-ball innings ended when he played over a ball from Bamber.

Metro Bank One Day Cup
The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford
Friday 11 August, 2:00pm | Sunday 13 August, 11:00am

Following a clash away to Hampshire on Tuesday, Essex return home for two matches in three days as they look to record a first win of this season’s One Day Cup.

Beau Webster and Simon Harmer put on a partnership of 121 for the fifth wicket in Southampton, which included the latter’s maiden List A fifty, but the Eagles found their total of 236 overhauled by the hosts.

Tom Westley’s side will hope a pair of home fixtures over the weekend can provide the perfect catalyst to kick-start a winning run as the group stage ticks towards its halfway point.

Middlesex have only had one opportunity to actually play a match in this season’s One Day Cup after seeing their scheduled clash with London rivals Surrey washed out on Saturday.

Having also lost that match in which play was possible, away to Hampshire last week, they are currently seventh in Group A of the competition.

Elsewhere, the Seaxes are battling to avoid relegation in the LV= County Championship, sitting eighth and just three points above the Division One drop zone, while their Vitality Blast campaign ended in the group stage.

Despite debutant Jack Davies’ 70, Middlesex fell to 212 all out, and it was a target that the hosts cantered to, as Alastair Cook top scored with 92 and shared an unbroken stand of 159 with Tom Westley, who made 87.

Young Eagles qualify for National County Cup semi-finals

Essex Under-18s have secured an ECB National County Cup semi-final against Somerset at Billericay Cricket Club on Sunday 20 August.

The young Eagles defeated Middlesex in the last eight at The Cloud County Ground last week by 173 runs, having comfortably defended a total of 289 by bowling the visitors out for 116 inside 26 overs.

Luc Benkenstein blitzed a 14-ball 34 at the top of the order to set the tone, before Charlie Allison top-scored with 90, and Ayaan Malik and Noah Thain both chipped in with 32 and 30, respectively.

Sam Bear then claimed 4/26 from seven overs while Thain and Charlie Bennett shared four more evenly between them as the young Seaxes fell considerably short of chasing down their target.

Somerset overcame Devon, the last non-first-class county left in the tournament, by three wickets as 60 from Thomas Rew, younger brother of Wyverns first-team regular James, helped them chase down a target of 221.

Durham are already in the other semi-final after defeating Derbyshire by 53 runs, with their opponents to be decided by the one remaining quarter-final between Warwickshire and Northamptonshire on 13th August.
