Vote for your DeVines Player of the Month for July

With 37% of the vote, Paul Walter is your DeVines Player of the Month for July. He had a fantastic month, playing an integral role in the Vitality Blast T20 campaign, taking 3 wickets in the final against Somerset. He also played a key role on Day Four as Essex faced Lancashire in Blackpool, taking 5 wickets in 13 overs.

July saw the Eagles secure a place in the quarter-finals after a nail-biting performance against Surrey at the start of July concluded the group stage of the T20 campaign. Essex faced Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston in a match that came down to the wire with Essex requiring 3 from 2 balls. Shane Snater socked the first ball for a straight six, soaring the Eagles to Finals Day on Saturday 15 July. After a successful win against Hampshire Hawks to start off the day, Essex went head-to-head with Somerset in an epic battle that unfortunately did not end as the Eagles hoped with Somerset winning by 14 runs.

After our Finals Day journey came to an end, the team’s focus returned to red-ball cricket as Essex faced Kent on their home turf here at The Cloud County Ground.

Simon Harmer

The T20 captain, Simon Harmer, started the month by guiding the Eagle’s to their second Vitality Blast Final, hitting the final ball of the Semi-Final into the stands for six before falling just short in the Final.

He followed this up in the County Championship against Kent starring with both bat and ball scoring 83* (91) as well as bowling an incredible 65 overs against Kent, rewarded with figures of 5-145.

Bowling Figures:

121.3 Overs, 36 Maidens, 12 Wicket @ 27.5

Batting Figures:

8 Innings, 164 Runs @ 32.8

Dan Lawrence

Dan Lawrence shone towards the back end of the Vitality Blast at the start of July. This included two marquee innings in the final Group Stage game against Surrey and in the Quarter-Final against Warwickshire, sharing a record second-wicket partnership in the former with Michael Pepper on his way to a half-century.

The Englishmen also brought up three-figures for the third time this season against Lancashire as he hit 135 (125) in an important second innings to set up the win at Blackpool.

Bowling Figures:

7 Overs, 2 Maidens, 1 Wicket @ 33

Batting Figures:

8 Innings, 323 Runs @ 40.4

Jamie Porter

Jamie Porter has been in fine form since the continuation of the County Championship after the Vitality Blast. The main highlight being a pair of 5-wicket hauls in both innings of the win at The Ageas Bowl.

Porter passed 10 wickets in the match for the third in his career and the first time since facing Worcestershire at The Cloud County Ground in 2018.

Bowling Figures:

81 Overs, 18 Maidens, 15 Wickets @ 16.4

Paul Walter

The allrounder started the month playing a vital role in the T20 campaign, where he would take a wicket in every match, including 3 in the Final, as well as providing valuable runs in the low-scoring Final.

At Blackpool, with Essex batting first, Paul Walter formed a match defining partnership of 155 with Dan Lawrence, scoring 76 (119) of them. The left-armer also played a decisive enforcer role with the ball taking 5 wickets in his 13 overs as Essex won late on Day 4.

Bowling Figures:

40.1 Overs, 4 Maidens, 14 Wickets @ 11.8

Batting Figures:

10 Innings, 236 Runs @ 26.2

Myles Churchill appointed Chair of Essex Cricket Foundation

Essex Cricket Foundation is pleased to confirm the appointment of Myles Churchill as its new Chair.

Myles, who brings with him almost three decades of professional experience in investment management, will take over from Keith Brown, who has served in the role since the Foundation was formed in 2015.

He will lead a board of trustees comprising Essex Chief Executive John Stephenson, legendary former player Graham Gooch, John Barnes, Bob McLintock, Julia Healey, Richard Hunt, John Spence, and Janet Hargreaves.

“I’d like to warmly thank Keith Brown for his excellent work in developing the Essex Cricket Foundation from its formation over the past eight years, and I’m looking forward to continuing what he started,” said Myles.

“I’ve always had an interest in cricket, and my main motivation for taking this role is about wanting to give something back to the game on a county level.”

Away from work, Myles lives on the Essex-Suffolk border with his wife and three children, and their two Labradors, and has been involved as a player and as Treasurer at Mistley Cricket Club near Manningtree.

He continued: “It’s good to try and expand what I’ve done at grassroots, and I want to continue supporting the entities that the Foundation currently does while also bringing fresh ideas and expanding on what we do now.

“We’re heavily into ability cricket as it is, but something else we’re going to look at, especially following recent reports, is inclusion and diversity, and how we use cricket as a tool to promote community cohesion and health.

“I also see much of the discussion around how money in cricket can be best utilised, so I’ll be trying to transfer my professional skills into what is needed to make the Foundation successful moving forward.”

Match Preview: Essex Women v Middlesex

ESSEX WOMEN V MIDDLESEX
WOMEN’S LONDON CHAMPIONSHIP
THE CLOUD COUNTY GROUND, CHELMSFORD
FRIDAY 4 AUGUST | 11AM START

Essex Women play their final match of the 2023 season on Friday, as they welcome Middlesex to The Cloud County Ground for a 50-over London Championship fixture.

Kelly Castle’s charges will hope to finish their season on a high, and with the potential for a minimum ten points on offer for a win, victory could propel them ahead of Kent in the competition table.

The Eagles’ last outing against Middlesex resulted in a big win, and hopes will be high once more that proceedings will follow the form book as Essex target the summit of the table.

THE OPPOSITION

Middlesex are suffering something of a tough season in the London Championship so far, having been defeated in both of their matches to sit bottom of the five-team table.

They were convincingly beaten by Kent in their last outing in mid-July, losing by ten wickets after being bowled out for 95.

The Seaxes were also seen off by a large margin against city rivals Surrey at the end of May, being dismissed for 106 to lose by 161 runs.

However, the Women’s County T20 brought them a little more joy, as they picked up five wins from six and progressed to the Group 6 final against Kent, though a washout meant they shared the trophy.

LAST TIME WE MET

The Eagles secured a crushing win last time they encountered Middlesex, winning by eight wickets in last season’s London Championship at North Middlesex Cricket Club.

In the shadow of Alexandra Palace last August, Essex won the toss and opted to insert the hosts, with Tilly Callaghan claiming 5-18 and Hollie Dring-Richardson taking 3-8 as the Seaxes were bowled out for 77.

In reply, Jess Bird hit an unbeaten 33 and captain Kelly Castle contributed 22 as the target was overhauled comfortably inside only 19 overs.

This fixture is free entry for all, and seating will be unreserved.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Thain recently signed a rookie contract covering the 2023 season, and has made both his First-Class and List A debuts for the Eagles this season.

Match Preview: Essex v Notts Outlaws

ESSEX V NOTTS OUTLAWS
METRO BANK ONE DAY CUP
THE CLOUD COUNTY GROUND, CHELMSFORD
THURSDAY 3 AUGUST | 11AM START

Following a damp first outing in this season’s One Day Cup for Essex, the visit of Notts Outlaws to Chelmsford on Thursday provides another opportunity to kick-start the 50-over campaign in earnest.

Only 42 overs in total were possible against Lancashire in Sedbergh, as rain first delayed the start and reduced the encounter to 36 overs per side, before returning to curtail proceedings in the early stages of Essex’s chase.

Having taken a point from that match, the upcoming clash with Notts will now present a first chance for several of this season’s crop of Eagles to play in front of a Chelmsford crowd.

Charlie Allison, Noah Thain, and Beau Webster all made their List A debuts for Essex on Tuesday, with the latter in particular impressing in a three-wicket return before the rain restarted.

Squad

Squad Notts
Head Coach Anthony McGrath has named a 13-man squad for this fixture, with the sole change from Tuesday’s match being that Mackenzie Jones is left out.

Simon Harmer continues a scheduled rest from cricket but is still expected to return to play a part later in the group stage.

The Opposition

Notts Outlaws squad: Haseeb Hameed (c), Calvin Harrison, Brett Hutton, Lyndon James, Sammy King, Tom Loten, Ben Martindale, Matthew Montgomery, Dane Patterson, Liam Patterson-White, Toby Pettman, Dane Schadendorf, Fateh Singh, Ben Slater

The only meeting this summer between the sides was back in May, when Trent Bridge played host to a draw in the LV= County Championship in a match that saw both Alastair Cook and Tom Westley register twin fifties.

Since then, Essex have had the upper hand in the four-day game, currently second in Division One and 52 points ahead of the sixth-placed Green and Golds.

Meanwhile, both sides reached the Vitality Blast knockout stages, though it was only Essex who progressed to Finals Day, as the Outlaws, having finished fourth in the North Group, were defeated at Somerset in the last eight.

KEY BATTLE

Last Time We Met

Though the most recent meeting between Essex and Notts was in that aforementioned four-day contest at Trent Bridge earlier this year, the last time there was any contact in the 50-over format was back in 2017.

That was in that year’s semi-finals, and a run-drenched affair unfolded as Essex set the visitors 371 to win as Alastair Cook and Ryan ten Doeschate hit centuries, with the latter’s effort coming in just 66 deliveries.

However, in reply, the Outlaws made use of what was still a belting pitch to chase the target down with three balls to spare thanks to tons from Samit Patel and Steven Mullaney and despite three wickets for Jamie Porter.

Nottinghamshire v Essex - Clydesdale Bank 40
The last time Essex prevailed over Notts in List A cricket was in 2011, when a similarly sparkling run-chase at Chelmsford, this time from the hosts, saw a target of 288 overhauled with an over to spare.

Two wickets apiece for Ravi Bopara and Lonwabo Tsotsobe kept the target within reach, and Cook then again shone with 96, which, alongside fifties for James Foster and Bopara, sealed a comfortable seven-wicket win.

Match Report:

Lancashire and Essex had to settle for one point apiece from their opening Metro Bank One-Day Cup game after the rain brought an early end to their 36-over match at Sedbergh School.

A wet outfield prevented play beginning until one o’clock, but Lancashire’s batsmen prospered against an inexperienced visiting attack, making 270 for seven off their allotted overs. Dane Vilas made 65, his best score of the season in first-team cricket, and Essex were 23 for two when drizzle forced the players off the field. The game was finally called off at 5.40.

The early end was tough on Lancashire, whose openers, Keaton Jennings and George Bell made a bright start, putting on 25 inside four overs. But having taken three successive fours off Aaron Beard, Jennings nicked the same bowler to slip, where Essex’s Australian
debutant, Beau Webster, took the catch to remove the Lancashire captain for 19.

Josh Bohannon and Bell then added 72 at a healthy clip in 13 overs before both were dismissed in the space of six balls. First Bohannon, having made 35 off 42 balls was caught at backward point by Robin Das when cutting Aron Nijjar’s slow left-arm and in the next over, Bell was plumb lbw to Webster for 29.

But those reverses only sparked further Lancastrian acceleration as Dane Vilas and George Balderson put on 70 in 9.1 overs, a partnership that was only ended when Aaaron Beard deflected a fierce drive from Vilas into the bowler’s end stumps to run out Balderson for 32.

Nothing, however, could prevent the home side towards the end of their innings. Vilas reached his fifty before being caught at deep midwicket by Ben Allison off Webster for 65 and both the debutants, Matthew Hurst and Tom Aspinwall, acquitted themselves well.

Hurst ended the innings unbeaten on 21 and Sedbergh old boy Aspinwall included three colossal sixes in his ten-ball 22 as Lancashire finished with a formidable total on the board.

Webster was the most successful Essex bowler with three for 59 from seven overs and Nijjar took two for 35 from five. Jamie Porter, who opened the bowling, operated from the Powell End without a break and took nought for 26.

Essex’s pursuit of 271 for victory when they lost both openers inside the first five overs. Josh Rymell was well caught at long leg by a diving Balderson off Jack Blatherwick for six and Robin Das fell to a comparably fine catch by Aspinwall inches inside the midwicket boundary off Will Williams for eight.

At that point, though, fine drizzle began and only got heavier. The umpires’ decision to call the game off was inevitable.

LANCASHIRE V ESSEX
METRO BANK ONE DAY CUP
SEDBERGH SCHOOL, SEDBERGH
TUESDAY 1 AUGUST | 11AM START

Attention fully turns to the Metro Bank One Day Cup for the duration of August, and Essex start their campaign with a long trip north to face Lancashire in Sedbergh.

The Eagles go into the competition hunting for their first knockout stage appearance in two years, but with a squad containing a balanced blend of youth and experience, hopes are high they can achieve their aim.

Squad

Lancs squad

A 14-player squad has been named for the tournament opener, with the 12-strong group that took on Bedfordshire supplemented by the addition of captain Tom Westley and new overseas arrival Beau Webster.

Should he be selected in the final XI, 29-year-old Australian Webster will make his debut in county cricket, while rookie contract signatories Noah Thain, Charlie Allison, and Mackenzie Jones all retain their places.

Simon Harmer is rested for the start of the group stage, and Alastair Cook will be unavailable for selection for the entirety of the competition.

The Opposition

Lancashire squad: Keaton Jennings (c), Tom Aspinwall, George Balderson, George Bell, Jack Blatherwick, Josh Bohannon, Josh Boyden, Matthew Hurst, George Lavelle, Jack Morley, Harry Singh, Dane Vilas, Will Williams.

Lancashire, who are seventh in Division One of the County Championship, and were eliminated in the T20 Blast quarter-finals, will be looking at the One-Day Cup as their only realistic chance of silverware left this summer.

The Red Rose finished as runners-up in this competition last time out, falling to Kent by 21 runs in the final, and that, coupled with their season so far, will doubtless provide plenty of motivation throughout August.

KEY BATTLE copy

Last Time We Met

This will be the second trip to one of the outgrounds utilised by Lancashire for the Eagles this season, after previously clashing with the Red Rose in Blackpool in the County Championship earlier in July.

In a titanic, nerve-shredding tussle of a match, Essex prevailed by 46 runs as Lancashire, needing 430 to win on the final day, went close through Rob Jones’ century.
However, with just ten balls of the four-day contest remaining, Jones nicked Doug Bracewell to Dan Lawrence at slip to send Essex up to second in Division One.

The last meeting in the 50-over arena between the sides that saw play – following the abandonment of last season’s scheduled clash in Sedbergh due to rain – was in 2021, and that too provided high drama.

The Eagles and the Red Rose could not be separated in a nail-biting tie, as both sides posted 250; Steven Croft’s 93 underpinned Lancashire’s target despite two wickets each for Ryan ten Doeschate and Aron Nijjar.

In response, Alastair Cook hit 110 but the bowling efforts of Croft and Luke Wells helped the hosts keep the scores dead level, handing both sides a point each.
