Essex legend Graham Gooch is currently taking on the Three Peaks Challenge, with current and former players meeting in Scotland this morning ahead of taking on the gruelling walk, which will see fundraisers climb three mountains in three days.

The physically demanding weekend will see 50 supporters summit Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in the space of three days over the course of this weekend (Friday 11 – Sunday 13 October). In total, that amounts to 26 miles walked and 3,407m climbed in three different countries.

Argentex, the foreign exchange specialists, have proudly partnered with the Three Peaks Challenge and it will not just be past and present cricketers who take to the mountains this weekend. Commercial partners, PCA staff, employees from the 18 first-class counties and supporters are set to give back to the game through the demanding trek.

All money raised will go towards two very worthy sporting charities in the form of the Professional Cricketers’ Trust and Tom Maynard Trust.

The Professional Cricketers’ Trust is professional cricket’s leading charity, which helps current and former players and their immediate families, when they have fallen on hard times. A number of beneficiaries have chosen to speak out about their experience of receiving support from the Trust, and you can find more information here.

Whilst the Cricketers’ Trust supports players during and after their playing days, the Tom Maynard Trust aims to educate young people in the emerging stages of their sporting career. The organisation aids the development of aspiring sportsmen and women by way of bursaries, provision of equipment and support for overseas placements, amongst other priorities, which include educating young sportspeople of the risks associated to top level sport.

PCA President and former England captain Graham Gooch, who previously supported the Cricketers’ Trust on his Coast 2 Coast walk in 2018, leads the names on taking on the challenge and is joined by four current England Women’s players.

In all, 23 PCA members will gather at the foot of Ben Nevis in the early hours of Friday morning and none more inspirational than Gloucestershire spinner Tom Smith who is taking on the challenge in memory of his late wife, Laura.

Earlier this summer, Smith explained his heart-breaking story and the support the Professional Cricketers’ Trust have provided his family. In a recent Instagram post, Smith said: “The Professional Cricketers’ Trust have supported us as a family by funding a nanny, helping with nursery fees and also providing physiological help to both me and Laura. The past 14 months have been incredibly tough since Laura died and I wouldn’t have been able to get through without this incredible charity’s support.”

One of the Directors of the Professional Cricketers’ Trust is PCA Chairman Daryl Mitchell who knows first-hand why this challenge is vitally important.

Mitchell said: “It is eye-opening to see the names of people who the Trust helps out. There’s a lot of guys who I’ve played against over the years as well as many who I’ve played with and have fallen on hard times. I see the amazing work the charity does first hand so it’s a huge and very rewarding part of the role of PCA Chairman to sit on the board of the Trust and see exactly where the money goes. It really does help some very worthwhile causes out there.

“It will be a tough challenge and I’m certainly not a mountain climber or a walker – I tend to do most of my work on flat cricket grounds. I completed Big Bike Ride 3 and the camaraderie of it all got me through so I’m looking forward to the togetherness of the group and spending three days with some really good people while raising crucial funds.”

Matt Maynard founded the Tom Maynard Trust after his son’s tragic passing in 2012 and is taking on his fourth joint challenge between the two charities and he said: “On Tom’s passing, we set up the Trust in his honour to try and help young sports people live their dream because that is what Tom was doing.

“It started out with helping young cricketers and it has since spread to education programmes in rugby union, golf, horse racing, netball and football. We concentrate on the start of someone’s career and obviously the Professional Cricketers’ Trust look after players throughout their entire lives.

“Both charities differ a lot in what they offer so it seems a really good fit.

“It will be a tough challenge, but it’s going to be fun and I think the bus journeys in particular could be absolutely brilliant. That’s what I’m looking forward to – a bit of camaraderie like we previously had on the bike rides.”

Ravi Bopara can’t really make up his mind if he’s excited about the Vitality Blast Finals Day or not. He probably is, but he has played in four before with Essex and not progressed beyond the semi-final stage, so is phlegmatic about this fifth attempt.

The Eagles play Derbyshire Falcons in the second semi-final (2.30pm) at Edgbaston this afternoon, and the veteran all-rounder, now 34, ponders the question of his level of expectation. “I think it is just me and Tendo [Ryan ten Doeschate], and [Adam] Wheater with Hampshire, who’ve been here before. So it’s exciting for everyone else, it being their first time.

“I am excited, don’t get me wrong, but it’s more the focus, the process of what I need to do. It’s not the occasion. I know I’m probably going to have 20 balls to face. What do I do with those 20 balls? What’s the situation going to be when I come in? I’m rehearsing it all in my mind.”

Bopara’s phenomenal hitting in four of the last five games – during which he hammered 215 runs for only twice out at a strike rate of more than 170 – was one of the major factors in Essex climbing from next to bottom in the south group to qualifying for the Blast’s big day. He launched three sixes off his last five balls to carry the Eagles over the line in the quarter-final against Lancashire Lightning.

In fact, of the 134 balls he has faced in the competition this season, 26 have gone to the boundary, many without hitting the ground first. “It’s been a real push towards being a bigger hitter of the ball this season,” he says, “a more aggressive hitter of the ball.

“Because the roles I’ve been playing around the world, including batting at five, six, sometimes at seven, there’s no space for building an innings. One thing you’ve got to accept down the order is you’re never going to be consistent. You’ve just got to be an impact player when you come in.

“I’ve worked really hard on my T20 game, it’s not something that’s just happened by luck. I’ve focused on T20 a lot. Even during four-day practice I’ve had a white-ball in my hand or I’ve batted against the white ball. I knew that at some stage at the back-end of the season it was going to become crucial.

“I think it helped going off and playing second-team cricket. I love playing T20 cricket and it gave me an opportunity to practise things that I’ve always wanted to practise. The problem you have playing as a professional cricketer is that every game you play has a consequence on it. You never really play games where you can practise your skills. But you can in second-team cricket and I was able to work on things that have helped me a lot.”

Bopara is one of the most experienced T20 cricketers around. He has played 329 games, scored 6,583 runs, taken 219 wickets and needs just seven more sixes to reach 200. It would be nice to pass that milestone today, he admits. “Yes, I fancy that,” he muses. “If I hit seven sixes we’d be doing all right …”

With a trip to Taunton on Monday in the Specsavers County Championship that will decide the title – Essex are 12 points in front – Bopara believes someone is smiling down on the county. “What with Hampshire pulling off that victory against Somerset the other day, and us coming back from the dead to reach Finals Day, it does seem like the momentum’s with us. It can either be a great week or an absolute shocking week. But whatever happens it doesn’t matter, no one’s going to remember it in a few years anyway!”

As far as Bopara’s own future is concerned, it looks like being in white-ball cricket rather than red. That future is bound up in T20, T10 and The Hundred and continuing to spend his winters on the sub-continent. “I love travelling, I love playing in new conditions, new players, new teams, it’s always exciting. Some of the stuff you learn from these guys, like Chris Gayle and Andre Russell, how they approach T20 cricket, it’s fascinating.”

RESULT: Essex have won by an innings and 40 runs in their penultimate fixture of the season putting themselves 12 points clear at the top of the County Championship table. The home side dominated onwards from day 2 as the Essex pace attack ripped through Surrey in the first innings before Dan Lawrence and Ryan Ten Doeschate established a sizeable lead for Harmer to play with as he probed through a talented Surrey lineup on day 3. Essex will have little time to enjoy the victory however as they are off to finals day on Saturday before the season finale at Taunton. What an exciting week next week could be for Essex cricket!

CLOSE OF PLAY: What a superb day that was for Essex, Porter and Sam Cook were let loose on the Surrey side in the morning session, bending back stumps throughout. Then after a steady start the Essex reply exploded into life, largely thanks to the work of Ryan Ten Doeschate and Dan Lawrence who both batted superbly throughout the afternoon. Lawrence eventually departed for a fantastic 147, getting caught in the slips, Tendo however remains and he along with the rest of the Essex batting order will hope to extend the home sides lead which already stands at 128 before the bowlers set about dismantling Surrey yet again.

STATE OF PLAY: After a frustrating day for both sides yesterday, Essex and Surrey will hope to turn the game into their direction this morning with the game firmly in the balance. Quick wickets for Essex or a strong partnership for Surrey could set the tone for one side to dominate the later proceedings in this end of season match.

DAY 2: With just over half an hour until play begins, the players are out on the field completing their preparations. The weather here in Chelmsford is a far cry from yesterday as warm sun beams down upon all those in and around the ground.

DAY 1 SUMMARY: After a morning of waiting play finally got underway at 2:15 with 55 overs of play scheduled for the day. Surrey having chosen to bat first lost 2 early wickets before Smith and Pope’s 50 run partnership put Surrey back in a decent position at tea. 2 quick wickets from Sam Cook after the break however swung momentum back in Essex’s favour before the game balanced out, Foakes and Jacks guiding Surrey to the close with a score of 137-4.

Alastair Cook will be signing copies of his book “The Autobiography” at The Cloudfm County Ground next week.

After the close of play on Day Two (Tuesday 17 September) of our Specsavers County Championship fixture against Surrey, you can head to The Doug Insole Pavilion and meet the former England Captain, who will be signing books from 6:15pm.

In the book, he recounts his rise from Essex schoolboy to England star, the fiery fall-out with Kevin Pietersen and the ruthless decisions a Captain must make. He expands on the highs of leading England to their first series win in India in 28 years, the glory of four Ashes wins and what, finally, convinced him to leave international cricket.

The Times described the book as “bracingly honest about the brutal nature of professional cricket” whilst The Guardian said it was “a fascinating and layered book which delves into the psychological challenges of the game… a timely read.”

Alastair will also be hosting a Q & A session so make sure you come prepared with some questions to test the former England man.

You can now vote for your DeVines Player of the Month for August with three contenders nominated for the award. August was a busy month for all despite three games being abandoned due to rain, as there were key fixtures in both the Vitality Blast and Specsavers County Championship to be played.

Sam Cook:

What a return Little Chef made from injury when the County Championship kicked back into action last month. In a crucial game at Canterbury, the seamer returned career-best match figures of 12-65 demonstrating great skill in a tight victory that saw Essex retain their spot at the top of the table.

Dan Lawrence:

3 half-centuries for the batsman in the Vitality Blast and a new contract made it a good month for Dan. His fluent knocks were instrumental in securing wins against Sussex and Gloucestershire whilst his score of 69 was crucial in helping the Eagles take a point away from Southampton.

Ravi Bopara:

Ravi flourished for the Eagles when we needed him most, and his performances with the bat helped secure the side a place at Finals Day for the first time since 2013. Against Surrey at The Kia Oval, he scored 70 from just 35 balls, which included 6 maximums. The following night at The Cloudfm County Ground, he put in another man of the match performance and scored 47 from just 27 balls and took 2 wickets to steer Simon Harmer’s side towards Finals Day.
