Match Preview: Essex v Yorkshire

Essex will be looking to notch a fifth home win of the Championship campaign and thus maintain a 100% record at The Cloudfm County Ground when they entertain Yorkshire starting on Sunday.

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath has named a 13-man squad with batsman Rishi Patel and pace bowler Matt Quinn added to the eleven that beat Nottinghamshire earlier this week at Trent Bridge.

That success, when Essex prevailed by an innings and 123 runs in a one-sided affair, afforded the county their first success away from Chelmsford to maintain the pressure on leaders Somerset.

The West Country side currently have a 15-point advantage over Essex, whilst Yorkshire start the game in third position and will be looking to reduce the 21 points which currently stand between them and second place.

Essex Captain, Ryan ten Doeschate was delighted to see his side chalk up a first victory away from Chelmsford. “It’s never easy to get a win away from home and that was a very flat wicket,” he said.

“I know Notts are bottom of the table and that they are having a tough time of it, but they are still a good side, so we’re delighted to come away with the points. That win made it five wins for us in the last six games and we are gathering momentum.”

Asked about the prospects of another tilt at the title the 39-year-old, who brought the Championship pennant back to Chelmsford in 2017 after a 25-year gap, stated: ” I think it’s important not to look too far ahead.

“We did make a slow start this season but now we are gathering momentum. I think to have a chance to win the Championship, you have to have to go on a run of exceptional form and Somerset have done that in the early part of the season.

“For anyone to challenge them you have to string a number of wins together.

“It was important that we beat them in our match at Chelmsford because had they won; it probably would have been too much of a gap to bridge.

“So, we’re giving ourselves a chance, there is a lot of confidence and belief in the squad. But there’s a long way to go yet, and all we can do is to keep chipping way and see what happens.”

Yorkshire arrive in good heart having beaten Surrey in their latest Championship match and completing victory – their third of the season – with just five minutes to spare.

Essex squad to face Yorkshire:

Ryan ten Doeschate (Captain) (27)
Aaron Beard (14)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Nick Browne (10)
Alastair Cook (26)

Dan Lawrence (28)

Browne Looking to Take Form in Yorkshire Clash

The celebratory fist pump Nick Browne performed on reaching his hundred at Trent Bridge spoke volumes as two long years of pent-up frustration were finally released.

Browne had waited since mid-summer 2017, and his 221 in the pink-ball game against Middlesex, before passing three-figures for the 15th time in his first-class career.

“It’s been a long time coming,” the 28-year-old left-hander admitted after his 163 against Nottinghamshire ended the drought. “It’s been frustrating not being able to kick on and get that big score.

“I wouldn’t say it played on my mind, but I think it’s always going to be there if you haven’t scored the runs you wanted to score.

“I’ve been hitting the ball nicely the last month or so. I always thought only time would tell, to be honest. I felt I was going to make someone pay at some stage. But I kept finding ways to get out after getting starts. I finally got there – and it felt brilliant.”

Last season his form was restricted by a debilitating hand injury suffered in the nets, and this year the Chelmsford wicket has not been conducive to excessive run-scoring. The ball has kept low and Essex have only once compiled more than 241 in the first innings, despite winning all four Specsavers County Championship matches at home.

Browne, too, had struggled in the first half of this summer, scoring 252 runs at an average of just under 23, before his seven-and-a-half-hour marathon at Notts took him to 415 at 34.58. Not that averages hold much sway in the Essex changing room.

“Because the wickets at Chelmsford have been hard to bat on, I think it’s quite easy to get into ‘Oh, he’s getting low scores, he’s only averaging whatever’. It’s all relative to the wickets that we’ve been playing on. For us, it is all about outscoring the opposition and trying to get a lead on first innings. It’s about contributing and getting something on the board for our bowlers to bowl at.

“Yes, Trent Bridge was a much better wicket and I was able to play my game. As a batter I’d like to play on that every week. But we’re getting results at Chelmsford – and that’s all that matters really, isn’t it? We’re winning games on those types of wickets, so I wouldn’t want to change it.”

There has been a discernible change in approach from the usually obdurate Browne in recent weeks. He says: “The last few games at Chelmsford I decided that if it pitches up, I’ve got to hit it because there could be a good ball around the corner. In the Somerset game [when he scored identical 29s in each innings} I was trying to get runs before they got me.”

The four-day match at The Cloudfm County Ground against Yorkshire, starting on Sunday, marks the fifth anniversary of Browne’s maiden first-class hundred.

However, while there was a two-year hiatus between centuries Nos 14 and 15, there was only a day separating his first and second back in 2014 against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

“Was that really five years ago?” he says. “I think I’ve improved since then. I’m definitely more confident, definitely have more shots. I think I was a very limited player when I first started. Hopefully I can keep improving. And keep scoring hundreds. And winning games.”

Essex sit second in the Championship, 15 points behind Somerset, going into back-to-back home games against third-placed Yorkshire and Warwickshire before the T20 break.

Browne says: “We’re winning games at Chelmsford – there’ll be results there, we’re not worried about that – but if we can get wins away from home I can’t see why we can’t give Somerset a run for their money.

“We’ve got to hang on to their coat-tails until they slip up. I can’t see why we can’t push them right to the end. We had to stop their momentum and knock their confidence the other week at Chelmsford. Hopefully they’ll slip up again and we can take advantage.”

Nick Browne marked his performance against Nottinghamshire by signing a new two-year contract on Friday, which will keep him at the Club until at least the end of the 2021 season – Read More

Browne Commits Future with New Two-Year Deal

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that opening batsman, Nick Browne, has signed a contract extension and will stay with the Club until at least the end of the 2021 season.

The 28-year-old made his first-class debut in 2013 against Worcestershire and has gone on to score 5,327 first-class runs for the side at an average of 42.27. Browne was hugely influential for Essex during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, as the Club won the Specsavers County Championship Division Two and Division One titles, respectively.

He joins the list of homegrown players committing their futures to the Club in recent weeks and marked it with his highest score of the season, hitting 163 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Monday.

Browne is thrilled to sign an extension and said: “I’m delighted to sign a new contract with the Club for a further two years, as Essex is my boyhood club and very close to my heart.

“This is a golden era for Essex and I feel this squad of players can win a lot more trophies over the next few years.

“Playing in this team is an absolute delight, I have so many close friends and we are such a tight group of players and staff, which can continue to move forward towards winning more Championship titles.

“The team and I are focused on repaying the great support we receive from Members and supporters with success and enjoyable cricket.”

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is pleased to see Nick extend his contract and said: “Nick is a tremendous batsman and his runs have won us countless matches over the last few years.

“It’s no coincidence that our title-winning campaigns coincided with his best seasons with the bat. He’s integral to what we are trying to achieve, and he will almost certainly play a crucial role in any future triumphs at Essex.”

Tom Westley also signed a new three-year contract on Thursday, keeping him at Chelmsford until the end of the 2022 season – Read More.

Westley Signs Contract Extension

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that top-order batsman, Tom Westley, has signed a contract extension and will stay with the Club until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Vice-Captain Westley is an Essex Academy graduate and has gone on to make 152 first-class, 80 List A and 60 T20 appearances for the Club since making his debut in 2006.

The homegrown batsman had no hesitations in extending his contract and said: “I’m delighted to extend my contract at Essex County Cricket Club. I have been here since I was 13 in the Academy, and have only ever seen my career and future at Essex.

“I love the club and the supporters, so committing to Essex was straightforward. Hopefully I can repay their faith in me by scoring runs for Essex over the coming years.

“We have a very ambitious squad and coaching staff, and a fantastic dressing room, led by Ryan ten Doeschate and Anthony McGrath. Hopefully we can build on the success the Club has had in recent years and make this an era to remember.”

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is pleased to see Tom extend his contract and said: “Tom is a fantastic batsman and has scored plenty of runs for us over the years, so it’s great news for everyone associated with Essex that he’s extended his stay.

“He’s integral to what we are trying to build and achieve at the Club so it’s terrific that he’s going to be here for years to come.”

Essex Cricket Extend Partnership With Wilkin & Sons

Essex Cricket are delighted to announce that Wilkin & Sons have extended their partnership with the Club and will carry on sponsoring ‘The Tiptree Stand’ for the next three years.

Darrell Fox, Commercial Manager at Essex Cricket, is pleased that Wilkin & Sons have prolonged their partnership and said: “I’m immensely proud that Essex Cricket are working with one of the most famous brands in Essex with worldwide recognition. Tiptree have been a partner of the Club for well over 15 years and I’m looking forward to extending this long and happy relationship.

“Tiptree and Essex Cricket share the same values of being proud of their local heritage and the partnership is a great fit for both brands, with the Tiptree products being used across The Cloudfm County Ground. I would challenge any restaurant or venue to offer a better homemade scone with jam than what Tiptree provide at Essex Cricket.”

Scott Goodfellow, Managing Director at Wilkin & Sons, said: “We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of this talented local team. We take great pride in our long-term partnership with Essex Cricket and we look forward to the next three years of high-quality cricket and fine hospitality at the Club”

Porter on Contracts, Wickets and Milestones

When Jamie Porter put pen to an extended two-year contract this week, he said he wanted to win more titles with Essex; then, with typical bullishness, he suggested the next title could be sooner rather than later…

What’s more, warming to his theme, Porter reckoned Essex could be sitting on top of the Specsavers County Championship by the time the Vitality Blast lifts off in three weeks’ time.

“We do feel invincible at the moment,” says the right-arm seamer whose 28 wickets so far this season have helped the 2017 champions to within 13 points of leaders Somerset, despatched so handsomely at the start of the week.

With the contract fresh in his pocket, Porter says: “I feel very privileged to be in the position I’m in. I’ve come from a very simple background and I’ve experienced what life in the real world is like. Yes, [the contract] gives you a little bit of comfort, but it is more importantly about being with this group of guys, who I love playing cricket with, for another two years.

“I feel like we’ve got a side who can win more titles, and I certainly want to be part of that group.”

With the Warwickshire fixture on July 13 flipped from waterlogged New Road to Chelmsford, it means Essex have another home game ahead of the high-summer T20 block. Since they are on a roll of four successive wins at Chelmsford – six in seven going back to last season – the advantage of the venue change at this stage cannot be under-estimated.

“We’ve proved that we’re very, very hard to beat at home,” says Porter. “Having an extra home game in this period can only help us. This is probably the make-or-break part of the season, and if we can come out of this stretch of five back-to-back games – why not, say, with four wins and maybe a good draw – then I think we’ll be sitting top of the league going into the T20. And that will be a very nice position to be in with four games to play.”

Porter is hitting wicket-taking form at just the right time, not only claiming his 300th first-class career victim but sharing 16 of the Somerset wickets to fall with the fast-emerging Aaron Beard.

“It was quite a proud moment for me, getting the 300th wicket,” says the 26-year-old. “It’s a weird one, to be honest. I guess my job is just to keep taking wickets and sometimes these milestones just creep up on you. I don’t really work towards them, I just work towards putting in the best performances I can in every game and when they come up it’s a massive privilege.”

Beard swooped to nab the last three Somerset wickets to deny Porter the chance of taking 10 in a match for only the third time. Not that Porter was bothered. “We don’t really care who the individuals are who put in the performances as long as we’re getting the wins. Beardy deserved every one of those wickets. He’s a great kid and it’s nice to see him come in and not be fazed. It was potentially the biggest game we’ll play all season in red-ball cricket, and he came in and took seven wickets in the match.

“Some of those balls were unplayable. Even I dream of some of the balls he bowled. The thing that really excites me about Beardy is he can bowl balls no one else can bowl. There’s so much more to come from him.

“He has a very natural whip, so he will very rarely just bowl you a straight up-and-down delivery. He can swing it, he can create awkward angles, put the ball in nasty areas and ask questions of the batters.”

Next up are bottom-of-the-table Nottinghamshire on Sunday (30 June) before back-to-back home games against Yorkshire and Warwickshire. Not that success at Trent Bridge will be taken for granted. “You look at their side on paper and there are some serious players,” says Porter. “Things haven’t gone their way, but that doesn’t mean they’re not capable of beating us next week. We need to make sure we’re on the money.”

ECB confirms venue switch for Warwickshire versus Essex

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has today agreed for Warwickshire and Essex to swap their home and away fixtures in the Specsavers County Championship following the recent flooding of Blackfinch New Road, Worcester.

With Edgbaston currently unavailable for domestic cricket due to the fact that it is hosting matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Warwickshire had agreed terms with Worcestershire to use Blackfinch New Road as the home venue for our starting on Saturday 13 July.

However, this match will now be played at The Cloudfm County Ground with the return match to start at Edgbaston on Tuesday 10 September.

Alan Fordham, ECB Head of Cricket Operations (First Class), said: “There are extreme circumstances behind this switch of venue and the combination of Edgbaston hosting ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches and the unfortunate situation at Worcester has forced us to review all options and this outcome is the only practical solution for these two counties as well as their Members and supporters.

“Normally we wouldn’t ask Warwickshire to host a County Championship match so close to the Vitality Blast Finals Day on 21 September as we always aim to provide as much preparation time as possible but we have been assured that this will not have an adverse impact on Warwickshire’s ability to host this prestigious event.”

Derek Bowden, Essex Cricket Chief Executive, said: “Having discussed the options with the ECB, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, the sensible decision is to swap the fixtures to accommodate both matches.

“We hope this hasn’t caused an inconvenience to our Members and supporters who were planning on making the trip to Worcester, but this was the only viable solution.

“This now gives us an unexpected additional home fixture in the height of the summer, which I’m sure will be a great four days at Chelmsford ahead of the Vitality Blast competition beginning.”

Neil Snowball, Chief Executive at Warwickshire CCC, said: “We were looking forward to holding our home match against Essex at Blackfinch New Road in July and Matt Rawnsley and his team have been extremely accommodating. However, as soon as we saw the images of the recent flooding, we knew this would be a challenge and started to look at alternative options.

“I have been in regular contact with Matt over the last 10 days, offering our support but also talking through the likelihood of continuing with the fixture in Worcester and ultimately this proved impossible despite the best efforts of everyone concerned.

“We’re very grateful to the ECB and also to Derek Bowden and his team at Essex for their support and understanding while considering our options for what was, in effect, already a contingency venue. We look forward to the trip to The Cloudfm County Ground on 13 July and the return fixture in September.”

Porter Pens Contract Extension

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that opening bowler, Jamie Porter, has signed a contract extension and will stay with the Club until at least the end of the 2021 season.

The 26-year-old has made a huge impression since making his debut in 2014, and has taken 277 first-class wickets for the side at an average of 24.58.

He played an instrumental role for the Club during the 2017 season, taking 75 wickets as Essex captured a first Championship in 25 years. His performances saw him collect several accolades, including the Wisden Cricketer of the Year.

Porter finished the 2018 campaign as the Club’s leading wicket-taker after recording 73 dismissals across all formats. This included 58 wickets in the Championship, meaning he surpassed the 50 mark for the fourth successive season (2015-2018).

Porter is pleased to sign an extension and said: “I’m really excited to extend my contract and commit my future to this great Club.

“As a team, we’ve gone from strength-to-strength over the last four or five years. We’ve tasted success and everyone in the dressing room believes further titles and honours are not far away.

“As a player, all you want to do is win, and the fact I believe this team will be consistently winning and competing for trophies made the decision to sign an extension much easier.”

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is also pleased to see Jamie extend his stay and said: “Jamie is one of the best bowlers in the country and a massive player for us both on and off the pitch, so I’m elated he’s committed his future.

“He’s integral to what we are trying to build and achieve at the Club so it’s fantastic that he’s going to be here for years to come.”

Match Preview: Essex v Somerset

Essex meet Somerset on Sunday at The Cloudfm County Ground in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash.

The visitors are currently top of Division One and are so far unbeaten in the competition, having won five of their six matches.

Essex have named a 13-man squad for Sunday’s match which includes Peter Siddle, who is expected to have recovered from the niggle that forced him to miss the win over Hampshire earlier this week.

However, Sam Cook is now an absentee. The 21-year-old right-arm seamer sustained a side injury whilst bowling during that match and has undergone a scan to discover the full extent of the injury.

Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath said: “Sunday’s match is a massive game for us. Like ourselves, they are winning games and they have been the form team of the season so far in both red-ball and 50-overs cricket.

“They have also won in low-scoring games, so it looks to be a great game in prospect between two in-form teams who are now going head-to-head.

“We’ve got four games in as many weeks which is going to be a big ask on the lads and we are going to need all the squad.”

McGrath will hope that off-spinner Simon Harmer can continue his rich vein of form that has seen him bag 42 wickets this year in the Championship, with 31 of those in just three matches at Chelmsford.

McGrath added: “He is an exceptional talent, he’s a magic man and the complete spinner. He is dangerous on any surface and if he gets the slightest bit of encouragement, he seems to exploit the conditions expertly.

“Each batsman will have their own ideas of how to play him, but he seems to have an answer for most of them.

“It won’t always be like that of course, we know things go in cycles but, at the moment, he’s hot and long may that continue.”

Essex squad to face Somerset:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (captain)
Aaron Beard (14)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Nick Browne (10)
Varun Chopra (6)
Alastair Cook (26)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Peter Siddle (64)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31) (wicket-keeper)
