Match Preview: Glamorgan v Essex

Glamorgan v Essex
Vitality Blast
Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
Friday 09 June, 6:30pm

After defeating both Sussex Sharks and Kent Spitfires in the space of two days, the Eagles travel to Cardiff with the aim of winning three in a row and leaping Glamorgan into the top four.

Essex will be spurred on after defeating local rivals Kent Spitfires away on Wednesday evening, which included a hat-trick from Sam Cook. A second hat-trick in just under a week for the Eagles in the 2023 Vitality Blast.

Hosts Glamorgan will be looking to get back to winning ways at home after falling to defeat against Surrey at Sophia Gardens on Wednesday evening.

Squad:

Head Coach Anthony McGrath has named a 14-player squad for the trip to Wales.

Adam Rossington is ruled out after injuring his finger against Sussex Sharks on Tuesday and Dan Lawrence has returned back to England duty after recently being named in the 16-player Ashes squad.

Will Buttleman retains a spot in the matchday squad after scoring an important 17* at Canterbury to help Essex to the finishing line.

Essex glamorgan squad

The Opposition: Glamorgan

Captain: Kiran Carlson
Overseas players: Colin Ingram (South Africa), Peter Hatzoglou (Australia)
Finals Day appearances: 2 (2004, 2017)
Titles: 0
2022 finish: Group Stage
2022 leading run-scorer: Sam Northeast (510)
2022 leading wicket-taker: Michael Hogan (20)

Glamorgan have secured the services of Colin Ingram for the next two years and he will be available throughout the campaign, but will be without Michael Hogan, their leading wicket taker in 2022, who is now with Kent Spitfires.

Dan Douthwaite is more than capable of a match-winning performance with the bat and the ball and is currently Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker heading into this match. As a big hitting all-rounder he is the kind of player The Hundred teams could be looking for if he continues his good start in the Blast.

With just two Finals Day appearances and no titles, the Blast is a big gap in Glamorgan’s record that they will be looking to fill in 2023.

In order to claim that first Blast title much will depend on the performance of the white-ball players who have not been part of the County Championship games so far when they come into the team.

Match Highlights:

Match Reaction: Sam Cook

“It was nice to get the wickets but even more special to get it in a winning cause, that’s the most important thing. We were happy to restrict them to 150 and to knock it off. The way Critch [Matt Critchley] played, Butters [Will Buttleman] played well at the end all the lads chipped in, so it was a good win on what appeared to be a tricky wicket.

“Especially over the last two years, even though we did win it in 2019 I think we’re a much, much better side than we were then. I think we’ve really evolved, we’ve had a bit of a change of personnel with young lads coming in and new faces, but everyone contributing is the most pleasing thing.

“Everyone that’s come in has done a job and for Will Buttleman coming in at the end, it could have been tricky if he’d got out so to smack one out the park and kill the game like he did was really impressive and that’s what it’s all about, everyone’s got to contribute and so far this season that’s been the case.

“To be honest I started the season pretty poorly in the powerplay so in the last couple of games I just tried to go back to basics as well, hit the seam and challenge the stumps and it’s worked for the last couple of nights.

“In this format you can try a million things and sometimes it better to just try and simplify things and go back to what you do well. It’s worked well in the last couple of games and hopefully it will in the future.”

Match Report:

Sam Cook took a hat-trick as Essex beat the Kent Spitfires by four wickets in the Vitality Blast at Canterbury.

The visitors recovered from an early-innings scare to close on 155 for six, Matt Critchley hitting an unbeaten 63.

Cook had taken four for 18 as Kent were held to 150 for eight, which actually represented a recovery. Joe Denly was the top scorer with 39 and Grant Stewart gave the hosts something to bowl at with 37 from 16 balls, but after slumping to 31 for four, Critchley’s measured innings saw Essex home with 10 balls to spare.

Kent’s decision to bat backfired when, having put on 32 for the opening wicket, they were rocked by a spell of four runs for four wickets in eight balls.

Daniel Bell-Drummond got away with an ugly shot off Shane Snater that sailed over the boundary, but he hit the next ball almost vertically and was caught by Feroze Khushi for 22.

Cook then sent Tawanda Muyeye’s stumps flying before getting Sam Billings caught behind for a golden duck and he claimed his first Blast hat-trick when Jordan Cox was plumb lbw.

With under five overs gone the remaining batters had little choice other than to drop anchor and Jack Leaning had made nine from 20 balls when he hit Critchley to Daniel Sams at forward square leg.

When Simon Harmer’s 15th over went for just two the old joke about it not being a test match leapt to mind, but the charge finally came in the 17th when George Linde hit Harmer for six, only to edge the next ball straight to Robin Das.

When Cook bowled Denly, Grant Stewart was left with the tail, but an eight-ball final over from Sams went for 27, including two sixes from Stewart, who was eventually caught by Das off the fifth legitimate delivery. A misfield allowed Kent to scramble two off the last ball, but the total still looked below par, until Essex started to bat.

Fred Klaassen, back after missing the start of the Blast for personal reasons, had Khushi lbw with the second ball of the innings.

It was one for two when Dan Lawrence edged Michael Hogan’s first ball down the leg side where he was brilliantly caught by Billings.

Hogan then bowled Das’s middle stump for 11, breaking Sky’s stump camera and when Michael Pepper went for 13, skying Kane Richardson to Billings Essex were 31 for four, but Paul Walter and Critchley steadied their nerves.

The former made 27 from 15 before he cut Stewart to Leaning and Sams chipped in with 17 before Linde bowled him.

Critchley never allowed the run rate to escalate while Will Buttleman survived an lbw shout from Linde and then reverse swept him for four, before hitting Hogan for six into the Old Dover Road gardens.

Fittingly Critchley hit the winning runs when he hit Joe Denly for six over cow corner.

The win keeps Essex well in contention for Finals Day and a fifth consecutive defeat leaves Kent’s hopes of qualifying looking almost skeletal.

Match Preview: Essex v Sussex Sharks & Kent Spitfires

Essex v Sussex Sharks | Kent Spitfires v Essex
Vitality Blast
The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford | The Spitfire Ground, Canterbury
Tuesday 06 June, 7pm | Wednesday 07 June, 6:30pm

Following Sunday narrow defeat to Somerset in Taunton, the Eagles have an opportunity to return to action with a double header, starting with the visit of Sussex Sharks.

Essex will be spurred on after defeating the Sharks 25-runs last week at Hove, which included a special hat-trick from the skipper, Simon Harmer.

Following Tuesday’s match, Essex head on the road for two games in three days with the highly anticipated Battle of the Bridge against Kent Spitfires taking place on Wednesday.

Squad:

Head Coach Anthony McGrath has named a 14-player squad that will face both Sussex Sharks and Kent Spitfires.

After missing the game against Somerset on Sunday, Feroze Khushi and Dan Lawrence return to the matchday squads. Khushi came through Monday’s Second XI match against Hampshire unscathed following his arm injury against Hampshire Hawks on Friday evening, whilst Dan Lawrence returns from England duty to boost Anthony McGrath’s matchday squad.

Sussex squadKent squad

The Opposition: Sussex Sharks

Captain: Ravi Bopara
Overseas players: Shadab Khan (Pakistan), Nathan McAndrew (Australia)
Finals Day appearances: 5 (2007, 2009, 2012, 2018, 2021)
Titles: 1 (2009)
2022 finish: Group Stage
2022 leading run-scorer: Tom Alsop (318)
2022 leading wicket-taker: Tymal Mills (15)

Key winter moves: Luke Wright’s retirement has left a big hole in the top order, but the Sharks have recruited well from overseas. Nathan McAndrew had a good Big Bash with Sydney Thunder and brings new-ball experience and middle-order hitting potential while the experienced Shadab Khan is a player with vast experience at international level to replace Rashid Khan.

Squad: Ravi Bopara (c), Tom Alsop, Michael Burgess, Tom Clark, James Coles, Henry Crocombe, Tom Haines, Fynn Husdon-Prentice, Dan Ibrahim, Ari Karvelas, Shadab Khan, Nathan McAndrew, Tymal Mills.

The Opposition: Kent Spitfires

Captain: Sam Billings
Overseas players: Kane Richardson (Australia), Wes Agar (Australia)
Finals Day appearances: 4 (2007, 2008, 2009,2021)
Titles: 2 (2007, 2021)
2022 finish: Group Stage
2022 leading run-scorer: Joe Denly (423)
2022 leading wicket-taker: Qais Ahmed & Grant Stewart (14)

Darren Stevens has gone, but the nucleus of the side that won the title in 2021 before tanking a year later is basically intact. Mystery spinner Qais Ahmad was less of a mystery second time out so the Spitfires have gone for Kane Richardson’s proven T20 pedigree. Billings has also been a mainstay in the side this year after spurning the IPL and this match is always an exciting one given the rivalry.

Engaging Eagles: Cricket Brings Hope in Essex

Wakman was a professional fast bowler in his native Afghanistan before he was forced to flee and seek refuge in the UK when the Taliban returned to power.

The 20-year-old was an interpreter with the American Armed Forces before the withdrawal of NATO troops from the region in 2021, leaving him vulnerable to reprisals.

“The Taliban want me to go back to Afghanistan, but I can’t because they will kill me because I worked with the Americans,” said Waknam (pseudonym) who has found a route back into cricket thanks to the Changing Lives charity.

“My family are still in Afghanistan and they face terrible trouble. The Taliban went to my house. They say: ‘We want to capture Wakman because he worked with the American forces. We want Wakman from you’.

“They captured my father and they cut off his finger and every day they want me.”

Wakman escaped in September by paying $18,000 (about £14,500) for a tortuous journey by plane and car through Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany and France.

“Finally I came here by boat. The boat was made up from parachutes. There were 64 of us on board,” he said

During the asylum process, and sitting in his hotel room on the outskirts of east London, Wakman’s thoughts again turned to cricket. A chance conversation at reception led to a meeting with the Harlow-based charity Changing Lives.

“We love cricket and wanted to play cricket with somebody,” he said. “Changing Lives came to our hotel and we spoke with them. They said, ‘No worries, we will start cricket for you’. And now every day they come and pick us up and we go everywhere by minibus.”

The story is taken up by Changing Lives co-director Ben Doyle, who is also an Essex Cricket coach and involved in the Chance to Shine initiative for primary school children.

“We had already been involved with refugees from places like Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine, but they were more interested in football,” Doyle said. “Now we have around 25 from Pakistan and Afghanistan who want to play cricket.

“They tell us crazy stories about escaping from the Taliban. They are here for a better life and to support families back at home who haven’t had the opportunity to escape their war-torn countries.

“We’ve had a couple of them who have played the professional game. One of them could have played for a county team, but he hasn’t got his papers yet. They are not allowed to work while they are seeking asylum.”

Essex have supported Changing Lives by supplying equipment in the shape of kit and clothing, bats, balls, gloves and helmets, as well as initially funding sessions and hosting a tournament against Southend University at the Cloud County Ground.

“Our pathway plan is to get them into a league,” says Doyle. “We only started in January and were a bit late applying to join a league this year, so we’re using this season to train and get friendlies where we can.”

Wakman has also been able to play for a team in the London League. In a recent game he claimed four wickets.
“I was player of the match,” he says proudly.

Essex will celebrate the work carried out by Changing Lives and other local charities, companies and projects at the Engaging Eagles Community Night as part of their home Vitality Blast game against Sussex Sharks on Tuesday, June 6.

The team will be guests of the Club on Tuesday evening with a chance to hear more about the great work carried out by Changing Lives charity.
