Match Report:

James Vince followed up becoming the Vitality Blast’s highest run scorer by chalking up his fifth T20 century as Hampshire Hawks annihilated Essex.

Vince is now only behind Michael Klinger in Blast hundreds having overtaken Luke Wright in the run charts on Wednesday, and only Wayne Madsen has more than his 280 runs in this year’s competition.

His supreme 103 laid the foundations for a huge 215 target for the Eagles, which Nathan Ellis’ three for 10, Scott Currie’s three for 21 and Liam Dawson’s four for 21 made sure was never chasable.

Defending champions Hampshire eventually won by 118 runs – the Hawks’ highest margin of victory after bowling the hosts out for 96 – with 35 balls to spare to hand Essex their first T20 defeat of the year.

Vince continued from his back-to-back unbeaten 88s, and his record-breaking, by pumping Aron Nijjar for two massive sixes back over his head with his first two balls faced having been asked to bat first.

Ben McDermott was adjudged caught behind while Toby Albert took nine balls to get off the mark but Vince was terrorising the crowd and local residents – his eventual eight sixes threatened the slate and chimneys of the houses at the Hayes Close End.

He monopolised the run-scoring, including 60 of the 101 stand with Albert – who improved his hitting to reach 38 before he was stumped.

Vince was cleanly striking anything that was sent his way and brought up his century with another pulled maximum in 45 balls.

He was furious when he slapped a Matt Critchley long hop to the deep midwicket boundary which began five wickets falling for 35 runs.

Joe Weatherley had made a well-compiled 29 before he was caught at cover to follow Ross Whiteley, Aneurin Donald and James Fuller’s short stays.

But a tame finale was avoided when Liam Dawson slog-swept three successive sixes to take 21 off the final over and give Hampshire 214. Daniel Sams was the only bowler not to go at a double figure run-rate for his three for 28, although Simon Harmer also pilfered three wickets.

Essex tried to swing their way to victory but plays and misses dominated, despite Adam Rossington pumped two early sixes before unfortunately been given caught behind after the ball appeared to clip his stump rather than his bat.

Dan Lawrence was lbw after 22 off 14, Feroze Khushi yorked by Dawson, Paul Walter stumped, Robin Das swatted to long off, Tom Westley drilled to cover and Nathan Ellis bowled Harmer. It had been a spell of five wickets in 23 balls for 20 runs.

Dawson pinned Nijjar before Sams gave Vince his third catch of the night and Ellis his third wicket to finish off the comprehensive away victory.

Match Report:

Essex’s second string were beaten by their Sussex counterparts in what proved to be a close Second XI T20 South Group encounter at Garon Park, Southend.

On a blustery afternoon beside the seaside, Sussex posted 213 for seven.
Daniel Ibrahim’s forty minutes in the middle gleaned 80 runs off 36 balls before he was trapped lbw by Hayden Goulstone. His innings included three 4s and seven 6s. Meanwhile, Harrison Ward contributed 46 off 32

Goulstone was the pick of the Essex attack, returning figures of four for 31 from his four-over spell. Noah Thain took 2/23 off two, while Jamie Porter was also amongst the wickets.

Essex did their utmost to remain within touching distance. Will Buttleman top-scored, hitting an unbeaten 78 off 43 balls, including ten 4s and three 6s.

But the chase proved to be just too much for the homes side. Thain chipped in with 36, while skipper Aaron Beard scored 25 and Josh Rymell 24, the latter superbly caught by Brad Currie off a delivery from Sean Hunt.

Match Preview: Essex v Sussex & Hampshire

Sussex Sharks v Essex | Essex v Hampshire Hawks
Vitality Blast
The 1st Central County Ground, Hove | The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford
Thursday 01 June | Friday 02 June
7pm Start

Essex take on both Sussex Sharks and Hampshire Hawks over the next two days looking to make it three wins from three in the Vitality Blast.

Both Sussex and Hampshire have played two games so far in the competition with the two sides having won one and lost one.

After a three-wicket victory over Gloucestershire on Tuesday night, the Eagles will be keen to continue to keep up their winning form.

Squad:

Head Coach Anthony McGrath has named an unchanged 13 player squad for the fixtures against Sussex Sharks and Hampshire Hawks

After scoring his maiden first-class century and maiden T20 half-century in just the last four days, Robin Das retains a spot in the Essex squad.

Essex squad updated sussex
hampshire updated squad

Sussex squad: Ravi Bopara (c), Tom Alsop, Michael Burgess, Oli Carter, Tom Clark, James Coles, Henry Crocombe, Brad Currie, George Garton, Tom Haines, Finn Hudson-Prentice, Ari Karvelas, Shadab Khan, Tymal Mills, Harrison Ward.

Hampshire squad: James Vince (c), Toby Albert, Mason Crane, Scott Currie, Liam Dawson, Aneurin Donald, Nathan Ellis, James Fuller, Ben McDermott, Tom Prest, John Turner, Joe Weatherley, Ross Whiteley, Chris Wood.

The Opposition:

Sussex:

Luke Wright’s retirement will leave a big hole in the top order, but the Sharks have recruited well from overseas. Nathan McAndrew had a good Big Bash with Sydney Thunder and brings new-ball experience and middle-order hitting potential while the experienced Shadab Khan looks an ideal replacement for Rashid Khan.
The side from the West Country visit Chelmsford after taking on Kent, Glamorgan and Middlesex in their opening there games.

Ali Orr – In Wright’s absence Orr is likely to get an extended opportunity at the top of the order. He has only played eight T20 games in his career but has all the shots in white-ball cricket, as he proved in 2022 when he scored Sussex’s first List A double hundred against Somerset.

Hampshire:

Hampshire are aiming to become the first side to win back-to-back Vitality Blast titles. They started their title defence in the worst possible fashion, being defeated by unbeaten Somerset by 8 wickets. But the side from Southampton responded well and showed true class as they comfortably beat Middlesex by the same scoreline they were beat after chasing 172.

Other than McDermott, almost all of Hampshire’s likely starters already have a Hundred gig locked down. Prest is the legible man out, although he spurned the big lights to guarantee playing time in the One Day Cup last year. Aneurin Donald and Scott Currie are outside bets if they break into the Hawks line-up.

View from inside the camp:

Robin Das:

“It was good to start the campaign with a win and a good performance all round. We were good with the ball to restrict them under 200 and it was a pretty comfortable chase in the end as well.

“There is a lot of scope for things to go better but I guess I’ve had worse weeks! I am really happy with how the week has gone and hopefully can keep the ball rolling and keep the momentum going.

“I want to be involved in every game but we have such a talented and deep squad that you can’t expect to play every game. I’m always hungry to play and contribute to the team.

“It is very pleasing to contribute with Feroze. I have played with him since club cricket at the aged of 13 or 14. It is nice to play with those players you grew up with and shows a really strength to our club; players coming through the pathways and into the first team.”

How To Watch:

A free live stream of both fixtures will be available courtesy of our hosts and on our YouTube channel on Friday night. You will be able to access them through The Essex Cricket Matchzone, which includes player stats, scorecards and clips throughout the game.
