Essex Ability XI ready to take on Middlesex

Essex Ability get down to business this weekend, opening their D40 Pursuit campaign with a game against old adversaries Middlesex at Greenford.

It has been a busy winter for the players, preparing ahead of a season full of promise. Head Coach Patrick Ward spoke about the commitment and effort the respective Ability squads have put in during the close season.

“The guys have worked really hard this winter”, he explained.

“It’s nice because it is probably three years since we had a full winter of training, obviously because of COVID restrictions and the limitations this brought.

It seems as if we have been training for a long time. We started back in December. The effort that the guys have put in has been amazing.

“We started with some fitness work, whilst also working on fielding and specific sessions around bowling, batting and game-based scenarios. We finished up with two lengthy sessions around toning our game-play and getting everyone fresh for the first game this coming weekend.”

It has been easy to identify the enthusiasm running through the group, “The energy after last Sunday’s training was amazing.”

“Everyone was buzzing when they came out and this has been down to the effort they have all put in, which has been helped by a few new faces as well. This has meant we’ve had really good numbers in the group and strong sessions have come as a result.

“But also because we have had a couple of years of interrupted preparations due to the restrictions when we were training over the past few years.

“Everyone has been able to go through 12-13 sessions since we started back. We planned it and progressed them knowing it would lead up to this point where the players should be at the level we wanted coming to this week. It’s fantastic to see that they’ve reached this level and are flying.”

Matches between Essex and Middlesex are always eagerly anticipated encounters and Sunday’s clash at the William Perkins School will be no different. “Hopefully, the weather picks up from last week. Cricket in April is always a bit iffy and you never quite know what you are going to get.”

“It is a good pitch at Middlesex and well looked after so hopefully it will drain efficiently and we can get off to a positive start.

Match Report:

Essex’s Second XI and their Kent counterparts provided another run-fest despite their Second XI County Championship encounter being severely affected by the weather.

With the first day washed out and prospects of further play appearing bleak, the decision was taken to switch the fixture from the Polo Sports Ground to Kent’s traditional St Lawrence Ground.

The venue had proved to be batter-friendly when the side’s First XI’s had met a week previously, with Essex Nick Browne and Tom Westly along with Kent’s Zak Crawley scoring impressive centuries. That (again) proved to be the case, with Robin Das, Feroze Khushi, Will Buttleman and Tawanda Muyeye achieving similar feats.

Das was in fine form for the visitors, scoring an unbeaten 116 off 207 balls during his 325-minutes in the middle.

Khushi and Aron Nijjar passed fifty, while Aaron Beard fell one short as Essex made up for lost time before declaring their innings on 301-6. George Linde was the pick of the Kent attack, returning bowling figures of 2/49 from his 17 overs.

Nevertheless, it was the home side who established a 25-run first-innings advantage. Muyeye’s 100 came off 92 balls, including fourteen 4s and three 6s. Linde was amongst the runs, scoring 87, while skipper Marcus O’Riordan chipped in with 59 before the Kent decoration. Alex Gosling took 3/22 from his three-over spell for the visitors.

Khushi continued his superb form with the bat. This time the talented 23-year-old scored 152 off just 164 balls during a 204-minute stint. His innings included no less than seventeen 4s and four 6s. Buttleman got in on the act, finishing unbeaten on 100.

Kent had reached 147/7 before the contest concluded as a draw. Harry Finch hit 52 while Essex’s Luc Benkenstein impressed with the ball, claiming 4/19 from his 6 overs.

Durham: 186 & 439
Essex: 190 and 164

Match Report:

Essex were beaten by a strong Durham side as they got the Second XI County Championship campaign underway in the picturesque surroundings of Woolpit Cricket Club.

The bowlers dominated proceedings with fifteen wickets falling on an action-packed opening day.

Ben Allison provided the small crowd with an eye-catching performance. The bowler claimed six Durham wickets for 41 runs from his thirteen overs, which included a triple-wicket maiden as the visitors lost their last eight batters for just 41 runs.

Aaron Beard chipped in with 2/51 as Durham were dismissed for 186. Skipper, Ben McKinney top scored with 81 off 90 balls before he became Allison’s sixth victim.

Durham’s Brandon Glover and Daniel Hogg kept the bowling trend in line, with exceptional figures of 4/25 and 4/16, respectively. However, Essex managed to forge a narrow first innings lead thanks to half-centuries from Will Buttleman and Ben Allison.

Buttleman scored 50 off 128 balls, while Allison’s 53 came from 103 balls and included six 4s.

But the game swiftly turned the way of the visitors, thanks to some excellent batting performances. Liam Trevaskis top-scored for Durham with 75, while Michael Killeen (66), Harry Crawshaw (64) and George Drissell (59) carried Durham to a mammoth 439 and a sizable lead of 376. Luc Benkenstein was the pick of the Essex attack, returning figures of 5/66.

The chase was always going to be a huge task for Essex, and so it proved. Killeen’s incredible nine-and-a-half overs yielded seven Essex wickets for just 20 runs as the home side were dismissed for 164.

Benkenstein followed up his impressive bowling performance by top scoring with 69 off 90 balls. However, with those around him falling relatively cheaply, Durham’s victory was confirmed with plenty to spare.

Match Preview: Kent v Essex

Kent v Essex
LV= Insurance County Championship
The Spitfire Ground, Canterbury
Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 April
11am Start

Essex travel to local neighbours Kent on Thursday morning looking to continue the unbeaten start in the 2023 LV= Insurance County Championship.

A win against Middlesex and a draw against title favourites Lancashire sees Essex sitting in third place as Round 3 gets underway this week.

After an agonising defeat away at Warwickshire in Round 2, the hosts will be heading into the game with Essex aiming to get back to winning ways.

Squad:

There are two injury forced changes to the Essex 13-player squad with Sam Cook missing out due to a muscle tightness in his hamstring. Adam Rossington will also sit out the fixture after injuring his finger during the draw against Lancashire.

Kent squad:

Sam Billings (c)
Wes Agar
Daniel Bell-Drummond
Ben Compton
Jordan Cox
Zak Crawley
Joey Evison
Nathan Gilchrist
Hamid Qadri
Jack Leaning
Conor McKerr
Grant Stewart

The Opposition:

Ollie Robinson’s departure to Durham arguably vexed members even more than the decision to release 46-year-old Darren Stevens, but Michael Hogan’s arrival should shore up an attack weakened by the loss of Harry Podmore.

Having missed out on Matt Henry, Arshdeep Singh was signed, but he’s only available for five games and the hunt for an overseas bowler continued.

To replace the Indian seamer, Kent moved quickly to sign a replacement. Australian quick Wes Agar joined the Club for the next four rounds of County Championship action and is set to make his debut this week. Connor McKerr is also named in the squad following his loan move from Surrey.

After defeating Northants in the opening round, the hosts visited Warwickshire last week aiming to make it two wins out of two. A stunning first innings from Sam Hain took the game away from Kent, but late resistance and 99 runs from new signing Joey Evison nearly earnt the away side a valuable draw.

Kent will be aiming to make it two consecutive wins at home when Essex travel across to Canterbury to continue the famous Battle of the Bridge rivalry.

Last Time We Met:

Essex comprehensively defeated Kent by an innings and 260 runs on day four of the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Canterbury.

Tom Westley’s team needed just 4.4 overs to claim the remaining two wickets on the final day and claim 23 points after bowling Kent out for 149.

Essex were in the ascendancy at Canterbury after reaching 327 for four at Stumps on Day One of their LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Kent.

Matt Critchley took advantage of being given a life on six to finish the day not out on 80 after Alastair Cook and Tom Westley had made half-centuries earlier in proceedings.

Despite winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Kent’s bowlers struggled to consistently challenge the bat on a slow pitch and too often they gave the Essex batters chances to score, which they accepted gratefully.

Khushi resumed play on Day Two, 46 not out and brought up his half-century off the first ball of the day, striking a Grant Stewart delivery through mid-wicket for four. A classy maiden first-class century arrived for the 23-year-old in his third Championship match, and it came from 228 balls and included two sixes and 18 fours.

Kent batters would have been sick of the sight of Ben Allison and Sam Cook, who tormented them on day three where 16 Kent wickets fell and Essex came unbearably close to completing a victory inside three days at Canterbury.

Each of the seamers came into the day in high spirits after striking their highest first-class scores in Essex’s first innings and Allison would have more to cheer about before the Lunch break, picking up 4/31 in the session on the way to another career-best.

Sam Cook took 10/60 in the match, including 7/33 in the second innings, while Jamie Porter claimed 3/50.

Jordan Cox was Kent’s top scorer with 65, but the result left in the hosts in deep relegation mire, having taken just a single point.

How To Watch:

If you’re unable to attend, the game will be streamed live from Canterbury and available to watch via the Essex Cricket Matchzone.

Miss the action? Highlights will be available after each day’s play via the Club website and social media channels.
