Take part in the Essex Super Sleep Out

CHESS Homeless and Essex Cricket Foundation have come together to host the first ever Essex Super Sleep Out at The Cloud County Ground on the eve of the first home match of the season against Lancashire on Wednesday 12 April 2023.

Will Sutherland ruled out of overseas stint

Essex Cricket can regrettably confirm this morning that Will Sutherland will no longer be joining the Club this year after being ruled out through injury.

After representing Victoria in the Sheffield Shield final, Sutherland received results of a scan that revealed the Australian all-rounder has a stress fracture in his back.

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath commented: “It’s really unfortunate that Will has injured himself so close to the 2023 season. We were all looking forward to welcoming him to Chelmsford and we’re sorry to hear he will face a period of time recovering from his stress fracture.

“Everyone at the Club wishes Will a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back on the pitch soon.”

Pre-Season Preview: Kent v Essex

The Spitfire Ground in Canterbury will host Essex’s final pre-season fixture as they take on Kent in a three-day friendly before the 2023 County Championship season gets underway next week.

After a two-day intra-squad fixture last week at Chelmsford, Anthony McGrath’s side will travel down to Kent as they look to put the finishing touches on what has been a strong pre-season campaign.

Spectators are welcome to attend all three days for this fixture, with free entry and no tickets required.

LIVE STREAMING

The home side will provide a Live Stream without commentary, but fans can also keep up to date via the Matchzone on the Essex Cricket website.

TEAM NEWS

Essex head to Canterbury with no current injury concerns. South African spinner Simon Harmer landed back in the UK last week after representing his country against the West Indies earlier this month and will be available to play if selected.

Hosts Kent will also have the majority of their County Championship squad available. Sam Billings and Jordan Cox have returned following their Pakistan Super League win over the weekend and are available for selection.

Michael Pepper picked by London Spirit in the Hundred draft

Michael Pepper will play for London Spirit in this year’s edition of The Hundred after being picked up in the competition’s draft on Thursday.

Pepper, who featured in the Hundred for the first time in 2022 for the Northern Superchargers, joins up with Adam Rossington and Dan Lawrence, who was named as their team captain earlier this week.

The Women’s competition featured a draft for the first time with Essex and Sunrisers player, Mady Villiers returning to Oval Invincibles once again.

Other Essex players featuring in this year’s competition and subsequently unavailable for the One Day Cup are Sam Cook (Trent Bridge) and Paul Walter (Manchester Originals), who were both retained by their respective teams.

England Over-50s are World Champions

Essex trio Giles Ecclestone, Charlie Knightley, Mohammed Fayyaz and the England over-50s squad were victorious in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final on Monday evening at the famous Newlands Cricket Stadium against tournament hosts South Africa.

After a delayed start to proceedings, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first which allowed Essex’s own Giles Ecclestone  to open up and give England the upper hand early on. An opportunity which he took with both hands as he went on to score a magnificent 120 off 103 balls with bat in hand. England never lost momentum throughout the innings and managed to post a strong 267/8 from their 40 overs.

The South Africa side started their reply poorly with two quick wickets falling early on. From there the Proteas’ chase never got going, falling behind the required run rate and with 10 overs to go needed to score at 13 runs per over.

Fayaaz performed well with ball ending with figures of 1/35 off his 8 overs.

England ran out winners by 65 runs in the fading light and in front of a strong crowd at Newlands and became well deserved World Cup Winners after losing just one game throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to Giles, Charlie and Mohammed and the whole England squad on their fantastic achievement!

Introducing the 2023 playing kits

As the new Essex crest is revealed, we are delighted to launch our new playing kits for the 2023 season.

The new crest will be emblazoned on all three playing shirts, with the LV= Insurance County Championship and Vitality Blast kits also sporting a fresh design for 2023.

The new red-ball kit combines the traditional with the contemporary as an off-white shirt is paired with the classic Essex red, yellow and blue taping on the sides, shoulders and collar.

The Championship kit again features long-time sponsor D&B Scaffolding on the front of the shirt and for a second year, the Industrial Chemicals Limited logo will be on the sleeve with Cloud on the back and collar.

The Vitality Blast kit has also had a refresh for the 2023 season. Alongside the new crest are shades of deep blue, highlighted by streaks of yellow and red, all underpinned by the silhouette of an eagle perching in the background. Inside the neckline of the shirt, the slogan ‘Fly like an Eagle’ is printed. Whilst the crest has changed, Essex are very much still the Eagles.

Woodland Group continue their sponsorship of the front of the shirt and this year have taken over the sleeve as well with Cloud on the back and collar.

The One Day Cup shirt will keep the same popular pale blue colour and design as last year, with the edition of the new crest and slogan being the only changes to the 2023 kit.

Ambassador Cruise Line will enter their second year as shirt sponsor with their logo placed on the front of the shirt and on the sleeve, with Cloud again taking the back and collar. We are hugely grateful to all of our shirt sponsors for the 2023 season for their support of the Club.

Essex Cricket unveils refreshed identity

Essex Cricket today unveiled a refreshed identity as it looks to harmonise its multiple teams, extensive community work and other commercial activities around a single brand platform.

The new identity retains the iconic seaxes and the distinctive red colour, now housed in a simpler, more contemporary shield supported by a feature representing an eagle in flight. The ‘eagle’ feature visually unites the historic brand features with the Club’s nickname – created originally for the T20 side – for the first time.

The crest will feature on 2023 season kits across all Essex First Teams and will roll out fully over the coming months.

Essex Cricket Chief Executive John Stephenson, said: “I am excited to launch this new identity today. On returning to the Club in 2021 I could see the huge expansion of activities that had taken place since I was here as a player.

“The number of formats and teams, but critically also the expansive community programmes stretching from East London to East Anglia and having a positive impact on so many people. But we had logos for everything which made the club ecosystem quite fragmented and I was keen to drive forward in a unified way under a single brand.”

The work was undertaken by global brand transformation specialists Landor & Fitch who have been responsible for iconic sports brands across the world including the Australian Open, NFL, NY Rangers, Wembley Stadium and the R&A.

Landor & Fitch APAC President Jonathan Cummings comments: “I was thrilled to lead this project having grown up in Essex and played my cricket at Ilford CC and representative Essex Schools teams. More importantly, I was fully aware of the great work that the club does in the community across the region and the impact that has on so many lives.

“The new brand platform and identity reflects everything that is great about Essex Cricket; ambitious, bold and distinctive with a contemporary, digital-first identity that certainly stands proud amongst its peer group.”
