Robin Das set for the BPL with Dhaka Dominators

Robin Das will head to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) later this week after being picked up by the Dhaka Dominators for the 9th edition of the tournament.

British Bangladeshi, Das, will be coached by former Sri Lanka bowler, Chaminda Vaas at the Dominators and play alongside the likes of Sri Lanka’s Chamika Karunaratne and Pakistan’s Shan Masood & Ahmed Shahzad.

The competition, which was last won by Comilla Victorians in 2019 due to COVID, will get underway on Friday (6 January) in Dhaka with Robin’s side beginning their campaign on Saturday when Dhaka Dominators take on Khulna Tigers.

Das, 20, made his T20 debut for the Eagles in September 2020 against Sussex Sharks and has made two further appearances in the format since. This includes the matches against Sussex Sharks and Glamorgan last season, as well as playing in seven of the 8 matches in the 2022 Royal London Cup.

Cook & Critchley called up for England Lions

The England Lions Test and ODI squads have been named for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka with Sam Cook (Test & ODI) and Matt Critchley (ODI) being named.

The red-ball tour will begin with a three-day warm-up match in Colombo on January 25 before two four-day Tests against Sri Lanka A in Galle. The white-ball squad will then play three ODIs against Sri Lanka A in Colombo, with the opening match scheduled for 15 February.

16-PLAYER LIONS TEST SQUAD

Tom Abell (Somerset), Josh Bohannon (Lancashire), Jack Carson (Sussex), Sam Cook (Essex), Matt Fisher (Yorkshire), Nathan Gilchrist (Kent), Tom Haines (Sussex), Haseeb Hameed (Nottinghamshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Jack Haynes (Worcestershire), Lyndon James (Nottinghamshire), Alex Lees (Durham), Liam Patterson-White (Nottinghamshire), Ollie Robinson (Durham), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Worcestershire).

16-PLAYER LIONS ODI SQUAD

Tom Abell (Somerset), Tom Banton (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Jordan Cox (Kent), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Matt Critchley (Essex), Matt Fisher (Yorkshire), Sam Hain (Warwickshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Tom Lammonby (Somerset), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Tom Prest (Hampshire), James Rew (Somerset), Luke Wood (Lancashire).

Four players have been selected into both squads – Tom Abell, Sam Cook, Matt Fisher and Tom Hartley – with a total of 28 players selected across the two formats.

The Test squad includes a strong representation from the England Lions training camp that was in the UAE before Christmas, and includes three Test-capped players – Alex Lees, Hameed Haseeb and Fisher.

The ODI squad provides a return to action for Saqib Mahmood and Brydon Carse after they were both a part of the pace bowler rehab programme during the UAE camp. The squad also includes Jacob Bethell, Tom Prest and James Rew who were a part of the England Under-19s team that reached the 2022 ICC Under-19s World Cup final in Antigua.

Bethell and Rew, who are both currently playing grade cricket in Australia, will join the England Under-19s squad for this month’s two Youth Tests in Australia before joining the Lions ODI squad.

ECB Performance Director, Mo Bobat, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity to expose players to the challenges of playing A-team cricket in the sub-continent, which will be fantastic for their development.

“The series also provides us with the chance to observe the players ahead of this year’s World Cup as well as next winter’s Test series in India.

“The squads have been selected with careful consideration of each player’s individual programme. We’ve worked closely with the counties to understand the players’ best interests as we map their development opportunities. In some cases that includes enabling players to play in domestic franchise cricket.

“The ODI squad takes into account the strength in depth that we have across a number of key roles in our England Men’s white-ball teams and many of the players will join us directly from cricket they’ve been playing elsewhere, in Australia, South Africa or the UAE.

“After a hugely exciting and successful first half of the winter for our Test and Twenty20 teams, I am sure the Lions players will be suitably motivated to make the most of this opportunity.”
The ECB is set to confirm the Head Coach and the captains for each squad before the series, while selection is subject to attainment of England Lions minimum fitness standards.

Shane Snater commits future to the Club

Shane Snater has become the latest player to commit his future to the Club by signing a new two-year contract extension.

Snater, 26, will remain at Essex until at least the 2025 season following a stellar year with both the bat and ball.

The bowling all-rounder enjoyed his best season to date, taking 50 wickets for the Club across all formats and hitting four half-centuries in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Snater was awarded his County Cap in September and concluded the campaign by picking up three accolades at the Club’s End of Season Awards, including the DeVines Men’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

Shane Snater, said: “This season has been great for me on so many levels.

“I’ve worked hard on improving my red-ball game and this has come to fruition over the last couple of seasons. The next three years are going to be exciting for both myself and the Club, and I’m looking forward to the new season.

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “Shane’s new contract is a testament to the hard work he has put in to continually develop his game.

“He has produced a number of match-winning performances this year and the awards he picked up at the end of the season were richly deserved and showed how much he is respected by his fellow teammates.

“Shane has developed into an important player for us and he will only keep on improving over the next three years as an Essex player.”

Alastair Cook: All the Boundaries 2022

On Christmas Day, Alastair Cook celebrated his 38th birthday and has proven again this year that age is just a number after he enjoyed another great season with the bat.

The opener fell just short of 1,000 runs in the LV= Insurance County Championship but finished as the Club’s leading run-scorer in red-ball cricket with 966 runs to his name.

Enjoy all 123 boundaries scored by Chef in 2022 and get prepared to watch him in action again for the 2023 campaign which gets underway in April.

Michael Pepper extends Essex deal

Michael Pepper has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will keep him at The Cloud County Ground until the end of the 2025 season.

The 24-year-old batter came to the fore during last season’s Vitality Blast campaign. He finished as Essex’s leading run-scorer with his 439 runs coming at a strike rate of 163.19, of those to face more than 10 balls only Daniel Sams scored at a faster rate.

After being promoted to the number three spot for Essex’s final game of the 2021 campaign, Pepper quickly settled into his new role. He struck 117 from just 41 balls in a Second XI fixture against Hampshire on the eve of the 2022 competition before going on to record two 50s in Essex’s first five games.

His trademark scoops and sweeps became a familiar sight for Essex fans as his performances at Chelmsford caught the eye. He recorded a T20 career best of 86* from just 49 balls against Somerset at his home ground in June.

Pepper’s form in the 20-over competition earned him a contract with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred and most recently with Chennai Braves in the Abu Dhabi T10 league.

Pepper said: “Last season couldn’t have gone much better for me in short-format cricket.

“It’s quite a new role for me in the T20 side but it’s one I really enjoy, it suits my style of play and I was happy to contribute to some great team performances.

“We made giant strides as a unit last year and the next step for us is to push for that second T20 trophy. We certainly believe that we have the players and plans in place to do so.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath said: “Michael really flourished in the T20 tournament last season. We asked him to perform a more aggressive role and pushed him up the order and he delivered just as we knew he could.

“It’s always exciting to watch a batter with such a vast array of shots, but importantly it makes him incredibly difficult to set a field to as he can access any part of the ground.

“He’s had a taste of franchise cricket as well now and he’s still a young man so I’ll be keen to see how his game develops over the next few seasons.”

Final Chance: Free gift voucher when you purchase a Junior Membership

The best and most afforable way to introduce your young ones to cricket is through an Essex Cricket Junior Membership and with our latest offer it’s even better value.

A Junior Membership is available to those between the ages of 4 and 17 and costs just £29. However, that comes down to as little as £14 during the Early Bird window which closes on 31 January 2023.

Junior Members receive entry to all LV= Insurance County Championship and One Day Cup fixtures and priority access for Vitality Blast fixtures. With five of Essex’s seven home Championship fixtures due to be played across weekends and the whole of the One Day Cup to be played through the Summer Holidays, it’s a fantastic money-saving option.

In addition, those who purchase a Junior Membership between now and 12pm on Friday 23 December will receive a £5 voucher to be spent at the Essex Cricket Club Store or on matchday tickets. £5 in the Club Store will get you anything from a windball, a mini signature bat to a kids white polo shirt and it will even get you half of the way to an Eddie the Eagle soft toy.

Walter & Lawrence heading to ILT20 tournament

Paul Walter and Dan Lawrence will feature in the inaugural 2023 International League T20 (ILT20) competition, which takes place in Abu Dhabi early in the New Year.

Lawrence is coming off the back of the Abu Dhabi T20 with Deccan Gladiators and a stint in Miami for the US Open T20 competition where his Stallions side lifted the trophy. He will continue his jet-setting back in the UAE where he has signed for the Dubai Capitals, alongside his former Eagles teammate Ravi Bopara and Kent’s Fred Klaasen.

Walter will experience overseas franchise T20 cricket for the first time and has been signed by the Sharjah Warriors with Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan, Chris Woakes and Joe Denly.

He is back and fighting fit after a shoulder injury curtailed his season and will head to the UAE in January fresh from signing his new two-year contract extension with Essex.

Another familiar face involved in the competition is Club legend James Foster, Head Coach of the Desert Vipers.

The tournament takes place on 13 January – 12 February with matches staged in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai Capitals will open the competition against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and the Essex pair will first face each other on Saturday 21 January.

Keep an eye on the Club’s social media channels for updates on their progress throughout the competition as we build up to the 2023 county season.

Ben Allison pens contract extension

Ben Allison has signed a contract extension which will see him as an Essex player until at least the end of the 2024 season.

The tall seamer enjoyed his best year in an Essex shirt in 2022, recovering from a side strain to take a maiden professional 5-wicket haul against Northamptonshire during the final LV= Insurance County Championship game of the season.

Despite stiff competition from a strong pace attack, Allison broke into the red-ball starting XI in the latter half of the season and showed he was worth his place by taking 12 wickets at just 13.41 a-piece.

Earlier in the year, he earned a regular spot in the Vitality Blast outfit, featuring in all but two matches and taking 11 wickets.

Allison progressed through the youth ranks at Colchester and East Essex before joining the Essex Academy in 2017 and despite being in and around the First Team squad for several years is still just 23 years old.

Allison said: “It was a great way for me personally to end the season, so to be offered a contract extension is very satisfying.

“It’s a tough bowling attack to break into, but I learn so much from them that I know when I get my chance I’ll be ready and we saw that, particularly at the end of last season.

“The side strain limited my chances in the One Day side last year, but I’m looking forward to hopefully playing in all three formats in 2023.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath said: “The way Ben came back from injury last season was brilliant and he offers us another really useful seam bowling option.

“With his height he offers another angle of attack for us and compliments the rest of the attack nicely.

“Those performances with ball and bat in the final three games of last season was just reward for a lot of hard work and I’m looking forward to seeing how he continues to progress next season.”
