Match Report:

Dan Lawrence and Sam Cook played leading roles as England Lions put a big dent in South Africa’s preparations for their upcoming Test Series against England.

After winning the toss, the South Africans unsurprisingly chose to bat on a flat Canterbury pitch and with a worn, rapid outfield.

Cook took the new ball alongside Ollie Robinson and produced the sort of opening spell that the Essex faithful have become accustomed to seeing in recent times. Despite not picking up any wickets in his opening spell, he was unerringly accurate and went at under 2 runs per over as South Africa’s opening partnership of Sarel Erwee and Dean Elgar couldn’t get him away.

South Africa suffered a collapse either side of Lunch on the first day as Craig Overton used his height to extract some life from the pitch, but Khaya Zondo and Kyle Verreynne led a fight back as they finished the day on 282-6.

Cook was again trusted with the ball at the beginning of Day Two and with England Lions in need of a breakthrough. He duly delivered by nipping one back to smack into the top of off stump as Zondo, on 86, offered no stroke.

The South African tail wagged as England’s spinners were targeted, however, their final score of 433 was soon to be overshadowed when it came to England’s turn with the bat in hand.

Lawrence’s naturally attacking strokemaking was to the fore as the Lions did a more than passable impression of ‘Bazball’ in piling on 672 in the first innings at a remarkable rate of 5.74 runs per over.

Coming in at number three, a problem spot for the national team in recent years, Lawrence hit a run-a-ball 97 which included 17 fours. He had the highest strike rate of any batter to score more than 50 runs and took England from 50-1 to 223-2 in just under 32 overs.

His innings set the tone for the Lions and eye-catching centuries from Harry Brook (140) and Ben Duckett (145) put the South African bowlers to the sword.

None of the bowlers were safe and a few selection headaches face the South African coaches ahead of the first test after seamer Marco Jansen finished with 1/111 from his 25 overs and spinner Keshav Maharaj coped the worst treatment, taking 1/169 in 22 overs.

Clearly worn by their time in the field, the South Africans offered little resistance in their second innings and folded for 183 to hand England Lions the victory by an innings and 56 runs.

After impressing in the first innings, Cook was given the new ball in the second and was unlucky not to add to his first-innings wicket as he got through 20 overs, more than any other England bowler.

Young Derbyshire seamer Sam Connors did the majority of the damage, taking 4/25 but there was one final moment of joy for the Essex pair, who combined for the wicket of Zondo. This time Lawrence was the bowler and Cook the catcher as Zondo top-edged a reverse sweep.

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Glamorgan

Essex Eagles v Glamorgan

Royal London Cup
The Cloud County Ground
Sunday 14 August
11am start

After a series of impressive performances from Essex’s up-and-coming players, the senior contingent rose to the occasion on Thursday as the Eagles hammered their local rivals at Chelmsford.

Tom Westley’s century laid the foundations for a big first innings total before Shane Snater combined a brilliant performance in the field with career-best List A figures of 5/29 to subject Kent Spitfires to a 182-run defeat.

These two sides last met in the Semi-Final of last year’s competition and Sunday’s fixture will be another crucial encounter as the Eagles look to gain momentum in the Royal London Cup group stages.

Squad:

One change has been made to the squad for tomorrow’s game with new Overseas signing Raymond Toole coming in for the injured Jamie Porter.

The Opposition:

Glamorgan clinched their first piece of silverware for 17 years when they won last year’s edition of the Royal London Cup.

After a strong group stage showing saw them finish top of Group 2, they beat Essex in the Semi-Finals before easing past Durham in the final.

The hero of the 2021 Final was captain Kiran Carlson, who scored 82 from 59 balls to guide Glamorgan to a winning total, and he has been seeing the ball well this season, scoring 154 runs at an average of 38.5. Leading run-scorer Colin Ingram has picked up 194 runs at 48.25, but Glamorgan will be hoping for the form of Sam Northeast to improve, the batter has only made one score of more than 10 in the opening four games.

Jamie McIlroy has led the way with the ball for the Welsh County with five wickets. However, his participation is in doubt after picking up a hamstring injury against Yorkshire Vikings and missing Friday’s game against Northamptonshire.

Also in doubt is Chris Cooke who has only managed one game in this year’s competition after failing a fitness test, while Tim van der Gugten is absent due to his participation in the Hundred.

Last time out:

The last meeting between Essex and Glamorgan in List A cricket came at Sophia Gardens in last year’s Royal London Cup Semi-Final.

After being inserted into bat, Alastair Cook and Josh Rymell got the Eagles off to the perfect start with an opening partnership of 111 before Steven Reingold picked up Cook for 68.

Despite Essex’s top five all getting in, no one was able to go on and get the big score as a steady flow of wickets saw them fall from 225-3 to 289 all out.

In Glamorgan’s response, a punchy 67 from Hamish Rutherford set them on track and contributions from Nick Selman (59) and Kiran Carlson (36) took them to 156-2.

However, a small collapse triggered by two wickets for Tom Westley saw them slip to 182-5 before an assured partnership between Tom Cullen and Joe Cooke guided Glamorgan over the line.

The two sides have played 66 times in List A cricket, with Essex winning 35 times and Glamorgan 21. There have been nine no results and one incredible tied match in 1994.

In that fixture, an Essex side packed full of familiar names faced Glamorgan at Southchuch Park in Southend. Graham Gooch, opening the batting with John Stephenson, scored 101 and contributions from Nick Knight and Nasser Hussain at numbers three and four helped Essex to 214-7 in their 40 overs.

In response, Glamorgan got off to a solid start thanks to Hugh Morris and Phillip Cottey, but Michael Kasprowicz, Peter Such and John Stephenson picked up two wickets each to pin Glamorgan back.

Despite some resistance from Ottis Gibson, Glamorgan continued to limp towards the line before, incredibly, two late run outs saw the game end in a tie as Steve Barwick was run out from the final ball of the innings with the scores level.

Raymond Toole signs for remainder of Royal London Cup campaign

Essex Eagles have added Overseas bowler Raymond Toole to the squad for the remainder of the Royal London Cup.

The 24-year-old, who represents Central Districts in his native New Zealand, has been playing Premier League cricket for Belhus Cricket Club in Grays.

The left-arm seamer progressed through the New Zealand pathway system, representing both Manawatu and Central Districts. His impressive form for the pathway teams led to a first-class debut for Central Districts in October 2019, whilst his List A debut came the following month.

At the end of the 2021 season, Toole was the 5th highest wicket-taker in the Plunkett Shield, with 22 wickets at an average of 26.86 and best figures of 4/38.

In his career to date, he’s taken 53 first-class wickets at an average of 27.43, whilst also taking 7 wickets in the 10 List A games he’s played.

Toole has gained a reputation as a left-armer than can swing the ball both ways, whilst also being comfortable both opening the bowling and being given the responsibility of the death overs in white-ball cricket.

Upon signing for Essex Eagles, Toole said: “It’s been a busy few days getting everything sorted but I’m so pleased to be given the opportunity to represent Essex in 50-over cricket.

“I’ve been training with the team at Chelmsford for a few weeks so I’m familiar with the lads and they’ve been really welcoming to me.

“With 4 games left in the competition, I’ll be hoping to hit the ground running so we can finish the Royal London Cup campaign strongly, and if we do that, you never know what could happen.”

Injury News: Jamie Porter and Ben Allison

Jamie Porter picked up a groin strain in Thursday’s Royal London Cup fixture against Kent Spitfires and will miss tomorrow’s game against Glamorgan before being assessed ahead of next Wednesday’s clash with Yorkshire Vikings.

Meanwhile, Ben Allison is continuing his recovery from a side strain with the next step being a club conference fixture early next week.

Shane Snater

Match Report:

Tom Westley scored the sixth one-day century of his career before Shane Snater put in a stellar performance in the field to steer Essex to their first Royal London Cup win of the season.

The Essex captain laid the foundations for a 182-run demolition of Kent in the latest Battle of the Bridge with a third-wicket partnership of 184 in 30 overs with Grant Roelofsen. Westley contributed 109 from 101 balls, while Roelofsen chipped in with a 79-ball 77, continuing an impressive start to his Essex career.

However, that Essex were able to set a target of 332 was largely thanks to a late burst of 41 from 22 deliveries by Shane Snater. Kent’s 20-year-old seamer Joey Evison took some stick but finished with career-best figures of 3-62.

Ben Compton anchored the Kent reply, but without injecting any urgency or pace into his innings of 52 from 82 balls as wickets fell all around him. Snater finally removed Compton to take five wickets in 14 balls and return List A-best figures of 5-29.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Westley and Roelofsen joined forces after Essex lost the wickets of Josh Rymell and Feroze Khushi

Westley then accelerated through his eighties, the handbrake off, with three fours in an over from Nathan Gilchrist that ultimately cost 19 runs. A characteristic flick off his legs for his 13th four took Westley to a 96-ball century.

Roelofsen’s innings came to an end after 79 balls when a fast Navdeep Saini delivery sent his middle-stump cartwheeling. Westley followed almost immediately when he scooped Joe Denly to Evison on the fence at long-on.

That wicket-taking combination was reversed with Denly taking a spectacular diving catch at mid-on off Evison to account for Aaron Beard. Four balls later Aron Nijjar, like Westley, picked out Evison on the rope to hand Qadri a wicket.

With Essex in danger of not being able to capitalise on a good start, it needed some lower-order hitting from Snater to push Essex towards a sizeable total.

Saini lost his radar with two balls above waist height to Robin Das that forced him out of the attack mid-over, the second of which was picked up for six over square leg.

More drama was to come in the 10-ball over, which was completed by Matt Quinn, whehn Das found Finch on the midwicket boundary to end a 49-run partnership inside four overs with Snater.

In response, Kent were never really in the chase. They lost Tawanda Muyeye in the sixth over trying to play Jamie Porter to leg but falling to Robin Das at point. Ollie Robinson attacked from the start, hitting two sixes in his 31 before he flicked Porter to deep extra cover where Shane Snater took a spectacular one-handed catch. Khushi then took a stunning catch above his head to remove Denly off the bowling of Aaron Beard.

Kent’s fourth wicket went when Alex Blake flicked Jamal Richards into Beard’s hands on the square-leg boundary. Harry Finch managed just a dozen from 28 balls before he chipped Snater to mid-on.

Evison followed going for an optimistic second run to Snater in the deep and Roelofsen, behind the stumps, completed the run-out.

All the time Compton was accumulating, but at no great pace. His fifty took 76 balls – Westley’s had taken 44, Roelofsen 52 – and included just two fours. But as soon as he had raised his bat, he started to run out of partners as Snater claimed three wickets in an over before completing the rout by removing Compton.
