Essex Seniors Mid-Season Report

Competing in the Overs 60 & Over 70 section of national competitions, Essex Cricket have 6 teams with four being for people above the age of 60 and two for people aged above 70.

As the half way points in the season rolls around, all teams have either completed six or seven games. The over 60s 1st XI is currently the high-flyers in their group having won all 7 of their games so far this season. While the other three 60+ teams all sit mid-table.

Top runscorer Kevin Grant has been the highlight of the season so far for the 1st XI as he has currently amassed 455 runs in his 7 innings, with high score of 161 therefore averaging 75.

However, in the Over 70s, both teams are continuing to endeavour with the 1st XI sitting mid-table, after 3 wins, and the 2nd XI having a difficult run with just one win.

Both teams will be looking forward to trying to move up the table after having multiple injuries in recent weeks, with there being hope that the returning players can give the two teams a boost as they push on into the second half of the season.

Although one player who has been in fine form is 78-year-old John Stuck. Averaging 115, John has scored three consecutive centuries with his last being a high-score of 142 not out.

Finally, Essex Cricket would like to give a big thank you to the 16 clubs who are currently hosting home games to allow senior games to be played.

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Somerset

Essex Eagles v Somerset

Vitality Blast
The Cloud County Ground
Sunday 19 June, 2:30pm start

The Eagles have named an unchanged squad to face Somerset after a Friday night that will go down in Blast history.

Daniel Sams produced a heroic performance, first with bat and then with the ball to secure victory for the Eagles in the highest-scoring T20 match in English domestic history.

The win inches the Eagles one step closer to a place in the quarter-finals but with more work still to do to be assured of making the knockout stages.

Squad:

ESSVSOM SQUAD

Opposition:

Somerset, like Sussex Sharks who the Eagles faced on Friday, have been consistent performers in T20 cricket and this year is no different.

They began the campaign with three successive victories and after a blip against Sussex, resumed winning ways with wins over Glamorgan and Gloucestershire.

They are now sat 2nd in the South Group table with 12 points and 6 wins from 8 games.

Rilee Rossouw has lead the way for Somerset with the bat, and indeed is one of the leading runscorers in this year’s Vitality Blast. His 352 runs have come at a blistering strike rate of 184.29 and he is averaging 58.66.

Despite Somerset’s strong batting, they have been less consistent with the ball with only Lewis Gregory and Roelof van de Merwe going at less than 8 runs per over. Josh Davey has taken the most wickets with 12, however he missed Somerset’s last game through concussion, as did Craig Overton.

Head to Head:

Head to head copy

Last time out:

The Eagles last faced Somerset early in the campaign when they journeyed to Taunton two days after their opening game victory over Kent.

Somerset won the toss and chose to field, a decision influenced by a patchy forecast and the chance of a shortened chase.

The weather did indeed intervene and interrupted the flow of Essex’s innings. Despite a brilliant 60 from Matt Critchley and 37 from Michael Pepper, a first contribution from him at his new position of number 3, the Eagles suffered two mini collapses and finished on 139 from their reduced 18-over innings.

Essex started well by taking the wicket of Tom Banton cheaply, however Smeed and Rossouw settled in and both scored half-centuries as Somerset picked off the run chase in 14.4 Overs. Simon Harmer was the pick of the Essex bowlers taking 2-22 off his 4 overs.

Essex Eagles v Sussex Sharks

Vitality Blast
The Cloud County Ground
Friday 17 June, 7pm start

Essex Eagles will be looking to follow up on another commanding victory at home as they take on Sussex Sharks at Chelmsford this Friday.

Last week, the Eagles extended their winning record at home to three games as another impressive home performance saw them comfortably beat Middlesex by 61 runs.

Feroze Khushi starred with the bat in his second T20 outing of the season. His 67 from 40 balls and Paul Walter’s swashbuckling 58 underpinned an above-par total of 186-6 for the Eagles.

In response, Middlesex’s chase never really threatened with Sam Cook and Matt Critchley taking three wickets apiece and Middlesex eventually being bowled out for 125.

Squad:

ESSVSUSS SQUAD

Opposition:

Sussex Sharks are always there or thereabouts when it comes to T20 cricket and last year was no different. After finishing third in the South Group Table, they made it as far as Finals Day before being knocked out by Kent in the Semi-Final.

However, their start to this year’s tournament has been hit and miss. After losing their first two games by a decent margin, they bounced back with a pair of victories over last year’s finalists Kent and Somerset and followed that up with a win over Middlesex.

However, since then they have lost three on the trot, including a horrible collapse of 8 for 23 to lose last time out against Gloucestershire.

Despite overseas talent in the form of Josh Philippe, Tim Seifert and Mohammad Rizwan, it’s Tom Aslop who leads the run-scoring charts with 223 runs at an average of 55.75 and an impressive strike rate of 168.93.

Obed McCoy was signed by the Sharks to cover for Rashid Khan while he is unavailable and has made a big impact. His 14 wickets have come at an average of 12 and an impressive strike rate of a wicket every 8.3 deliveries.

Last time out:

The Eagles last played Sussex Sharks in Hove during the latter half of the 2021 Vitality Blast group stages.

Sussex won the toss and elected to field, a choice that was vindicated as they restricted Essex to 146. Tom Westley returned to the top of the order after a six-game hiatus and top-scored with 53 runs. Michael Pepper gave him some support with 38 off 26 balls, however, a collapse from 121-4 to 146-9 left the Eagles short.

Essex got off to the dream start as Luke Wright was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over of the innings, Aron Nijjar claiming another victim in the first over of the innings. A constant stream of wickets in the first half of the Sussex innings left them 67-4 at the halfway stage and the game in the balance, but half-centuries from Delray Rawlins and Ravi Bopara led the Sharks to a successful chase.

Despite a good day out for Essex’s spinners Nijjar and Harmer, who took 3/34 in 8 overs between them, Sussex Sharks completed the victory with 9 balls to spare.

How to Watch:

There will be a Live Stream of the match from The Cloud County Ground available. You can watch the game via the Essex Cricket TV YouTube channel or the Essex Cricket Matchzone, which also includes a live scorecard, statistics and key clips of the action.

Access via the Essex Cricket Matchzone is available here.

Tickets:

Tickets for tomorrow night’s game have now sold out, however there is still a chance to see some cricket this weekend when the Eagles take on Somerset on Sunday 19 June.

First Team Injury Update: Daniel Sams & Dan Lawrence

After a week’s break in the fixture schedule, the Eagles head into another busy period of matches with four Vitality Blast games over an eight-day period.

Sussex Sharks are the visitors to The Cloud County Ground on Friday evening and the return of Daniel Sams will boost Simon Harmer’s team selection.

The Australian missed the fixtures against Hampshire Hawks and Middlesex due to illness but is back in contention after his return to training this week ahead of the home matches at Chelmsford on Friday and Sunday.

Dan Lawrence is continuing his rehabilitation after sustaining a hamstring injury against Lancashire in May and is working towards a return to the matchday squad before the Vitality Blast group stage fixtures conclude in early July.

Shane Snater called up by the Netherlands for England ODIs

The Dutchman has been selected in the Netherlands 18-man squad to play England, with the first game being played on Friday 17 June.

The tour, consisting of three ODI matches played on 17, 19 and 22 June, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and the ECB website and app.

Snater’s last outing as a Netherlands player came in a T20 World Cup Qualifier against Bermuda in 2019, but he last featured for the ODI side in 2018.

Since then, Snater’s performances with the ball have turned heads at Essex and he has become a First Team regular in both red ball and 50-over cricket.

Despite injury limiting him to six appearances in last year’s Royal London Cup, he was Essex Eagles third-highest wicket-taker with his 13 wickets coming at 21.69 apiece.

Snater’s call-up to the national squad will not affect his availability for Essex’s LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Hampshire, starting on June 26 at Chelmsford.

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, said: “Shane greatly deserves national recognition for his performances in Essex colours over the past couple of seasons.

“He works so hard on his game, so it’s fantastic to see him being rewarded for his improvement.”

Match Highlights:

Match Reaction:

Feroze Khushi talks after play to dsicuss his magnificent 67 off 40 balls.

Match Report:

Feroze Khushi brought his Second XI form to the Essex Eagles as he blazed a first Vitality Blast half-century to help his side to a 61-run victory over Middlesex.

Batter Khushi averaged 91 in the Second XI T20 competition with three scores over 70 and continued that run with a stylish 67 at The Cloud County Ground.

Paul Walter also clocked up 58 as the Eagles set 187, before Matt Critchley took his Blast tally to 12 scalps with three for 22 and Sam Cook returned a magnificent three for 18; Middlesex bowled out for 125 to extend their losing run to five defeats.

Khushi was exceptional in his ball-striking and also benefitted from being given three helping hands. John Simpson shelled a simple catch before he had got off the mark before he was also dropped on 36 and 40. In fact, Middlesex’s general fielding display will have disappointed head coach Richard Johnson, with Michael Pepper also surviving a chance.

Khushi eased into his work, with Adam Rossington, Pepper and Critchley all departing in the powerplay having been put in, but found boundaries thanks to his strong wrist work. Having reached a 33-ball fifty, he unleashed a pair of sixes into the nearby houses – one of which landed on a roof.

Two balls later though he holed out to the deep midwicket boundary, to end a 69-run stand with Walter. That came in a three-over spell which saw Essex score 45 runs, a key to their large total. Walter kept things moving, bringing up his second T20 half-century in 31 balls, with partnerships of 38 and 27 with Tom Westley and Simon Harmer.

Martin Andersson picked up three for 42, including a wicked yorker to bowl Westley, as Essex piled up 186-6.

Cook bowled Steve Eskinazi to the fourth ball of the reply, before Max Holden followed an over later when Ben Allison found his outside edge.

Joe Cracknell and John Simpson smashed five sixes between them but still couldn’t match the required run rate. Both departed attempting to up the ante, Simpson miscuing to extra cover and Cracknell bowled trying to sweep Critchley.

Luke Hollman and Jack Davies both reached the 20s before they both departed, the former attacked Westley before Critchley had Davies lbw and Chris Green stumped.

The home victory was confirmed when Cook returned to find Tom Helm edging to short third man and Andersson picked out a sprawling Harmer at long on and Thilan Walallawita was run out.
