Recreational Season Update – Friday 17 July

A message from Dan Feist, Head of Cricket Operations, Essex Cricket

Once again last weekend and this week has shown what the Spirit of Cricket really stands for, with clubs and leagues supporting each other to get the game back on, I am sure you will all agree the site of Cricket being back playing in the county was enough to put a smile on anyone face. I hope at some point over the last week you have all taken time to reflect on what you have all achieved to help the game get to this point. Having said that we are now really at the beginning of the opportunity as we look to be creative and flexible in our ways of delivering Cricket to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with this great game.

Please remember to make the most of the ECB support and information that is available especially around the funding, Natwest Cricket force and resources to help you set up your ground for games and training. On top of this please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the team if you have a question or need further assistance.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend,

Dan

ID Verification
Face-to-face ID document verification can now take place as long as the verifier and those requiring their ID to be verified observe all Government guidelines.

Above all, you must be able to operate consistently within Government guidance regarding health, social distancing and hygiene. This guidance currently includes that all users can maintain a safe “one metre plus”, where 2m social distancing is not possible, that good hygiene practices are in place, that equipment is disinfected regularly, and that it is clear that anyone who is symptomatic or suspects they have been exposed to the virus does not take part and remains at home.

Club Welfare Officers who feel it’s not appropriate for them to complete the verification process at this time should contact Phil Knappett.

At this time, it also means that video identification will be suspended as we need to meet strict audit requirements for this process. The only exception would be that the verification process would be counterproductive to Government Guidelines when will look to provide further support on a case by case basis.

Full details will be published on www.essexcricket.org.uk/community next week.

YOUTH COMPETITIONS

County Competitions

At this week’s Youth Participation Group meeting it was agreed that the Brian Taylor, Matchplay and U19 competitions will run to a revised format running from the first week of August to the middle of September. Clubs have been put into local groups for the initial stages before progressing to knockout stages. We like to wish all the teams competing for all the best in these historic competitions.

Mini Matchplay
At the same meeting it was agreed that the Mini Matchplay this year will be run on the same day (Date TBC) but hosted at multiple grounds around the county due to the County Ground not being available, more information about this will be released in the next couple of weeks.

Coach Education

This week the ECB have given the go ahead for the return of Coaching Courses.

The programme is to be fed back in stages starting with the Assessment process for Candidates who have submitted their folders and are ready to complete their coaching journey.

Once the full guidance from The UK Government on indoor facilities and their use the second stage is to complete those Certificate in Coaching Course (Level 2) that were underway before COVID-19 hit.

It is hoped that the Foundation 1 courses will be back by the Autumn however at this time no fixed timeline has been confirmed.

ECB take up Essex Cricket, Alternative Cricket tea scheme for the West Indies test

Together in this Test
Second Test: 16 July

During the second Test, with the help of cricket clubs and local community groups, we will be raising awareness of, and helping tackle, food poverty in the UK through a Cricket Tea-A-Thon campaign in partnership with the Trussell Trust, a leading food poverty charity in the UK.

We will be hosting a virtual cricket tea event at ‘tea’ on day two of the second Test to get clubs, volunteers and families across the country sharing their own cricket teas on social media and encouraging them to donate products to clubs that have signed up as collection points.

• What do clubs need to do?
Clubs have the opportunity to register as Trussell Trust food collection points for food banks and we would love for as many to get involved as possible. All they need to do is sign up here.

During the match itself, we hope that clubs will encourage their members to host their own cricket teas, share pictures and videos across social media using the #CricketTea and encourage members of the cricket family to donate food to their local cricket club collection point.

• When will more details be shared and what do clubs need to do?
More information can be found here. We encourage clubs to sign up to be food collection points which they can do by registering here.

If you have questions please contact the ECB by emailing here.

Club Statement: Zampa & Henriques

Essex County Cricket Club can today confirm the termination of Adam Zampa’s and Moises Henriques’ contracts for this year’s Vitality Blast campaign by mutual consent.

Zampa was due at The Cloudfm County Ground for his third stint with the Eagles, having played an important role in the side’s success last year, whilst Henriques had signed up for his first spell with Simon Harmer’s side.

Derek Bowden, Chief Executive at Essex Cricket, said: “The last few months have been extremely difficult and whilst we prepare for a shortened domestic season, there are still uncertainties and restrictions which means this is the most sensible decision going forward.

“It’s a shame as Adam is a fan favourite at Chelmsford and a popular member of the dressing room, whilst we also feel that we had recruited well by bringing in Moises. However, but we still believe we have a squad that is more than capable of defending the title.

“I would like to thank Adam, Moises and their representative teams for their understanding of the current situation and the impact it’s having on the game.”

Essex’s Overseas signings are in partnership with Seven Investment Management, the Eagles’ Vitality Blast shirt sponsor.

Trevor Griffin Named As New Sunrisers Head Coach

Following yesterday’s launch of the Sunrisers brand, the London and East Regional Women’s hub who will compete in the new Women’s Elite Domestic Structure, today saw announced that Trevor Griffin has been appointed as Head Coach.

Griffin, who has now begun his new role with the Sunrisers, comes with a wealth of experience in the Women’s game, having previously guided Western Storm to two Kia Super League titles, and having worked with both the England Women’s team and the England Women’s Academy. Griffin will also continue to work in Australia as Head Coach of the Sydney Thunder Women’s Big Bash franchise. Griffin was also due to lead the London Spirit franchise in this year’s Women’s Hundred tournament prior to its cancellation as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

On being announced as The Sunrisers new Head Coach, Griffin said:

“I’m delighted to have been asked to take up the fantastic role of Sunrisers Head Coach in this brand new era for Women’s cricket. There are a lot of talented players within the region & I’m really looking forward to working with Danni & the linked counties to develop them into a strong Sunrisers squad, achieve their ambitions & ultimately see some of them progress onto the England pathway.”

Speaking of The Sunrisers’ appointment of Griffin as Head Coach, Regional Director of Women’s Cricket, Danni Warren, commented:

“I have known Trevor for a while, through mutual players, and having worked with him over the last 6 months linking with London Spirit. Every time I worked with Trevor it became obvious that a more skilled and passionate candidate would be hard to find. Trevor’s knowledge of the women’s game, both here in England and internationally, is immense and something I cannot wait to be able to tap in to.

“Trevor and I share a vision to develop the talent in our region, whilst embedding sustainable pathways that will allow players to thrive. Women’s cricket has a wonderful opportunity to really grow and Trevor is a key component in the workforce I am looking to develop for the Sunrisers. I am so pleased to be welcoming Trevor on board and to be able to work closely with him.”

Nick Browne Gearing Up For 2020 Campaign

No one was more relieved than Essex opener Nick Browne when the ECB announced that the delayed 2020 season would include a mix of red and white-ball cricket.

One of the alternative plans for the mini-season that begins on August 1 was for solely one-day matches, and Browne’s more patient approach has not been seen in the 50-over format for three years or in the helter-skelter of T20 since 2016.

He admits: “Yes, I was relieved. I really thought they were just going to do T20s and 50 overs. I thought on the financial side it probably made sense. But obviously I love four-day cricket, I love playing it, so I’m happy.

“But I would have tried to play both [white-ball] formats. You’ve got to try and adapt, haven’t you, to get some kind of cricket in. Now I’ve got these five [red-ball] games to play and then I’ll try and get into the T20 team!

“There might be an opportunity this year, you never know. If Dan Lawrence is still away with England; we don’t know if Cameron Delport will make it over from South Africa, and we’ve obviously lost Ravi, so that’s three batting spots available!”

The 29-year-old left-hander, back in training for the past fortnight, has not visited the middle since Essex clinched the Specsavers County Championship title at Taunton last September. “It’s the longest since I was probably 15 that I haven’t picked up a bat,” he says.

“It felt a bit strange putting the gear on when we went back, but once you’ve faced a couple of balls you’re back into it. It’s amazing how quickly you pick it up again, how quickly your eyes pick up the ball and your feet move to it.

“Mind you, it takes me a bit longer than some of the more talented boys, I must say. Someone like Adam Wheater, Dan Lawrence or Tom Westley can just walk into a net and hit everything out of the middle straight away.”

Essex were midway through their pre-season training camp in Abu Dhabi when the coronavirus pandemic struck, with Browne saying: “To have put so much work in and then it doesn’t happen, that’s the frustrating bit.”

“You’ve trained really hard on your fitness for three or four months after Christmas and you’re good to go. Also, for us, we’d just won the title, we were on a roll and wanted to make hay while the sun’s shining, keep winning competitions. We felt like we could have won it again this year. But, yeah, it’s one of those things. The boys are really excited to get going.”

With a maximum of a dozen red-ball innings available, Browne has had to readjust his season’s target. He said: “Over the years my goal has always been to score 1,000 runs. It’ll be tough to do that this year! Obviously, you want to score hundreds and maybe something in the 300-400 range would be nice.

“What we’ve done quite well at Chelmsford the last few years is, because they’ve been results wickets, us batters have tried to pride ourselves on out-scoring the opposition and not looking too much at your own average. It’s more about what the average was for the game, if that makes sense.

“Anthony McGrath [the Head Coach] has done really well with instilling that into us. Rather than worrying, ‘Oh, I’m only averaging 20 at home’, try and see that you’re doing well compared to the average of the other top six or the opposition top six. It’s a better way of looking at it and puts a positive spin on things. I think if I can look at an average above 40 then I’d probably take that.”

London & East Regional Women’s Hub Unveiled

Today saw the unveiling of the new identity of the London and East regional Women’s hub, who will compete in the new Women’s Elite Domestic Structure as the Sunrisers.

As one of eight regional hubs competing in the new Women’s Elite Domestic Structure, the Sunrisers, covers the region of the three first-class counties of Middlesex, Essex and Northamptonshire, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and the national counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire.

The new structure, which was unveiled in October 2019, forms part of the ECB’s ten-point action plan for Transforming Women’s and Girls’ Cricket. The Sunrisers Senior team who compete in the ECB Women’s Elite Domestic Competition, are a team featuring the best players from across the region and country. In addition the Sunrisers structure will deliver a performance programme at Academy and Emerging Player level, aimed at developing the breadth of talent across the region.

Just a fortnight ago, Amara Carr, Naomi Dattani and Cordelia Griffith were unveiled as the three players from the region to have been awarded retained professional contracts this year with the Sunrisers, with news of a high-profile appointment to the role of Head Coach expected imminently.

Carr, Dattani and Griffith are three of twenty-five newly retained professional Women’s players who will represent the eight regional hubs – a figure which will ultimately be increased to forty.

The Sunrisers’ three retained professionals were at The Cloudfm County Ground this week, one of the grounds they will use as a home venue, where they posed for pictures in the team’s new training equipment.

Speaking of the launch of new the Sunrisers brand, Regional Director of Women’s Cricket, Danni Warren, commented:

“Today’s unveiling is the culmination of a period of consultation across the entire region and pathway. It was key for us to embody those who we represent, and I am so grateful to all of those who have assisted in bringing this to life.

“We have a visual that we can be proud of and seeing our players and coaching staff wearing the Sunrisers logo for the first time was an immensely proud moment.

“I cannot wait to see the Sunrisers continue to come to life, on and off the pitch, and look forward to working with all our stakeholders and partners over the coming months and years.”

Essex To Play Kent In Two-Day Friendly

Essex will travel to Canterbury to play Kent in a two-day behind-closed-doors warm-up match prior to the beginning of the 2020 domestic season.

The match is scheduled for 27-28 July and is expected to consist of a bowling day and a batting day per team, with both sides looking for match practice ahead of the Bob Willis Trophy fixtures.

Essex Cricket Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, said: “All the lads are looking forward the season starting and getting back out on the field again.

“We’ve been training for a few weeks now and the players are looking good, and this friendly against Kent will give the guys a chance to play in matchday scenarios against a tough opposition.

“It will be strange playing with no fans, especially as we’re lucky at Essex to have some of the best and most dedicated supporters in the country.

“It doesn’t matter if we’re playing at Chelmsford, up at Headingley or down at Taunton, you know the Essex fans will travel in big numbers to back the team. That support helped us get over the line on plenty of occasions last season, so we’re certainly going to miss them.”

All 18 First-Class Counties To Compete In 2020 Season

All 18 First-Class Counties have agreed to participate in the same competitive red-ball and white-ball competitions during this summer’s shortened men’s domestic season.

The season will commence with a four-day competition which will enable all 18 First-Class Counties to compete for the Bob Willis Trophy. This will be followed by a shortened Vitality Blast competition starting on 27 August.

ECB Managing Director of County Cricket, Neil Snowball, said: “The enforced break due to COVID-19 has provided a challenging period for the county game during which time the 18 First-Class Counties have been united with a common goal to get back to our core function of playing cricket.

“The commitment of the Chairs and Chief Executives of the First-Class Counties to work together to achieve that ambition has been resolute and we will remain in close discussion as we continue to assess risk factors that need to be mitigated in order to ensure the safety and welfare of their players, coaches and staff.

“We are all delighted that agreement has been reached across the game and we are now in a position to look forward to and prepare for a new men’s domestic season starting on August 1.”
