Essex Cricket Make Wickets For Wildlife Donation

Towards the end of 2019 and during the start of 2020, Australia experienced its worst fires on record and the suffering continues on a mass scale, affecting both humans and animals in unprecedented numbers.

Essex Overseas stars Peter Siddle and Adam Zampa, along with Kane Richardson, set up Wickets for Wildlife with the aim of raising 50,000 AUD (Australian dollar) to help WIRES Animal Wildlife Organisation, Wildlife Victoria and those without a voice suffering due to the fires.

The three players donated 200 AUD for every wicket they individually took throughout the Big Bash campaign and asked for support from anyone who could afford to help.

Essex players Alastair Cook, Ryan ten Doeschate, Tom Westley, Nick Browne and Sam Cook, along with Peter Siddle, donated their matchworn shirts from the 2019 season, giving fans and supporters the chance to own a piece of cricketing history.

There was plenty of interest and once the shirts had all sold to the highest bidders, the group had raised a total of £2,077.68, which is equivalent to just over 4,000 AUD.

On the donation, Peter Siddle said: “I’m so grateful to my Essex Cricket family for pulling together and donating to a cause that is close to my heart.

“It goes to show that everyone at the Club works together both on and off the pitch, and I know everyone at WIRES Animal Wildlife Organisation and Wildlife Victoria are grateful for the support.

“Hopefully we can get to our target of 50,000 AUD. Any more donations would be hugely appreciated, and I can assure you that your help and support really does make a difference.”

After donating the money raised to the Wickets for Wildlife campaign, Siddle, Zampa and Richardson’s total stands at just over 37,000 AUD, a monumental effort.

The Wickets for Wildlife campaign is still taking donations, and if you want to donate to this great cause, you can do so by visiting

Getting To Know Moises Henriques

Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques has joined Essex Eagles for this year’s Vitality Blast campaign, but how much do you know about our new signing?

Moises was born in Funchal, the same part of Madeira that footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is from, and he and his family moved to Australia when he was just one.

He graduated from Endeavour Sports High School in 2004 and was the recipient of the first Rexona Australian Youth Cricket Scholarship, an initiative backed by former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.

Later that year Henriques was selected for the Australian U19 squad for the 2004 U19 Cricket World Cup, where he took 11 wickets at 19.27 and averaged 19 with the bat.

In early 2006 Henriques made his List A debut for New South Wales against Victoria, and in doing so became the youngest ever List A debutant for the Club.

He was named Captain of the Australia U19 team for the 2006 U19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka, where he was one of the standout players of the tournament. He averaged 27.50 with the bat and finishing at the competition’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 16 wickets at 10.52.

Later that year he made his first-class debut for New South Wales against South Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A week later he really burst onto the scene by taking 5/17 against Queensland, and by doing so he became the youngest-ever New South Wales cricketer to take a 5-wicket haul in a first-class innings. New South Wales went on to win the Sheffield Shield the following season, which was Henriques’ maiden first-class title in professional cricket.

In early 2009 he tasted his first T20 success, with his New South Wales Blue team defeating Victoria in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash Final at Sydney. Off the back of his performances, he was signed by Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders for $300,000, and averaged 19 with the bat in his first IPL campaign.

After consistent and strong performances, Henriques made his full international debut in 2009, in a T20 match against New Zealand in Sydney, but he was run out for just 1. Later that year Henriques was called up for Australia’s tour of India and scored 12 runs on his ODI debut at Delhi, however he got injured later on in the tour and had to return to Australia.

In 2010 he was traded by Kolkata Knight Riders to Delhi Daredevils in exchange for Manoj Tiwary and in late 2012, he recorded his maiden first-class century, scoring 161 not out from 229 balls for New South Wales against Tasmania at Bankstown.

He experienced further T20 success in 2012, as his Sydney Sixers beat Perth Scorchers by 7 wickets to claim the very first rebranded Big Bash League title. Henriques was named Man of the Match for his performance, which saw him score 70 runs from 41 balls, and he was announced as the Club’s new Captain for the following season.

In 2013, the all-rounder was selected for Australia’s Test squad for the first time for their tour of India. On Test debut, he made his maiden half-century with 68 runs in the first innings and backed it up with 81 not out in the second. This also made him just the second person from Portugal to play a Test match, following in the footsteps of South Africa’s Portuguese-born Dick Westcott.

In 2013 he returned to the Indian Premier League but with Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was a successful tournament for the all-rounder, as he averaged 41.25 with the bat and took 7 wickets at 26.42.

He enjoyed more red-ball success with New South Wales in 2014, with the side reclaiming the Sheffield Shield title for the first time since 2008. The side followed this up by securing Marsh One-Day Cup titles in both 2015 and 2016.

His performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the previous IPL campaign saw Henriques move to Sunrisers Hyderabad where he’d stay for four IPL campaigns. Over this period, he scored a total of 755 runs at an average of 27.96, with his highest score of 74 not out from 46 balls coming against Delhi Daredevils in 2015. He also took 28 wickets at 32.75 apiece during his stint with Sunrisers and was part of the side that claimed the IPL title in 2016.

In the following years, Henriques was in and out of the Australia T20, ODI and Test squads, but recorded his best T20I score against India in 2017, scoring 62 not out from 46 balls.

In January 2020, Henriques skippered Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash title after claiming a 19-run victory over Melbourne Stars.

Australian International Henriques Joins Eagles For Vitality Blast

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that Australian all-rounder, Moises Henriques, has signed for the duration of the 2020 Vitality Blast campaign.

The 33-year-old will link up with the squad towards the end of May and will be available for any knockout games and Finals Day, should the Eagles progress that far in the competition.

Henriques has played 11 ODIs and 11 T20 internationals for Australia, and has represented franchises all around the world, such as Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash and Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

The all-rounder spent time in England with Glamorgan in 2012 and more recently with Surrey from 2015 to 2017. He averaged exactly 34 for Surrey in T20 cricket, whilst his overall T20 average is 26.58.

Henriques adds a wealth of experience and leadership to Anthony McGrath’s team. He’s the Vice-Captain of New South Wales and has been Captain of Sydney Sixers since 2013, recently skippering the side to their second Big Bash title.

Head Coach McGrath is thrilled to add Henriques to the ranks and said: “I’ve been following Moises’ career for a while now and I think he’s exactly what we need going into this year’s Blast campaign.

“He’s been excellent in the IPL and was instrumental for Sydney Sixers in their recent Big Bash success. His runs got them over the line on plenty of occasions and it’s clear he’s an excellent leader too, so I have no doubt he’ll be a great fit in our dressing room.”

Moises is equally pleased to be heading back to England and said: “I’m delighted to be joining Essex Eagles for the Vitality Blast.

“The opportunity to join the reigning Champions and the challenge of defending the title is something I’m really excited about.”

Eagles fans can secure their seats to watch Moises in action for all 7 games at Chelmsford by purchasing a Season Ticket either online, in person or via phone. To purchase your Season ticket online click here.

Match tickets are already on sale to Members but the opening public ticket priority begins on Monday 02 March for e-news subscribers. Simply sign up to Essex Cricket’s ‘Over & Out!’ e-news for free and you will be able to purchase individual match tickets online before they go on General Sale to the public from Saturday 14 March. Sam Cook Called Up To England Lions

Essex seamer Sam Cook has been called up to the England Lions squad for their final two four-day matches on their tour of Australia.

The 22-year-old was in fine form for Essex last season and took 32 Championship wickets as Anthony McGrath’s side reclaimed the Division One title.

The Chelmsford-born bowler has been playing grade cricket in Melbourne for Prahan Cricket Club and has been called up as cover for the Lions, who have lost some players to injury ahead of the match against Australia A at the MCG, which starts on Saturday.

On his selection, Cook said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be called up to the England Lions.

“I found out a couple of days ago and I’m really excited to join up with the squad and get to work.

“I’m pleased that Dan [Lawrence] is out there as it’s always nice to see a familiar face amongst a crowd. I also went to Loughborough University with James Bracey, so I’m sure they’ll both help me settle in for what should be a good few weeks.”

England Lions fixtures:

Saturday 22 – Tuesday 25 February: Australia A vs England Lions
Sunday 01 – Wednesday 04 March: New South Wales XI v England Lions

Lawrence Named Man of the Match in Lions Draw

England Lions had to settle for a draw against Cricket Australia XI in a high-scoring encounter at the Blundstone Arena, Hobart.

Resuming 144 runs behind the Lions’ first innings total of 613, Jack Edwards and Mitchell Perry took their ninth-wicket partnership to 89 to halve the deficit.

Perry finally became a rare scalp for the part-time off-breaks of Dom Sibley, caught by Craig Overton for 28, and the Lions wrapped up the innings two overs later.

Man of the Match Dan Lawrence took his third wicket of the innings, to add to his 190 runs from England’s first innings, removing Edwards for 192 to end the CA XI innings on 546 – 67 behind the Lions’ total.

With the game hurtling towards a draw, the Lions batsman enjoyed 31 overs of time in the middle before the captains shook hands. Sibley fell early, unable to follow up on his first-innings century, with Zak Crawley and Keaton Jennings adding exactly 50 for the second wicket.
Sam Northeast, batting at four, hit an unbeaten 46 from 57 balls with Tom Abell not out on six when the draw was agreed.

The Lions’ next match is a day/night encounter against Australia A at the MCG, starting on Saturday.

Richard Dawson said: “There were a lot of positives to come out of the match in all phases of the game. It was tough for the bowlers on the pitch, but our bowlers stuck to their task during the last couple of days, especially with a couple of injuries.”

“The batting was an obvious highlight and it was pleasing to see three centurions in the first innings, with Dan Lawrence’s ability to push on on day two really putting us in a good position.

“We’ll face another tough match at the MCG against Australia A later this week, but it’s a great opportunity for the lads to experience a different challenge playing under lights. Our preparation over the past two weeks has been very good and we will be continuing this leading into the game.”
