Essex Success at the Business of Cricket Awards

Following the triumphant 2019 season on the field of play, the Club has now had one more reason to celebrate a memorable year after picking up the ‘Most Improved Matchday Experience’ award at the ECB’s annual Business of Cricket Awards.

The awards took place at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday evening and are hosted by the ECB each year to celebrate “good practice, sustained improvement, and innovative ideas help to create positive experiences for new and existing fans alike” across all 18 first-class counties and the MCC.

The ‘Most Improved Matchday Experience’ accolade is awarded to the Club who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the customer experience across the season with feedback gathered through customer surveys and assessments. The category focuses on aspects of a matchday, such as food & drink, stewarding, retail, atmosphere and all parts of the customer journey, and members of the Commercial team were in Southampton to pick up the award.

Other improvements include new and improved toilets which are being installed at the County Corner area of the ground, plus further enhancements to the matchday food & drink offering.

The Club were also commended on the night after being one of 3 nominees in the ‘Community Engagement Impact’ category. This submission focused on the successful Club to County campaign across the Club and Community teams, and well done to Somerset who were the winners of the award on the night.

Lawrence Stars In England Lions Victory

Dan Lawrence put in an all-round performance to help England Lions beat Cricket Australia XI at Metricon Stadium to seal the three-match series with a game to spare.

Lawrence took 4 wickets, including 3 in 4 balls, as Cricket Australia XI were bowled out for 179.

Henry Brookes, on Lions debut, dismissed the dangerous Max Bryant for 10 in the third over, with Marcus Harris adding 31 with opener Caleb Jewell before the wickets started tumbling.

Lawrence had Jewell caught behind with the second ball of the 11th over, with Jake Lehmann falling the same way next ball. Brad Hope survived the hat-trick ball only to succumb LBW the very next, leaving the hosts 46-4.

Durham seamer Brydon Carse then struck twice in the 15th over and Lawrence’s fourth left CA XI 76-7.

Xavier Crone’s 66 off 88 balls helped his side to a respectable total, with Carse finishing with 3-17 from 8 overs.

Lawrence then got to business with the bat, and scored a quickfire 35 which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. His innings left England needing 46 runs, which they managed to achieve with 54 balls to spare.

Lawrence said: “It’s great to get another win under our belts in what were quite challenging conditions, with the threat of bad weather meaning we were up against it in our run chase.

“I’m pleased to be able to contribute again with bat and ball. Those first 20 overs with the ball really put us in a good place, and while they came back in the later overs the target was still very manageable.

“These first two wins give us good confidence going into the rest of the one-day series, showing we can perform in all phases of the game and adapting to suit the match situation.”

England Lions play their final match against Cricket Australia XI at Metricon on Thursday before travelling to Sydney for two matches against a NSW XI.

Siddle Named In BBL Team Of The Tournament

Essex’s Overseas star Peter Siddle has been named in the BBL Team Of The Tournament.

The 35-year-old has been in lethal form for Adelaide Strikers throughout the competition, and his performances have been recognised with a place in the Team Of The Tournament, which is chosen by the Head Coaches of all the competing sides.

Siddle claimed a personal-best 17 wickets through the regular season, and added another 2 to his tally during Saturday’s defeat to Sydney Thunder to join Rashid Khan as the Strikers leading wicket-takers with 19.

He’s received plenty of recognition for his death bowling throughout the campaign, and with an economy of just 7.35, he stacks up strongly when compared to other seamers in the competition.

The BBL 19/20 Team of the Tournament:

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars)
Josh Inglis (Wicket-keeper, Perth Scorchers)
Matthew Wade (Hobart Hurricanes)
Glenn Maxwell (Captain, Melbourne Stars)

Mitchell Marsh (Perth Scorchers)
Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers)

Alastair Cook Appointed To MCC’s World Cricket Committee

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced last week that Alastair Cook and Ricky Skerritt have been appointed to their World Cricket committee.

The committee, which is made up of current and former international cricketers, meets twice a year to discuss the most important issues in the game and acts as an independent voice in world cricket.

35-year-old Cook retired from international cricket in 2018, having made his Test debut back in 2006 against India. He went on to captain the side and holds a number of English records; he is England’s most-capped player and is the leading run-scorer in Test matches for England, having notched up 12,472 runs in his 161 matches.

Cook recently helped Essex to a second Championship title in three seasons, and was the Club’s leading run-scorer in the 2019 campaign.

Former West Indies bowler and current broadcaster Ian Bishop, and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan have stood down from the committee.

Mike Gatting, Chairman of the MCC World Cricket committee, said: “I am thrilled that Sir Alastair and Ricky have both accepted our invitation to join the MCC World Cricket committee.

“Alastair has enjoyed a wonderful career with England over a number of years and with him still playing domestically, he can give insight from a current players’ perspective, as well using his undisputable international experience.

“We have been keen for some time to appoint a new representative from the West Indies and I am delighted that Ricky will be joining us. His knowledge of the game from a West Indian perspective will be invaluable, and his work outside of the sport will also be advantageous to the committee.”

The next MCC World Cricket committee meeting is due to take place in Sri Lanka in March, timed to coincide with England’s two ICC World Test Championship matches, as well as the MCC County Champion Match, in which Alastair Cook will be involved in for Essex, which takes place between 24th and 27th March at the Galle International Stadium.

Jamie Porter Heads Back To School

Following on from our Club to County videos last year, Essex star Jamie Porter went back to where it all began for him on Monday.

The Essex bowler visited his old stomping grounds, Gilbert Colvin Primary School and Oaks Park High School, both in Ilford, to speak with the students about working hard in school and his journey so far.

The 26-year-old also took part in some cricket activities and gave the students bowling tips, engaged in a fascinating Q & A session and encouraged the pupils to follow their dreams.

On his trip down memory lane, Porter said: “It’s a real privilege for me to be able to come back to my old schools and speak to the current students about my education and my career to date.

“I loved my time at Gilbert Colvin Primary School and Oaks Park High School, they’re some of the first places I started playing cricket, so it’s great to get the chance to come back and see the places that helped shape my career.

“Hopefully I’ve helped inspire some of the existing students, and if one pupil decides to pick up a cricket bat after speaking to me and start playing, then it’s been a successful visit in my opinion.”

Mr Wood, a teacher at Oaks Park High School added: “It’s fantastic to have Jamie down here today.

“As a former pupil, it’s really inspirational for the kids here today to see what a student from Oaks Park High School can go on to achieve.”
