Tom Westley Appointed Club Captain

Essex County Cricket Club can today confirm that Tom Westley has been appointed Club Captain.

The 30-year-old is an Essex Academy graduate and will captain the side across the County Championship and Royal London Cup, with Simon Harmer continuing to skipper the Essex Eagles in the Vitality Blast.

The top-order batsman has made 152 first-class, 80 List A and 74 T20 appearances for the Club since making his debut in 2006 and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Keith Fletcher, Graham Gooch and Nasser Hussain in becoming a homegrown Essex Club Captain.

On his appointment, Westley said: “It’s a real honour for me to be named Club Captain and it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to.

“I’ve been with the Club since I was 13 and I can’t really put into words how much this means to me. I’ve spent my whole career with Essex so it’s a really proud moment for me and my family.

“Ryan has done an outstanding job and deserves every bit of praise he gets. He’s been a fantastic Captain, a close friend and an excellent leader who I’ve learnt a lot from.

“We’ve been so successful as a Club under his guidance, and my main goal as Captain is to continue the great work he’s done, carry on winning games of cricket and ultimately bring more trophies to this great Club.”

Tom Westley Takes The Reins (Part One):

Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath added: “As well as being an excellent cricketer, Tom is also a natural leader both in the dressing room and out on the field.

“He’s been Vice-Captain for a number of years and when he’s been asked to step up in Ryan’s absence, he’s always demonstrated his strong leadership qualities and has shown how important he is to this side.

“He’s come through the Essex Academy and has all the attributes to be a successful Captain. Going forward, he’ll have the likes of Ryan [ten Doeschate], Alastair [Cook] and Simon [Harmer] to lean on if needed and we’re all looking forward to seeing how things progress under his captaincy.”

Ryan ten Doeschate Steps Down As Club Captain

Essex County Cricket Club can today confirm that Ryan ten Doeschate has stood down as Club Captain after four seasons leading the team.

During his tenure, Essex have risen to the top of red-ball cricket and won three titles in four campaigns. He has captained the side for 58 first-class matches during this period, winning on 33 occasions and suffering defeat just eight times.

The 39-year-old took on the role prior to the 2016 season and immediately led the Club back to Division One after claiming the Division Two title at the first attempt.

The side then went unbeaten throughout their first season back in the top-tier of English cricket, winning 10 of 14 games and claiming a first Championship title in 25 years.

In 2019, Essex once again tasted success in four-day cricket, with ten Doeschate skippering the Club to an eighth Championship title following a ‘winner takes all’ match with Somerset in Taunton.

On ten Doeschate’s decision to step down, Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath said: “Ryan has been a phenomenal Club Captain and as Head Coach, I couldn’t have asked for any more from him.

“His commitment and dedication to the Club is second to none, and if you look at the position Essex were in before he took over and compare it to where they are now, a lot of that rise is down to Ryan.

“Now is the right time for someone else to take the reins and lead the team. It’s important to remember that Ryan isn’t stepping away from Essex, he’s still very much part of this Club and I’m sure he will continue to have a positive presence both on and off the field.”

Chairman of Essex Cricket John Faragher added: “During his time as Club Captain Ryan has shown outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills, both of which have been a major factor in the Club’s success over the last four years.

“To win Division Two and then two Championship titles in four years is a remarkable achievement and he steps down with the Club in a strong position for further success.

“He is a great ambassador for the game of cricket and especially for Essex County Cricket Club.”

Ryan has written an open letter regarding his decision to step down as Club Captain, which you can read by clicking here.

Four New Domestic Players Join The London Spirit Women’s Team

Middlesex’s one-day Captain, Naomi Dattani, leads the list of four players that London Spirit have today announced as their first domestic signings for The Hundred.

Dattani will team up with England Captain Heather Knight, Freya Davies, Tammy Beaumont and Deandra Dotton, as well as Hampshire’s Charlie Dean and Surrey pair Aylish Cranstone and Hannah Jones.

Knight said: “I think we’ve brought in some really good players. All of them have done well across the Kia Super League and that’s a good test of someone’s talent.

“Aylish and Naomi both offer something different with their left-arm and Charlie is a good, young bowler who I’ve seen little bits of during her time in the England pathway.

“Hannah’s obviously got some experience of captaining Surrey, which is a bonus, and I think when you combine our domestic players with our international ones you can begin to see the London Spirit squad taking shape, and that’s exciting.”

Rymell Signs Rookie Contract

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that Josh Rymell has signed a rookie contract with the Club running until the end of the 2020 season.

The 18-year-old made his first appearance for the Club’s age-group sides in 2015 and featured 19 times for the Second XI in 2019. He averaged 26.56 with the bat and his highest score of 87 came against Durham in a 50-over match at Chelmsford.

Rymell will continue to go through his rehabilitation programme over the next few months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury last August, and he is set to join the First Team in Abu Dhabi for the pre-season tour in March.

On signing his contract, Rymell said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to sign my first contract with Essex.

“It really means a lot to me and my family and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and learning from some of the best around.

“Hopefully this is the start of a long and successful journey for me with the Club.”

Essex Cricket Supporting Wickets For Wildlife

Australia has recently experienced its worst fires on record and the suffering continues on a mass scale, affecting both humans and animals in unprecedented numbers.

Essex Overseas stars Peter Siddle and Adam Zampa, along with Kane Richardson, set up Wickets For Wildlife with the aim of raising $50,000 to help WIRES Animal Wildlife Organisation, Wildlife Victoria and those without a voice suffering due to the fires.

Siddle, Zampa and Richardson are donating $200 for every wicket they individually take throughout the whole of the Big Bash League, and we want to support them.

A host of Essex players are set to auction off their match worn playing shirts from the 2019 season, so you really do have the chance to own a piece of history all whilst supporting a great cause.

Alastair Cook, Ryan ten Doeschate, Tom Westley, Sam Cook, Nick Browne and Peter Siddle have all broken records this season, with Essex becoming the first Club to ever compete a T20 and Championship double.

You can now bid on one of the the shirts that Chef batted in down at Taunton in that nail-biting Championship decider, or the shirt that Tom Westley hit a century in at Edgbaston.

If you’d like a personalised message on the shirt from the player, that can also be arranged.

You can browse the shirts currently up for auction by clicking here.

All the money raised from these auctions will be going directly to Wickets For Wildlife, which will in turn go directly to WIRES Animal Wildlife Organisation and Wildlife Victoria.
