Bopara commits future to the County Champions

Essex County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that all-rounder Ravi Bopara has signed a one-year contract extension with the County Champions.

Bopara has committed his future to his home County until the conclusion of the 2018 season.

The 32-year-old has appeared in 161 first-class, 140 List A and 131 T20 matches in his 16 years as a professional with the Club so far, and will look to play an integral part in Essex’s title defence next year.

Commenting on his contract extension, Bopara said: “I am very happy to sign for another year and had no hesitations at all. I have been with the Club since I was 11 years old and have loved every minute of it.

“The 2017 season was incredibly special and I believe we are in a good place to build on our Division One title. Hopefully we can continue to win trophies in the coming years and I believe personally I can continue to play a big part in that.”

Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath is thrilled to see the all-rounder sign for a further year and added: “Ravi is still an integral part of what we are trying to achieve as a Club moving forward.

“He is an Essex man and is an excellent person to have around the dressing room with his years of cricketing experience around the world.

“He also made contributions across all formats last year with both bat and ball, and we hope he can continue to do that moving forward into 2018.”

Lawrence Captains Lions to T20 victory

Dan Lawrence captained England Lions to a convincing nine-wicket win against a Western Australia XI in the first of four T20 fixtures that will complete their four-week training camp.

Worcestershire’s Joe Clarke relished the chance to open with Ben Duckett, smashing an unbeaten 92 from 51 balls as the Lions cruised past a WA total of 156 for five with nine wickets and seven balls to spare at the Murdoch University ground.

Clarke hit 13 fours and three sixes, and received good support from Duckett’s 38 off 39 balls, and then from Essex’s Dan Lawrence, who ended with 28 not out from 23 in his first captain’s innings for the Lions – having been appointed to lead the team for the first time.

The foundations of the win were laid by an excellent bowling and fielding performance.

Jack Leach, one of six Lions players who will play for an England XI in their two-day match against a Cricket Australia XI this weekend, bowled the first over – and both he and his fellow Somerset spinner Dom Bess impressed, with Bess conceding only 15 from three overs.

There were three wickets for new Nottinghamshire signing Paul Coughlin, continuing his good form in Perth, and Lancashire’s Saqib Mahmood claimed the important wicket of WA wicketkeeper Calum How.

“We were a bit rusty in the 50-over game we played against WA the other day, but today was a much better performance,” said Lions and England batting coach Graham Thorpe.

“I thought we bowled very well, recognising the need to take pace off the ball, and delivering to the right place.

“Then Clarkey came out and timed the ball really well. He’s opened for Worcestershire in T20 cricket and it’s good to be able to give the guys the chance to play where they do for their counties. And it was good to see him there at the end – that’s something we try to drill into the lads.

“Dan Lawrence was probably a bit surprised to be asked to captain, but Andy Flower likes to share it around – and I thought he did really well. As with Liam Livingstone the other day, it’s good that the guys want to do it when they’re given the chance, and Dan showed good decisiveness out in the field.

“Then he came in and took us home with Clarkey – he’s played well out here, and I think he’ll have got a lot out of the trip.”

The Lions’ remaining T20 matches will all be against the Perth Scorchers, as Justin Langer’s squad prepare for the Big Bash – the first two at the new 55,000-capacity Perth Stadium.

“It’s going to be interesting having a look at the new stadium, because I’m back out here with England for the one-day series after Christmas and we play Australia there,” added Thorpe.

“The Scorchers will be good opposition, as the Western Australia lads have been for the last two days to be fair. All the boys are looking forward to it.”

Westley ruled out for 12 weeks after finger surgery

Essex batsman Tom Westley has had successful surgery in Leeds on the finger injury he sustained fielding for England Lions in their three-day match against a Queensland Select in Brisbane last week.

The Essex batsman will be out for around 12 weeks, ruling him out of contention for the Lions’ tour of West Indies in early 2018.

The squad for that tour will be announced later this month.

The Lions are now in Perth for the second part of their training camp, focusing on white-ball skills and based at the Western Australia Cricket Association’s facilities at Murdoch University.

They play a 50-over match against a WA selection on Wednesday (December 6) followed by a T20 game the following day, with both those games at Murdoch.

Then they play three T20 matches which are part of Perth Scorchers’ preparations for the Big Bash on December 11, 13 and 15 – the first two of which will be the first cricket fixtures played at the new 55,000-capacity Perth Stadium, where the senior England team are due to play an ODI next January.

India to head to Chelmsford in July 2018!

Number One Test team, India, will travel to The Cloudfm County Ground in 2018 for their only warm-up match ahead of their Test series against England.

The contest, kindly sponsored by PS Administration, will be played across four days, starting on Wednesday 25 July and concluding on Saturday 28 July.

India will play a five-match series against England following the match, with fixtures at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Ageas Bowl and The Kia Oval, but have chosen Chelmsford as the place to prepare for the series.

Two of the top 10 best ranked batsman in Test cricket, Virat Kholi and Cheteshwar Pujara, will look to spend some valuable time in the middle adjusting to English conditions, while Mohammad Shami, Ravi Ashwin and Ravi Jadeja will look to get overs under the belt.

The fixture will provide the perfect respite for Essex during a hectic T20 Blast schedule, and will allow the players to refocus ahead of crucial Championship matches against Somerset and Hampshire a couple of weeks later.

Large crowds will be expected at Chelmsford and non-members can purchase tickets for this match in the New Year but all supporters can purchase hospitality now!

Full 2018 Fixture list released!

Essex’s full 2018 fixture list was announced today, with the County Champions starting the season against Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley in April.

Head Coach Anthony McGrath will take his side back to his old stomping ground to kick off proceedings, before travelling back to Chelmsford for an opening home Championship match against Lancashire.

The visit of the Red Rose will be the first time Essex have returned home since the trophy parade in September, and a big crowd is expected to greet the County Champions on Friday 20 April.

The Eagles will return to One-Day Cup action with a visit to Radlett to take on Middlesex on 17 May, with Essex looking to go one further than 2017’s semi-final appearance.

The opening One-Day Cup fixture will be followed by trips to Gloucestershire and Hampshire, before three home games against Somerset, Surrey and Glamorgan.

Play-off dates will take place in June, should Essex progress, with the final once again being held at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, on 30 June.

Essex Eagles’ T20 Blast campaign begins with a home fixture against Sussex Sharks at Fortress Chelmsford, followed by the visit of Middlesex just two days later for the first of the Friday Nights, Under Lights.

There will be brief interludes in the Blast for Championship fixtures, and in particular for the visit of Number One Test team India, for a four-day fixture beginning on 25 July.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravi Ashwin will all travel to Chelmsford as India prepare for their Test series against England.

The Blast will be concluded with a trip to Canterbury to take on Battle of the Bridge rivals, Kent Spitfires, and Essex will hope to be in contention for a quarter-final place, and potential Finals Day on Saturday 15 September.

Ryan ten Doeschate’s team conclude the Championship season at Chelmsford with a visit from newly-promoted Worcestershire.

Essex’s title defence will then be finished at the Kia Oval, with the squad hoping to lift that gold trophy, once again in front of the travelling Essex supporters.

Westley to return from Australia after suffering finger injury

Essex batsman Tom Westley will fly home from Brisbane tomorrow (Wednesday) for scans and a probable finger operation, after suffering an injury in the field in the Lions’ game against a Queensland Select XI.

Westley had been due to bat at number three, but an initial diagnosis on the middle finger of his left hand ruled him out of playing any further part on the Lions training camp, which continues for a fortnight in Perth with a focus on white-ball skills.

“Given what we suspect about the injury, we think it’s important to get Tom back to a specialist in Leeds as soon as possible to have a further scan and then for any surgery that’s necessary,” explained Ben Langley, the ECB’s lead physiotherapist.

Paul Coughlin, Nottinghamshire’s recent signing from Durham who limped out of the game with a hip problem sustained fielding on the first day, has responded well to treatment, and there are no plans for him to return home early at this stage.

Westley & Lawrence set for Lions opener

Tom Westley and Dan Lawrence are set to feature for the England Lions this week in a three-day match against a Queensland XII in Brisbane, which begins on Monday.

The pair flew out to Australia a couple of weeks ago and have been in training with the Ashes squad. This week’s match will be the first competitive action the team have faced, under the stewardship of Lions Head Coach, Andy Flower.

Flower said: “We’re playing a 12-a-side match as they do in the Futures League which is Australia’s main Second XI competition. We’d normally be keener on playing 11-a-side and a first-class fixture, but in this instance it will afford us the opportunity to play an extra quick bowler – and also to face an extra quick bowler from Queensland, which we expect to mean Ben Cutting being included in their team as he returns after injury.”

Flower will come up against a former Essex team-mate, as the Queensland team will be coached by former favourite, Andy Bichel.
