Essex CCC name new President and Treasurer

Essex County Cricket Club is delighted to announce David Acfield as the Club’s new President, taking over the role from the late Doug Insole CBE.

Acfield has been actively involved with the Club for over 50 years, with his playing career at Essex spanning from 1966-86, in which he made over 400 First Class appearances.

During that time, he took 950 wickets and was a member of the team which won four County Championships in the late 70s and early 80s.

Furthermore, he has been Deputy Chairman, Chairman and Treasurer of the Club, as well as chairing the Essex County Cricket Board for its first 18 years.

The 70-year-old paid tribute to his predecessor upon hearing the news and said: “It will not be easy stepping into Doug’s shoes, but he was a great personal friend and mentor.

“Since most of my roles in cricket came about as a result of his recommendations, I think he would have approved the Committee’s choice of his successor!

“I will do my best to fulfil my duties as he would have wanted, and continue to help take this Club forward.”

Acfield has also been Chairman of the TCCB Cricket Committee which later became the ECB Committee, and also served on the MCC Cricket & Finance Committees and the ICC Cricket & Development Committees.

He has chaired many working groups across all aspects of the game, including the panel which introduced 20-over cricket to the County programme, and ultimately World cricket.

Essex County Cricket Club Chairman, John Faragher, believes Acfield is fully deserving of the honour and added: “David is the ideal person to step into the role of President.

“He brings a wide range of skills to the position, gained from his time as a player, and administrator within the game, having held senior positions within the TCCB and more recently the ECB.

“As a previous Club Chairman and Treasurer, he will be an invaluable asset as the Club continues on its journey of continuous improvement.”

Subsequently, Committee Member Ian Patterson will step into the role of Club Treasurer.

Ian was elected on to the Committee as a Co-opted Member in 2016 and has a background in financial services, having worked in investment banking for over 30 years.

He has extensive experience in all aspects of the Financial Services industry through a number roles at Deutsche Bank, which culminated in his role as Global Chief Operating Officer.

Ian brings a wealth of knowledge in finance, planning, strategy, technology & infrastructure, governance & control and regulatory affairs which will be a great asset to the Club.

Chairman, John Faragher, was equally pleased to see Patterson become Treasurer and added: “We are pleased that Ian has agreed to take on the role of Club Treasurer.

“His extensive knowledge of financial services will help to ensure that the financial security and stability of Essex Cricket continues to be in place to support our ongoing business plans.”

Flashback | Alastair Cook in Oz

Cometh the hour, cometh the man…

The 2017/18 Ashes Series is all set, so we thought we would take look back at Alastair Cook’s past series’ in Australia, which has seen the rise the greatest English batsman of all time since he featured for the first time in 2006.

Cook heads into the series on the back of a Championship winning season at Essex and supporters were treated to a number of fine innings, trademark shots and the familiar sight of the Gray Nicolls being raised to the Pavilion. His shining innnings this year came against Middlesex when a record first wicket partnership (373 runs) with Nick Browne, which included a personal innings of 193 that helped Essex to a memorable of key win in the season.

This was Alastair’s first County Championship win of his career. However, he has been accustomed to lifting the Urn on four occasions; the first coming in 2009. This will be the seventh series he has featured in and the first time in three series he won’t be captaining the side – he is one of 3 England players to have skippered an Ashes side on three occasions.

2006/07 Series

The Australian’s were well aware of Alastair Cook’s ability after his innings of 214 for Essex against them at Chelmsford in 2005. He made his Ashes bow in 2006 and a hostile Australian crowd awaited for the 21 year old batsman.

The opening match against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane was only his 10th Test match for England. The series itself wasn’t a memorable one as England slumped to a 5-0 defeat, but Cook did hit his 4th Test century during the third match at the WACA, Perth. The 116 he scored was the only innings over 50 but he had now announced himself on the Ashes scene.

2010/11 Series

After securing the Ashes in 2009 on home soil, England headed to Australia in 2010/11 looking to retain the Urn for the first time since 1986. This proved to be Alastair Cook’s greatest series in an England shirt as he racked up 766 runs across the five matches, ending as the highest run scorer and Man of the Series. The most memorable match was the opening Test in Brisbane as he and Jonathan Trott scored a partnership of 329 runs. Cook’s innings of 235 broke Don Bradmans’s highest Test score record at the Gabba.

Cook’s series went from strength-to-strength, scoring a further two centuries to help lead England to a 3-1 Ashes victory. This was the first time England had won the Ashes since the 1986/87 series and continued the winning streak into the 2013 series; Cook’s first Ashes as Captain.

2013/14 Series

The 2013/14 series saw England defeated in the Ashes for the first time since 2006/07, as Mitchell Johnson caused havoc for the Australians and Alastair Cook’s men lost the series 5-0. Cook struggled with his form throughout the five matches, managing just 246 runs and wasn’t able to reach three figures.

Now for 2017/18 – we wish Alastair Cook and England the best of luck in Australia!

Cook excited for opening Ashes Test

Essex and England batsman Alastair Cook is excited and ready for the opening Ashes Test in Brisbane on Thursday.

England head into the series having played three warm-up matches in Perth, Adelaide and Townsville and Cook has had a timely return to form.

Cook started the tour with a second ball duck, but scored a fluent 70 in the draw against a Cricket Australia XI in Townsville, and feels he is hitting form at the right time.

The 32-year-old said: “It was an important innings in Townsville. Obviously, the tour hadn’t started off exactly as I would have liked but it was nice to get some runs under the belt and find a bit of fluidity.

“In an ideal world you will spend lots of time in the middle, but if you score a lot of runs in warm up games that doesn’t always translate to matches.

“I feel my movements and rhythm are good, so I am in a good place going into the First Test and excited for what is ahead.”

The left-hander believes although England’s preparation has gone under the radar, the team will be ready for Australia on Thursday at the Gabba.

He added: “The guys are ready. It has been quite a low key build up for us but we are looking forward to getting going on Thursday. We have spent a lot of time talking and there has been a lot of hard work but we will be ready for the challenge Australia throw at us.

“I am still enjoying the challenge of playing for England. It doesn’t get any easier once you have played 140 games because you are playing against the best players in the world but we are all excited for the series and can’t wait to get going on Thursday now.”
