Chris Clarke-Irons to join England for Australia ODI tour

Essex Head of Athlete Development, Chris Clarke-Irons, will join the England medical team for the ODI series against Australia.

The Essex Lead Physiotherapist will fly out to Australia on 2 January with former Essex Head Coach, Chris Silverwood.

Clarke-Irons has previously worked on the ECB Pace Programme and will work alongside the ECB Team Physiotherapist for the duration of the ODI series.

Clarke-Irons is excited to be joining up with England and said: “This a great opportunity to broaden my horizons and work alongside the England backroom staff.

“I am very fortunate to have the chance to be involved with the ODI squad around the closing stages of the Ashes Tour and then travel around Australia for the duration of the ODI series.

“The experience will only continue to benefit Essex as I will be able to bring back new ideas and methods to the squad upon my return and implement them in the teams pre-season training.

“It is further recognition of the good work we are doing at Essex and it will be nice to link back up with Chris again and work with him and all the coaching staff.”

Essex County Cricket Board receive new grant from EASST

The Essex and Southend Sports Trust in 2017 continued and enhanced its support for cricket across the County, with a grant of £31,000.

The cheque was presented to Essex Cricket CEO, Derek Bowden, on behalf of Essex County Cricket Board, during the Surrey T20 Blast Game. The trust is a long-term supporter of the development and opportunities that sport can provide to the community of Essex.

This work is specifically focused on the sustainability of Garon Park for the use of Essex Development programmes and the support for the Women and Girls game in the County. The increase in their annual grant this year though, has also seen EASST support the development of the new junior talent identification programme and help Essex Cricket in putting cricket back into schools by supporting over 30 primary schools across the region.

Key highlights in 2017, following the support from EASST, has seen the Essex Women’s team promoted to Division Two of the County Championship, along with the Under 15 girls reaching the finals weekend and hosting a development festival at Felsted School.

The wider impact of the programme has also been seen with Essex seeing a further increase in girls trialling and taking part in local clubs, along with over 350 women and 50 teams taking part in Women soft ball festivals throughout the County.

Through the support of EASST this year, we have also been able to host high profile events at Garon Park throughout 2017. In July and August Essex hosted Holland and the USA as they prepared for their respective Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers.

In June, Garon Park hosted Holland and Denmark as Essex looked to build up its links with Europe, to support the development of the game.

Peter Butler, EASST, said: “We are proud of our continued relationship with Essex Cricket and were delighted to pass over a cheque for £31,000 to the Essex County Cricket Board.

“The Essex Cricket pathway continues to go from strength to strength and helping the Club develop a new junior talent identification programme and increase participation in schools has been very rewarding and shows the value of our support and our partnership.”

Derek Bowden, Essex Cricket CEO, commented: “Garon Park has played host to a number of Second XI, Women’s and Academy matches over the past few years and continues to provide a place for future Essex cricketers to ply their trade.

“EASST’s ongoing and generous support, allows the Club to continue its excellent work, and helps develop the Essex Cricket pathway across the region.”

Cooky back with a bang for England

Alastair Cook scored an epic double century to put England in command of the fourth Ashes Test with a lead of 164 runs after day three at the MCG.

Cook ended the day 244 not out with England 491/1 to become the sixth highest run scorer in Test history.

The former captain had completed his century late on day two but batted through the third day, spending a total of more than 10-and-a-half hours at the crease in his innings.

The emotion of last night will live with me for a long time. Today was about putting that emotion to one side and getting a really big score for the team. We’ve got to get the ball reverse swinging then we’ve got to be relentless in and around off stump and set ourselves up for 90 overs of hard work.

England captain Joe Root reached his half-century early in the first session but was dismissed for 61 when he top edged an attempted pull off Pat Cummins straight down Nathan Lyon’s throat at deep square leg.

It brought Dawid Malan to the crease and the new batsman made 14 before he was out lbw to Josh Hazlewood. Replays showed a thick inside edge before the ball slammed into the pad, but Malan decided against a review.

Cook continued to effortlessly accumulate runs as he approached 150 and England went in at lunch with the score 264/4.

Jonny Bairstow nicked behind to Tim Paine off Lyon for 22 just after lunch before Moeen Ali made a frantic 20 that came to an end when he smashed high to Shaun Marsh at short cover off Lyon.

Cook serenely batted on – supported by Chris Woakes – and moved on to his 11th Test score of more than 150, the most of any England player in history.

England started the last session on 360/6 and lost Woakes early for 26 when he gloved a short ball from Cummins to Paine.

Stuart Broad came to the crease and was peppered with short balls, but counter-attacked aggressively to help take England’s lead to three figures, passing fifty himself in the process.

But Broad himself knew he was the support act for Cook, who fittingly reached his double hundred with a perfect straight drive for four.

Roared on by England’s support, Cook became the highest ever run scorer against Australia at the MCG.

Broad was eventually dismissed for 56 when Usman Khawaja collected a high catch, with the umpires signalling it was taken cleanly despite the ball spilling out of his hands.

Lawrence and Porter named in Lions squad for West Indies tour

Essex bowler Jamie Porter and batsman Dan Lawrence have been included in the England Lions squad that will play three four-day matches against West Indies A in Jamaica and Antigua early next year.

Porter has also been selected in a 15-man squad for a three-match one-day series against West Indies A which follows in Antigua, along with three more players who were not involved with the Lions in Australia – Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson, Kent batsman Sam Northeast and Lancashire leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson, who is currently in Sydney on an ECB Overseas Placement.

Keaton Jennings will captain the Lions in both the four-day and one-day series.

Two fast bowlers, Worcestershire’s Josh Tongue and Tom Helm of Middlesex, have been selected despite being affected by injury during the Australia camp. Tongue had a cortisone injection in his ankle this week but is expected to be fit for the four-day section of the trip, and Helm has been selected for the one-day leg only after struggling in Australia with the hamstring problem with which he ended the 2017 county season. Tom Westley was unavailable after having surgery on the finger injury he suffered during the Lions camp in Australia

James Whitaker, the National Selector, said: “We have selected a total of 22 players for these two series in the West Indies, to ensure we gain the most value in terms of assessing players in both first-class and one-day cricket.

“Haseeb Hameed, Jamie Porter and Toby Roland-Jones are all available again after injuries – Jamie and Toby after working exceptionally hard on the ECB’s Pace Programme over the last couple of months.

“Sam Curran missed out on the Lions training camp in Australia but he has also been training hard, under the supervision of Surrey’s strength and conditioning coaches, before going out to play T20 cricket in New Zealand.

“We have included two members of the Ashes tour squad, Ben Foakes and Mason Crane, for the four-day matches, with the possibility of either or both of them leaving the Lions tour early if they are selected in the England squad for the two Tests in New Zealand in March and April.

“We will be naming that squad in the New Year, and the same goes for the squads for the North-South Series which will be played in Barbados at the end of the Lions tour – and is likely to include the players who have been selected for the one-day series against West Indies A.”

Lions squads:

For whole tour: Keaton Jennings (Lancashire, capt), Joe Clarke (Worcestershire), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Jamie Porter (Essex), Paul Coughlin (Nottinghamshire), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Nick Gubbins (Middlesex), Alex Davies (Lancashire, wk).

Essex CCC presented Championship plaque by Chelmsford City Council

Chelmsford City Council has presented Essex County Cricket Club with a brass plaque, in recognition of the Club becoming the 2017 County Champions of England.

Engraved with the words, “The City of Chelmsford proudly congratulates Essex County Cricket Club on becoming the 2017 County Champions of England”, the plaque was presented by the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Duncan Lumley, during Full Council on Wednesday 6 December.

In presenting the plaque, Councillor Duncan Lumley, said “We congratulate Essex County Cricket Club for some fine performances which have helped them be crowned 2017 County Champions. Essex’s winning performances have been exceptional, and they thoroughly deserve to be awarded this title.”

Club Chairman, John Faragher accepted the plaque on the Club’s behalf, saying: “I would like to thank Chelmsford City Council for presenting the plaque to Essex County Cricket Club in recognition of us becoming the 2017 County Champions. It will forever acknowledge our great achievement and history here in the City of Chelmsford.

“We have an excellent relationship with the County Council and the Club thanks them for their continued support as we strive to progress further.”

The Club lifted the Champion’s trophy for the first time in 25 years after beating Yorkshire in Chelmsford. The County Championship is the domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales. It became an official title in 1890. The competition consists of eighteen clubs named after, and originally representing, historic counties, seventeen from England and one from Wales.

Chelmsford has been home to Essex County Cricket Club since 1967.
