Statement from the ECB regarding All Stars and Dynamos

Please see below for an update from the England and Wales Cricket Board regarding All Stars and Dynamos:

The ECB has recently conducted testing which has shown that a number of items used in our programmes, including the All Stars Cricket and Dynamos Cricket balls and Dynamos batting tee, contain a group of chemicals widely used in plastics called phthalates.

The independent testing we conducted has found that the phthalates in these items were found to be at levels in excess of those permitted by relevant regulations.

To better understand the issue, we then instructed an external expert company to conduct a risk assessment in relation to the cricket balls which has not identified any direct risk to participants in the programmes in relation to these balls.

Both Trading Standards and the Office for Product Safety and Standards have been informed of this issue in relation to the cricket balls, and neither has indicated a
need to recall the balls already in circulation from previous years’ programmes.

We will update if a recall is required for any items.

However, the safety of participants, volunteers and staff is our priority, and out of an abundance of caution, we would advise that the balls should no longer be used.

Further risk assessments are being carried out in relation to the Dynamos Cricket batting tee and the National Programmes PVC banners and we will provide updates on the outcome of these (and any other items which require a risk assessment following independent testing) in due course.

The Dynamos Cricket batting tee and the National Programme PVC banners should no longer be used.

We are very sorry that the affected products haven’t met the standards we’d expect, and for any concern this may cause.

The ECB has arranged independent testing for the bats and stumps given out to programme participants, and can confirm these do not have the same issue, and therefore can continue to be used.

Mindful that club kit is also distributed to the centres providing our National Programmes, the ECB has also arranged for testing for all other plastic items included in the kit bags given to providers.

We are awaiting independent test results for some of these items but can confirm that the bat, stumps and cones have been tested and they do not have the same issue and therefore can continue to be used.

We know how much families value our National Programmes, and particularly the equipment we have been able to provide through All Stars to give children their first taste of cricket.

We have been working hard to explore options with suppliers but unfortunately we will not be able to offer bats, balls and bags to participants in this year’s All Stars programme.

We are reducing the cost of the All Stars programme as a result and are working with clubs and other centres to offer support and advice.

We want to send our apologies to all All Stars and Dynamos participants, clubs and centres impacted by this and hope we can resolve the situation as soon as possible.

T20 Finals Day: The Rematch | Limited Availability

After an all-South Group Vitality Blast Finals Day in 2023, Eagles fans have the chance to watch the rematch of both of Essex’s Finals Day fixtures during the group stages this summer.

In 2023, towering sixes from Matt Critchley and Simon Harmer secured a dramatic semi-final victory over Hampshire before Daniel Sams’ heroics couldn’t quite see Essex over the line in the final against Somerset.

If you want tickets to watch these two heavyweight clashes in Chelmsford, don’t delay. There are only 15 tickets left in the Eagles Area for the Somerset fixture, which is on course to sell out before the end of the week.

Essex are preparing for another Vitality Blast campaign in front of sell-out crowds at The Cloud County Ground in 2024 as ticket sales surpass 20,000.

With the fixture against Sussex Sharks already sold out and Somerset soon to follow, Essex’s fixture against Glamorgan is the last remaining Friday night with capacity for groups.

If you’re looking for a family day out at the Vitality Blast, Essex’s opener against Middlesex costs just £5 for juniors and will have plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Essex’s fixture against Surrey will also be a good choice for families.

Essex trio qualify for Pakistan Super League playoffs

Essex’s Paul Walter, Jordan Cox, and Catherine Dalton have all qualified with their respective teams to the playoffs of the ongoing Pakistan Super League.

Walter’s Peshawar Zalmi currently sit atop the six-team league with 13 points and have guaranteed their place in the Qualifier.

They could, however, still be overhauled by Multan Sultans, whose fast bowlers are being coached by Dalton and have one league game left to play, against Quetta Gladiators today from 4:00pm GMT.

Should the Sultans win that game, they will ensure a first-place finish and set up a Qualifier clash with the Zalmi on Thursday.

However, a loss would see them slip to third, in turn teeing up an Eliminator meeting on Friday with Cox’s Islamabad United, who are in the Eliminator whatever happens.

United have also played all ten of their league matches and currently sit third, a position they will retain if the Sultans see off the Gladiators.

If Quetta win, though, it will mean a fourth-placed finish for United and in turn, an Eliminator fixture against Dalton’s Sultans.

The winner of the Qualifier will progress straight to the Final, which is set to take place in Karachi on Monday, 18 March.

Meanwhile, the Qualifier’s loser will face the winner of the Eliminator in a last-chance game, from which the winner will then become the second team in the Final.

Essex Cricket partner with Southend United Community Trust

Essex Cricket have joined forces with Southend United Community and Educational Trust (SUCET) to provide more opportunities for people to access the game of cricket in the Southend area.

The agreement, which launched on Monday 12 February for an initial period of one year, will see Essex Cricket train the SUCET coaches to deliver the ECB’s All Stars and Dynamos programmes in schools and community settings around the city.

SUCET will also deliver softball cricket as a regular activity on their Holiday Activity Fund camps during school holidays.

With further training, it is expected that SUCET staff will also deliver the Lords Taverners Super 1s sessions that are aimed at people with neurodiversities and Chance to Shine’s Street Cricket programme that is aimed at young people from low-income backgrounds.

The two clubs are also in discussions about including cricket in SUCET’s BTEC educational programme for those aged 16-18.

Youth Engagement Officer at Essex Cricket, Ian Gray (pictured, fourth from left), said: “The SUCET coaches have taken to the task of delivering cricket in their sessions with great energy and enthusiasm.

“I’ve enjoyed training them and I’m very excited to be working with them to provide more cricket playing opportunities to children and young people in Southend.”

Dan Feist, Deputy Chief Executive at Essex Cricket, added: “The partnership with Southend United Community trust will enable us both to reach our ambitions in providing opportunities for more young people to engage in physical activity.

“As well as enhancing their personal education and development, the partnership will enable us to create a broader range of offers in specific areas of Southend and along the A13.

“It will create the opportunity for a lasting connection to sport, improving health and cohesion between communities.”

Dale Spiby, Chief Executive Officer of SUCET, said: “Two innovative and forward-thinking sporting institutions coming together in Essex is a great thing to see. We now have a large group of very capable coaches that have been upskilled to deliver cricket to the young people of our city.

“That can only be a good thing for the children and young people of the area and our two clubs, so long may this type of partnership working remain.”

Essex squad head to Abu Dhabi

The Essex squad are today departing for a two-week pre-season tour in Abu Dhabi as preparations for the 2024 campaign ramp up.

Facilities in the United Arab Emirates’ capital will play host to the Eagles until 24 March, during which time the Eagles will play five days of competitive cricket against other travelling first-class counties.

Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire are the other four English sides making the journey, while a side representing Abu Dhabi – which will also feature Essex players – will also take part in some matches.

A three-day T20 festival involving all six teams is scheduled for 15 – 17 March, before the Eagles play a two-day red-ball match against Somerset on 22 and 23 March.

Anthony McGrath’s squad will also have the opportunity to continue sharpening their skills and fitness as the season draws closer, with five further days given over to training and gym sessions.

The group will arrive back in the UK just under two weeks before the start of the new County Championship campaign, with a visit to Trent Bridge first on the agenda for Essex.

Essex Cricket and Her Game Too announce partnership

As part of Essex Cricket’s continued efforts to champion women and girls in the sport, the Club have proudly entered into a partnership with anti-sexism campaign organisation Her Game Too.

The campaign was originally founded by 12 female football fans in May 2021, before branching into cricket a year later, with the message that sexism cannot, and will not, be tolerated within the sport.

Her Game Too aims to tackle sexism in cricket, promote inclusion, and encourage women and girls to participate in any capacity, with the target of promoting the message that cricket is Her Game Too.

The organisation also uses their own channels to champion women and girls within the sport, highlighting achievements and encouraging people to get involved themselves.

Within the partnership, the Club is committed to working with the campaign to achieve the mutual aims of increasing women and girls’ participation and championing female role models.

The partnership will also extend to the local community, with an aim of tying it into the work already being done to promote women’s safety and encourage the growth of women’s recreational cricket.

John Stephenson, Chief Executive at Essex Cricket, said: “We are very proud as a club to partner with a trailblazing organisation like Her Game Too.

“The women’s game in England has grown exponentially over the last few years, and we remain committed to ensuring that continues as we move forward.

“This partnership underlines our continued dedication to promoting, growing, and championing women and girls’ cricket, and we are excited about the future with it in place.”

Paige Caunce, Director of Cricket, and Lucy Ford, Director and Co-Founder for Her Game Too, added: “Her Game Too Cricket are delighted to be partnering with Essex County Cricket Club.

“As the game moves towards a more inclusive future, it is important for the cricketing community; from fans and volunteers to players and counties, to come together.

“In partnering with Essex CCC, this marks a huge moment for Her Game Too Cricket as we continue to foster alliances with clubs across the game and strive to make cricket a safer and more welcoming environment for all.

“The county has been doing incredible work within the community to encourage women and girls to get involved in cricket and recognising the importance of creating a safe environment for them at Chelmsford.

“Together, we hope we can build on that work and elevate the game even further. We want to thank the Club for their ongoing support, and we are excited to begin working together, sharing Her Game Too Cricket’s message that cricket is for all.”

Essex Cricket have a dedicated system in place for reporting any incidences of discrimination. If you experience sexism/misogyny anywhere within the county, Essex Cricket has a confidential email address – [email protected] – for reporting discriminatory instances.

Alternatively, if you would like to register your concerns anonymously, the Club has an anonymous reporting facility. You can also report discrimination, including sexism/misogyny, via a form on the Club’s website or through the ECB’s reporting channel.

Women’s cricket at The Cloud County Ground in 2024

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Essex Cricket are running a not-to-be-missed offer on women’s cricket in Chelmsford this summer.

The first 500 people who purchase a ticket today for the England v Pakistan ODI on 29 May will be able to claim free tickets to every other day of women’s cricket at The Cloud County Ground in 2024, of which there are eight.

Take advantage of this offer by securing your seats for what promises to be a thrilling ODI between Heather Knight’s Three Lions and Nida Dar’s Women in Green:

Jamie Porter agrees new deal

Seam bowler Jamie Porter has signed a contract extension with Essex that will keep him at the Club until the end of the 2027 season.

Porter, who has spent his entire career with Essex, has taken 504 all-format wickets for the Eagles, of which 447 have been in First-Class cricket at an average of 23.53.

The 30-year-old made his Essex debut in September 2014 against Kent, removing Darren Stevens for his maiden red-ball scalp with only his fifth delivery.

He went on to take at least 50 wickets in each of the following four seasons, including a dazzling haul of 85 at just 16.74 apiece in 2017, as the Eagles romped to a first Championship title in 25 years.

Last season, he claimed 57 red-ball victims, which was not only his best return since 2018, but also made him the third-most successful bowler, and second among seamers, in Division One.

Having committed his immediate future to the Club, Porter said: “It feels great to sign an extension with Essex, a club that I love playing for.

“I’ve developed massively as a cricketer during the decade I’ve spent here, played with some fantastic teammates, and had a lot of fun over the years.

“There’s been a lot of change this winter in the squad, but I still believe we have one of the strongest groups in the country and I’m looking forward to playing a big part in the years ahead!”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “Jamie’s resilience spoke for itself last year as, after a tough couple of seasons with injury, he re-established himself as one of the best bowlers in the country.

“We’ve known all about his quality for years, so we were delighted for him when it all came together again last summer.

“Now, as one of our senior bowlers, we’re hoping he can replicate that form again to both make us successful and provide inspiration to our younger players.”
