City Hall plays host to celebration of cricket in East London

Essex Cricket, in collaboration with Middlesex Cricket, hosted ‘A celebration of community cohesion and aspiration through cricket in East London’ event at City Hall on the evening of Monday 19 February.

The highlight of the evening was a series of panel discussions featuring notable figures from cricket in East London. The panels included former professionals, female trailblazers, and volunteers who are activating the game in our region.

Among the attendees were former international cricketers Nasser Hussain, Mike Gatting, and Angus Fraser, who participated in the professional panel discussion.

The event, driven to creation by Unmesh Desai, member of the London Assembly for City & East and Essex Cricket Community Director, was also attended by Deputy Mayor of London Howard Dawber, who addressed the 230 guests in attendance.

Guests from the community, who have played significant roles in promoting inclusivity and participation in cricket at all levels, were welcomed to celebrate the game’s impact on people of diverse ages, genders, and backgrounds in East London.

Activities included a cricket session by children from Ekota Academy (Goodmayes Park, Ilford), Redbridge CC (Clayhall Park, Redbridge) and Hawks CC (Jubilee Playing Fields, Waltham Forest).

Also on display was a showcase of table cricket, which is designed to enable young people with disabilities to play and compete in the sport.

The discussions, which were chaired by BBC London’s Kevin Hand, were rounded off by closing speeches from England & Wales Cricket Board Chief Executive, Richard Gould and Essex Cricket Community Chair, Rachel Lewis.

Nasser Hussain, a staunch supporter of grassroots initiatives in the region, emphasised the importance of such events in bringing together people of diverse backgrounds who share a passion for cricket.

He said: “Events like this are hugely important to the continued growth of our sport. You only had to look around the room to see that with the variety of people, the variety of ages and the variety of cultures.

“No one needs to tell anyone, in particular the British Asian community, how important cricket is to people’s lives.

“It’s like a religion and a second nature, and they are mad about it. Cricket is going through the roof now and it’s a huge part of this community.”

Arfan Akram, East London Cricket Operations Manager, added: “The inspirational East London community continues to play a huge part in activating the game we love.

“The opportunity to showcase the journeys, challenges and personal stories of inspiring individuals at an iconic venue such as City Hall was very powerful.

“One of the aims of the event was to empower those within our community to share their experiences and hopefully inspire the number of youngsters in the room to follow their dreams within our sport.”

“The panel discussions covered a diverse range of topics, including the advocacy efforts of South Asian female role models in programmes aimed at dismantling barriers to access for young girls and the aspirations of young cricketers.

“The initiatives of volunteers in facilitating pathways for students from state schools, and the invaluable insights shared by former England legends regarding their personal journeys and experiences were also discussed.

“It was an honour to host this event in collaboration with Middlesex Cricket as part of the Cricket4London initiative, where cross-boundary partnerships are having a huge impact in engaging, exciting and enhancing everyone’s experience in cricket.”

Matt Critchley signs new Essex contract

Last season’s Player of the Year Matt Critchley has signed a contract extension to remain at the Club until the end of the 2027 season.

The 27-year-old all-rounder moved to Chelmsford from Derbyshire ahead of the 2022 season, and has since played 54 games in all formats for the Eagles.

He made his Essex debut at home to Kent, and made an immediate stunning impression, hitting a sparkling 132 in his first Eagles innings before claiming a four-wicket haul.

Critchley has since scored over 1,400 First-Class runs for the Club at an average of 31.91, including three centuries, while he has struck 527 T20 runs with two fifties.

His leg-breaks have also brought him 80 all-format wickets in an Essex shirt, and last season he claimed career-best shortest-format figures of 5/28 against Middlesex.

Upon agreeing to extend his stay at The Cloud County Ground, Critchley said: “I’m very pleased. I’ve enjoyed my first couple of years here and I very much wanted to stay.

“Obviously, we’ve had a couple of changes to the team this winter, but we’ve made some good additions, so I’m very much looking forward to this year and the next few years.”

“I’ve felt like I’ve constantly been improving since I’ve been here, which was one of the main reasons I wanted to stay.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to extend Matt’s contract. He’s a hugely popular member of the squad and his performances have been superb.

“His value to the team is huge, and that was on full display with his Player of the Year-winning performances last year.

“He’s been working especially hard on his batting recently, and that has brought a lot of positive results. He’s great to work with, and we’re looking forward to having him around for a long time yet!”

Essex trio gearing up for Pakistan Super League

The 2024 Pakistan Super League, with Essex representation in Jordan Cox, Paul Walter, and Catherine Dalton, begins today.

Cox’s Islamabad United travel to Lahore Qalandars in the tournament opener, which takes place from 2:30pm GMT.

Meanwhile, Walter and Dalton will get their first taste of the action on Sunday, with the former representing Peshawar Zalmi and the latter filling the role of fast bowling coach at Multan Sultans.

Walter’s Zalmi take on Quetta Gladiators in the tournament’s second match from 9:00am GMT, before Dalton’s side host Karachi Kings later that day at 2:30pm GMT.

Cox, who was selected in the PSL’s draft as a highest-category Platinum pick, has had a globetrotting winter, turning out in the UAE’s T10 and ILT20 leagues, as well as the Big Bash in Australia.

He was the second-highest run-scorer in the former competition while representing Bangla Tigers, hitting 265 runs in six matches at an average of 66.25 and a colossal strike rate of 232.46.

Walter has also had an off-season to remember, winning Australia’s Big Bash League with Brisbane Heat, as his 17 wickets represented the joint-third-highest haul in the tournament.

Former Ireland international Dalton has made her own mark away from the field, with her appointment making her the first female PSL coach, as well as the first female fast bowling coach of any professional men’s team.

“It’s powerful to see female coaches on the sidelines,” said Dalton. “You want to break a barrier, and it fills you with a lot of pride that you’ve done that.”

“But you want it to be the pathway for other females to break into the men’s profession, because there’s so much knowledge and understanding out there in women’s sport and women’s coaching. It needs to be the norm.”

Both Dalton and Cox’s second games will see them go indirectly head-to-head, as the Sultans’ Dalton-coached fast bowling battery faces off against Cox and Islamabad on Tuesday, 20 February.

The group stages of the competition conclude on Tuesday 12 March, with the final set to take place the following Monday, the 18th.

Essex Women’s fixtures released for 2024

Essex Women will start their 2024 season against Sussex in the ECB County 50-Over competition on Sunday 21 April.

The Eagles will compete on four fronts in the upcoming summer, including defending their title in the London Championship and hosting Kent in the Battle of the Bridge T20 in August.

Their defence starts with a trip to Middlesex on Saturday 08 June, with that fixture sandwiched between a pair of double-headers that open their County T20 campaign.

The first of those sees Kelly Castle’s side take on Kent and Suffolk on Sunday 26 May, before facing Middlesex and Berkshire three weeks later.

The highlight of the season will be welcoming Kent across the Dartford Crossing for the floodlit Battle of the Bridge match at The Cloud County Ground on Wednesday 07 August.

Castle’s charges are set to conclude their season at home to Sussex in the London Championship, whom they defeated in the final game of 2023 to confirm their lifting of last season’s title, a week later.

While some fixtures are yet to be confirmed, there will be a minimum of 17 matches for Essex across 13 days this summer, with three of their seven home fixtures set to be hosted in Chelmsford.

Sam Cook appointed Club Vice-Captain

Essex Cricket can confirm the appointment of Sam Cook as Club Vice-Captain ahead of the 2024 season.

Chelmsford-born seamer Cook is a graduate of the Essex Academy and, since making his debut in 2017, has made more than 130 appearances in all formats.

Although he has claimed 67 white-ball wickets at an average of 29.64 in the five seasons since his Essex one-day bow, it is in the first-class arena where Cook has been most prolific.

Having become renowned for his relentless accuracy, the 26-year-old has taken 252 red-ball wickets in an Essex shirt, at a miserly average of just 18.41.

Cook made his debut in a tour match against the West Indies at Chelmsford in August 2017, before breaking into the first team for the final four matches of the County Championship season.

He claimed 22 scalps at 24.22 each, including two five-wicket hauls against Hampshire and Yorkshire, as the club cruised to a first Championship title in 25 years, finishing 72 points clear at the summit.

Four years later, Cook enjoyed his most prolific season yet, picking up 58 Championship victims at a meagre 14.43 apiece, before he followed it up in 2022 and 2023 with another 51 and 48, respectively.

The Chelmsford-born bowler has been recognised for his domestic form, receiving several call-ups to the England Lions squad on tours to Australia and Sri Lanka.

In addition, he became the first English bowler to reach 200 first-class wickets while averaging under 20 in more than 50 years when he took 3/31 in the first innings against Yorkshire in September 2022.

Cook said: “It’s a huge honour to be appointed as vice-captain. I grew up just down the road from the ground, and it’s meant so much to me to play here for as long as I have.

“I’m at a point in my career where I’m able to step up in terms of my position in the squad and assist Tom and the management where I can.

“I’ll be as motivated as ever to keep taking wickets for Essex, but hopefully I can now be a mentoring voice for some of the younger bowlers who are beginning to come through as well.”

Current Club Captain, Tom Westley, added: “It’s great to appoint Sam as my vice-captain for the coming season. He’s an Essex boy, and I know how much the club means to him.

“He’s not only developed into one of the best seam bowlers in the country over recent seasons, but he’s developed as a person.

“He’s a natural leader within our dressing room, as with many others. I have no doubt that he will have a positive impact in this role, and help to drive the club forward to win more trophies!”
