Thain hits 40 but England lose to Windies at U19 World Cup

Noah Thain being in the runs once more was not enough to prevent England from slipping to defeat to West Indies in their final group-stage match at the Under-19 World Cup.

Thain struck 40 to back up his unbeaten 63 against hosts South Africa on Tuesday, but despite the Windies losing eight wickets, they narrowly chased down England’s 192 all out in 41 overs.

However, the Three Lions have still topped Group B and secured safe progress to the Super Six stage, where they will be joined in a new group by Australia, Sri Lanka, and one of Namibia or Zimbabwe.

Luc Benkenstein and Charlie Allison also retained their places in the England side, who lost the toss and were asked to bat first in Potchefstroom.

Batting at three, Thain provided some resistance to the early loss of Jaydn Denly by putting on 50 for the second wicket with captain Ben McKinney.

He then added a further 47 with top-scorer Hamza Shaikh, who individually made 54, but beyond the contributions of that pair, England struggled.

The Three Lions were eventually bowled out in 46.3 overs as Nathan Edward took three wickets, while a further six were split evenly between Isai Thorne, Raneico Smith, and Tarrique Edward.

In reply, West Indies also lost a wicket in the first over, that of Adrian Weir, but captain Stephan Pascal underpinned the first half of the chase with a measured 58.

When he was caught by Thain off the bowling of Tazeem Ali, the Windies were six down and still required 44, but it was Sint Maarten-born Nathan Edward who took up the mantle.

He hit an unbeaten 49 to shepherd his side over the line, including the winning four, even as Benkenstein bowled his namesake Tarrique in his sole over, the penultimate one of the innings.

Barring a colossal net run-rate swing, Australia will top Group C ahead of Sri Lanka, while the identity of the African nation who will finish third and join them in the Super Six will be confirmed tomorrow.

Regardless of whether it is Namibia or Zimbabwe, both of whom are winless so far, England will play them in the next stage on Wednesday 31 January, again in Potchefstroom, at 8:00am GMT.

Paul Walter is a Big Bash League champion

Paul Walter is a Big Bash League champion after his Brisbane Heat side defeated Sydney Sixers by 54 runs in the final of the 13th edition of the tournament at the SCG.

The Heat, who finished top of the table following the league stage of the tournament, gained revenge for their defeat by the second-placed Sixers in the Qualifier play-off.

Walter, whose nickname of ‘Tall Paul’ proved an instant hit with legions of new fans down under, took 17 wickets throughout the tournament as the Heat sealed their second BBL title.

In doing so, they have become only the third team in the competition, alongside the Sixers, who are three-time champions, and Perth Scorchers, who have five titles, to lift the trophy multiple times.

A seven-match winning streak to start the competition, not including two matches which were washed out, set the Heat well on their way to qualification for the play-offs.

Although they stuttered in their final league match and in the Qualifier, they hit back with some force to dispatch Adelaide Strikers by 54 runs in the Challenger, sealing their spot in the final.

Walter, who also hit 99 runs in the competition, was bettered in the Heat’s wicket-taking charts by only Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson’s respective hauls of 20 and 19.

Meanwhile, Josh Brown, who struck a scintillating 140 from just 57 deliveries in the Challenger match, led the way with the bat, totalling an enormous 366 runs at ana average of 40.66.

Walter’s achievements on the field, as well as his new-found cult hero status, saw him named to the BBL13 team of the tournament.

Everyone at Essex congratulates Paul on a magnificent achievement, and we look forward to welcoming him back to Chelmsford in April as a Big Bash winner.

Thain hits fifty as England beat South Africa in U19 World Cup

Essex’s Noah Thain crunched an unbeaten half-century as England defeated Under-19 World Cup hosts South Africa by 36 runs on the DLS method to make it back-to-back wins.

Thain amassed 63 not out from 82 deliveries, including eight fours, to top-score in England’s innings, which saw them chasing the Proteas’ 230 all out.

The Three Lions’ chase was interrupted in the 29th over with the score at 137-2, and despite no further play being possible, their total comfortably exceeded the DLS par score, giving them victory.

Tazeem Ali, who took 3/26 from ten overs, was the pick of the bowlers, while Eddie Jack and Jaydn Denly also collected three wickets apiece.

Thain took two catches, both off Denly, as the hosts were dismissed in the final over despite a 55-ball 64 from opener Steve Stolk having initially given them a platform.

A stand of 92 between Thain and captain Ben McKinney, who made 48, helped England recover from the early loss of Denly.

Thain then remained unbeaten through to the curtailment, which was at first due to the threat of lightning before heavy rain did ensure an early end to the match and an England win.

Luc Benkenstein and Charlie Allison were both also in the England team, with the 1998 champions now safely through to the Super Six stage.

The Three Lions beat Scotland in their tournament opener on Saturday, and have the chance to make it three wins from three against West Indies on Friday, prior to the start of the next round.

Paul Walter and Brisbane Heat reach BBL Final

There’s no doubt about it when people say it’s been a debut Big Bash tournament to remember for ‘Tall’ Paul Walter.

His side Brisbane Heat have reached the final which takes place on Wednesday 24 January at the SCG against Sydney Sixers.

It’s with the ball in hand where Walter has made a big impression, taking 16 wickets at an average of just 16.68, with only teammate Xavier Bartlett taking more wickets than the 6ft 7in all-rounder.

Walter has become somewhat of a cult hero out in Queensland after showcasing his high-level bowling and most importantly his now famous airplane celebration which the Heat fans have grown to love.

‘Tall Paul’ made such a big impact that he was also named in the BBL13 Team of the Tournament. Alongside his incredible bowling, Paul scored 93 runs and took four catches along the way.

Everyone at Essex wishes Paul all the best in the Final tomorrow!
