A Festive Celebration: Recapping the Long Room Christmas Lunch 2023

Lord’s Cricket Ground once again hosted the annual Christmas Lunch on Thursday 07 December for the much-anticipated Long Room Christmas Lunch. Hosted by Graham Gooch, this year’s event was powered by Seat Unique and sponsored by MHA.

The event also welcomed former cricket and broadcaster, Jonathan Agnew as the guest speaker, creating an unforgettable afternoon of cricketing stories and festive celebrations.

The Long Room, steeped in history and tradition, served as the perfect setting for this special occasion with guests having the opportunity to take a tour of the Home of Cricket.

The highlight of the afternoon was looking back on the illustrious career of Jonathan Agnew, who joined Graham Gooch to share stories from his playing and broadcasting experiences.

Our Club events raise money for the Essex Cricket Foundation and the Long Room Lunch was an opportunity to hear from Foundation Chair, Myles Churchill who shared information on the projects supported by the charity this year.

Information on the events coming up in 2024 will be available in the new year, including our next Lord’s Christmas Lunch and Golf Day. To register your interest for 2024 events, contact [email protected].

Thank you to everyone who attended one of our events this year and special thanks to Seat Unique and MHA for supporting this year’s Lord’s Long Room Christmas Lunch.

Club Statement: Independent report published

The independent report into historic allegations of discrimination at Essex County Cricket Club has today been published following a comprehensive and thorough investigation by Katharine Newton KC.

The report aimed to identify and, where necessary, begin to rectify the past actions that contradicted the values of equality, respect, and inclusivity, which the Club prides itself on today.

The Club is fully aware that publishing the report is the next step in upholding those values and implementation of the 15 recommendations set out in Ms Newton’s report has already begun.

Essex acknowledges her findings and are committed to addressing past incidents of discrimination against former employees. All victims involved throughout the investigation have received an apology from the Club. Their courageous actions to report incidents of discrimination during their time at Essex has been pivotal in getting to this stage.

The Club remains dedicated to taking the necessary action to make meaningful changes and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Essex County Cricket Club Chair, Anu Mohindru KC, said: “Essex County Cricket Club welcomes the publishing of the independent report and it is an important step in trying to rectify the past mistakes, but most importantly creating a brighter future for everyone associated with our Club.

“It is evident from Ms Newton’s findings that there have been some fundamental errors in the past, which don’t reflect the Essex of today. Significant progress has been made across the Club to build a workplace that values and respects every individual, regardless of their background, identity, and beliefs. This extends to the fantastic community work being carried out across the region and we understand our responsibility to our local communities as the county club who represents them.

“I have personally met with the victims to apologise on behalf of the Club and explain the work carried out by the Board in producing the report. Following recommendations from the independent committee, the Club is now dealing with the process concerning any individuals where sanctions may be imposed. The Club will handle these promptly but with fairness to the individuals involved.

“I wish to thank every individual who was part of the investigation and commend those who spoke out against discrimination. We would also like to thank Katharine Newton KC who has worked meticulously throughout the process.”

The Club continues to keep the ECB informed.

Players spread Christmas cheer at Broomfield Hospital

On Wednesday 06 December, a seven-strong contingent of Essex players and coaches visited two children’s wards at Broomfield Hospital to give out presents ahead of Christmas.

Captain Tom Westley and Head Coach Anthony McGrath, along with Jamie Porter, Ben and Charlie Allison, Shane Snater, and Lead Physiotherapist Vishal Kanji, attended the hospital and met with in-patients across two wards.

They gifted miniature bats, soft balls, plush Eddie the Eagle cuddly toys, and chocolate selection boxes to the children and ward staff.

“We’re always keen to come down because we know how much of a tough time it must be to have children in hospital at Christmas,” said McGrath following the visit.

“Having children myself, seeing families go through that is not easy. It’s nice to see smiles on a few faces and to bring a bit of cheer, but it puts things into perspective.

“We wish the families all the best, and hopefully they can get through it together.”

Essex Men’s 2024 fixtures revealed

Essex are set to begin their 2024 season on Friday 05 April with a trip to Trent Bridge to face Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, with the first Battle of the Bridge against Kent following at The Cloud County Ground a week later.

The ECB has confirmed the men’s county and women’s regional domestic fixtures for next summer, which also includes 22 men’s and women’s T20 double headers.

The County Championship will be played in each month of the season, including back-to-back rounds in June and July that will see the Eagles face Durham at home and Surrey away.

Those mid-summer fixtures sit within two blocks of Vitality Blast action, with Essex starting the T20 campaign in Bristol against Gloucestershire on Thursday 30 May.

In a rematch of last summer’s final, Anthony McGrath’s side then take on Somerset at Taunton the following day as part of Vitality Blast Off, before playing Middlesex on Sunday 02 June in the first home Blast fixture.

There will be two Sunday T20 home fixtures, with Surrey visiting Chelmsford on 14 July for the final home group stage game, though all of the Eagles’ other home Blast fixtures will be played either on a Thursday or Friday, including the home clash with Kent Spitfires on July 11.

The Blast group stage concludes for Essex on Friday 19 July with a trip to the Ageas Bowl to take on this summer’s semi-final opponents Hampshire Hawks.

The start of the Metro Bank One Day Cup follows five days later as Warwickshire head to The Cloud County Ground, before the Eagles again travel to Bristol in their first away 50-over match on Sunday 28 July.

All four home One Day Cup matches are in Chelmsford, though there will be an opportunity of out-ground cricket on Tuesday 06 August with an away game against Yorkshire set to be hosted in Scarborough.

Back-to-back away games against Nottinghamshire on Sunday 11 August and Sussex three days later conclude the 50-over group stage, before the knockout stages immediately follow.

Two Championship fixtures are set to take place during the school summer holidays, with Essex facing Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl from Thursday 22 August, and Worcestershire at home a week later.

Trent Bridge will again host the One Day Cup final, which is set for Sunday 22 September, eight days after Vitality Blast Finals Day that once again takes place at Edgbaston.

Essex’s 2024 county summer ends with a home match against defending champions Surrey, beginning on Thursday 26 September.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Edwards Cup has been expanded to include 10 group-stage matches for each team, with Sunrisers hosting Southern Vipers and Western Storm in Chelmsford.

The 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy will also see Sunrisers welcome The Blaze, Thunder and Northern Diamonds to The Cloud County Ground throughout the summer.

The format of Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day will for the first time mirror Vitality Blast Finals Day, with two semi-finals and a final to be staged at the Incora County Ground, Derby on Saturday 22 June.

Both women’s and men’s 50-over finals will be played on the same weekend, with the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester staging the Rachael Heyhoe Flint final the day before the One Day Cup showpiece.
