Ronnie Jackson called up for England Men’s LD tour

Essex’s Ronnie Jackson has been included in England Men’s Learning Disability tour squad for a tri-series against South Africa and Australia in November.

The series, which will take place in South Africa, will see each of the three competing nations play each other three times at the Groenkloof Oval in Pretoria.

After a week of group-stage competition, the final between the top two countries will then take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Jackson has been a member of the Essex Ability set-up since 2011, hitting almost 1,500 runs with a top score of 123 not out.

This season, he amassed a total of 107 runs in five matches with a top score of 53, made in a four-wicket win over Surrey.

He was also part of the victorious Hawks side that won the Disability Premier League this summer, hitting 50 runs across four innings.

England’s first warm-up match is on 10th November against Australia, before the two sides lock horns again two days later in the first of the Three Lions’ competitive outings in the series.

Black History Month: Donovan Miller’s Story

Growing up against the backdrop of one of the best cricketing sides of all time, it was almost inevitable that Donovan Miller would end up forging a career in the sport.

Born in Jamaica in 1979, Miller was five years old when a 16-strong West Indies touring squad returned from England, the birthplace of the game, on the back of a crushing 5-0 series victory.

Featuring fellow Jamaicans Jeff Dujon, Michael Holding, and Courtney Walsh, the Windies team had reeled off a run of wins that was more akin to a series of imbalanced warm-up matches than any real competitive encounters.

Two of the victories were by a margin of an innings, with two more by eight and nine wickets, respectively, and the entire series-long drubbing is still the only whitewash by a touring side in a series longer than three matches.

Clive Lloyd would hand over the captaincy to Viv Richards after another triumphant tour to Australia in the winter that followed, but there would be no let-up in the Caribbean region’s superiority in the years that followed.

Miller was thousands of miles away from both of those tours, and was just beginning to reach an age that provides real memories.

However, he still recalls being heavily immersed in that decade of dominance under the captaincy of two knights of the realm, with exposure coming from a multitude of different angles.

“You’d see a lot of people walking around in the streets with their radios, listening to the games, and that caught my eye,” he says.

“I didn’t really have an introduction to cricket, it was just that it was all around in that way, and we’d then play in the street and on the beach! That’s how my love for the game really developed.

“The Caribbean is a collection of very sporty nations, and as a youngster, I’d try and play anything I could – football, table tennis, or track and field.

“It would be anything, but in those days, West Indies cricket was at the top of its game, and that really caught my attention.

For Miller, there was no shortage of individuals to look up to either, with the West Indies side of that day full of personalities who were in the process of establishing themselves as legends of the game.

In addition to his compatriots Holding and Walsh, there was another express pace bowler who caught Miller’s eye.

“Brian Lara was obviously the one who everyone idolised as a left-handed batter, but my hero was Malcolm Marshall, because he wasn’t a very tall individual.

“He ran in from an angle, he was still very quick, and he was very confident, so that led me towards idolising him as a fast bowler.”

Having made the decision, influenced by legends, to carve out his own path in cricket, Miller arrived in the United Kingdom as an 18-year-old to study, with his development in the sport concurrently taking a giant leap.

“I came to stay with my grandad in West London,” he explains. “I didn’t really know anything about the cricket community here apart from that there was a lot of it!

“There were more opportunities here than in the Caribbean. To be able to get to play on a Saturday, you had to be really good, because there were perhaps only two teams per club.

“You would have to be good enough to make one of those two teams, or else you just wouldn’t play! Whereas here, there are so many different leagues, and so many different opportunities where you could get involved.”

In particular, there was one specific meeting, at one of cricket’s most hallowed venues, that set Miller on the path to realising a dream.

“I remember my grandad and I were living very close to Lord’s, and after he took me down there I remember saying to him I wanted to play county cricket!

“We met Angus Fraser, who was the one who started to explain to me how it works, and he put me through a very good club in the Middlesex Premier League.

“After that, when I became a bit more mature, I moved across to East London where I began to spend a lot of time with the Essex League, and from that, that’s how I got involved with Essex!”

From humble beginnings, Miller has ascended to the very top of the game, having earned multiple franchise T20 tournament victories as a coach.

He was part of the backroom staff for the Jamaica Tallawahs’ victorious Caribbean Premier League campaign in 2016, and went on to lead the Vancouver Knights to the in the Global T20 Canada.

Donovan was appointed the Club’s Pathway Fast Bowling Lead Coach in January 2023. He is an integral and hugely valued part of the staff at Essex, and all at The Cloud County Ground are delighted to call him a colleague, as we share his origin story for Black History Month.

Robin Das signs two-year contract extension

Essex Cricket is delighted to announce that Leytonstone-born batter Robin Das has signed a contract extension to keep him at the Club until the end of the 2025 season.

The 21-year-old, who is a product of the Essex Academy, hit a memorable century on his First-Class debut against Ireland this summer, having previously made his T20 and List A bows in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

A positive batter who often looks to seize the initiative, Das’s style is demonstrated in his respective strike rates, with that metric sitting above 100 in all three formats.

Indeed, his Ireland ton was an exhibition of hitting as he racked up 132 in just 118 deliveries, and he then followed it up just four days later with a swashbuckling 33-ball 69 in the Vitality Blast opener against Gloucestershire.

Not content with that, he also broke records by striking two sparkling consecutive double-centuries for the 2nd XI in September, becoming the first recorded Essex player to achieve that feat.

Having amassed 214 in a crushing innings victory against Kent, Das made even more of an impression a week later away to Middlesex, notching 232 off just 180 deliveries to end 2023 with 669 2nd XI Championship runs.

“I’m really happy to get this contract signed, especially after what was such a memorable season for me,” said Das. “I really feel at home here, and that environment has allowed me to play my natural game.

“I’m obviously someone who likes to play with freedom, and it’s fantastic that the coaches and the rest of the guys we have here are willing to let me do that because it’s a really fun way to play!”

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “It’s great for all of us here that such a talented and dynamic batter like Robin has extended his time at the Club.

“We knew he had a lot of natural talent when he was coming through the pathway, but we’ve seen that properly begin to manifest itself with the season he’s just had.

“He has such a high ceiling, and we’re now really looking forward to seeing him reach even loftier targets in the years to come.”

Catherine Dalton becomes first ever female PSL coach

Essex’s Catherine Dalton has been appointed as fast bowling coach at Multan Sultans of the Pakistan Super League.

The trailblazing announcement makes Dalton the first female PSL coach and the first female fast bowling coach of any professional men’s team.

Dalton, 30, previously represented Ireland internationally in four ODIs and four international T20Is after being granted citizenship eight years ago.

She played nine matches for Essex Women in 2023, hitting a total of 253 runs, including a top score of 109 against Kent in the London Championship, at an average of 31.63.

“Having worked in Pakistan with some of the Multan Sultan players on two previous visits, I am really thrilled to be officially joining up with the franchise at the PSL,” said Dalton.

“It’s not lost on me the ground-breaking moment for a female fast bowling coach to be working in a major men’s T20 franchise. I am very humbled by the opportunity and cannot wait to hopefully help make a difference on multiple levels.”

“Catherine has been part of our player-development programme for almost five years now. I have seen how she has improved players first-hand,” added Sultans owner Ali Tareen, who also revealed he doubles up as her translator.

“I always knew she would become a fast-bowling coach at a high level, and I am so glad that her first opportunity [has come] at the Sultans.”

The next edition of the PSL, the ninth iteration in its history, will be held between 8th February and 24th March next year.

The Sultans, based in southern Punjab in central-eastern Pakistan, have previously been crowned champions of the tournament on one occasion, in 2021, and also finished as runners-up in 2022 and 2023.

Essex representation in England Over-60s World Cup squad

Essex’s Mel Hussain and Marcus Young have been selected in England’s squad to compete at the second Over-60s World Cup in India next year.

This will be England’s first outing at the World Cup, having not competed at the inaugural tournament, which was hosted on Australia’s Gold Coast in September 2022 and in which Pakistan defeated New Zealand in the final.

Mel, the older brother of former England and Essex captain Nasser, qualified just this season as the side’s one permitted 59-year-old.

Meanwhile, Marcus is 68 and has been a bus driver for Stagecoach, out of their Bow depot, for the past 39 years, with his company describing him as “a real credit to the Bow team and to us at Stagecoach.”

“We at Essex Seniors are proud to have them both in our set-up,” added Essex Cricket’s 60+ 1st XI manager, Mark Taylor. “Both were instrumental in helping England overcome Australia in this season’s Grey Ashes.”

Those Grey Ashes saw England face their oldest foes in five ODIs in July, with grounds in Thame, Burton-on-Trent, Southport, Chipping Campden (Gloucestershire), and Littlehampton hosting the series.

Since then, England have also travelled to Toronto for the Canada Cup, where they faced Australia, the United States, as well as the host nation, winning two of their three matches.

The World Cup will be hosted in Chennai, on India’s south-eastern coast, between 19th February and 3rd March next year, with further details to be announced.
