2024 Fixture Release: One Day To Go

Essex’s fixtures for the 2024 season, delivered by Eastern Crane Hire, will be released on Thursday 23 November.

Having just concluded a summer that saw the Eagles take part in an enthralling County Championship title race and appear at Vitality Blast Finals Day, excitement is already building for next year.

Both general admission and hospitality tickets for the Championship and the Metro Bank One Day Cup will go on sale at the same time as the fixture release.

Ahead of tomorrow’s fixture launch, the ECB have confirmed the one encounter for next summer, which will see Essex travel to Somerset for a rematch of this year’s T20 final on Friday 31 May.

This fixture will form part of an expanded Vitality Blast Off event that will see seven double-headers, each made up of a Charlotte Edwards Cup and a Blast match, played over four days.

To receive the full fixtures straight to your inbox as soon as they are released tomorrow, sign up to the Club’s official Over & Out! e-news:

Jordan Cox: “Excited to get going!”

Essex’s new signing Jordan Cox headed to new home this week to chats about his move over the bridge from Kent.

The 23-year-old spoke with Essex Cricket TV about his goals and ambitions whilst in CM2, as well looking ahead to his plans overseas this winter.

Community Engagement Campaign of the Year Winners

Essex Cricket were among the winners at this year’s ECB Business of Cricket Awards, scooping the Community Engagement Campaign of the Year Award.

This recognition was earned for the outstanding efforts in hosting the Ireland versus Bangladesh One Day International series, which showcased a remarkable commitment to engaging with the local Bangladeshi and Muslim communities.

Through the fantastic support of the local community and partnerships with organisations such as the Chelmsford Muslim Society, Essex Cricket adopted an innovative and inclusive approach to community engagement during this landmark event for the county. The Club demonstrated a deep understanding of the diverse community it serves and leveraged this understanding to create a truly immersive experience for fans and residents.

The Club reached out to the local Bangladeshi and Muslim communities, fostering a strong sense of inclusion and cultural representation ahead of the series. A wide range of activities and events were organised to celebrate the rich heritage of these communities, such as traditional food stalls and music performances.

To ensure that everyone could participate in the events, the Club proactively aimed to make the fixtures as accessible as possible for every spectator attending, including prayer sessions, diverse food and drink choices and cultural sensitivity training for staff.

The Club’s commitment to grassroots development was a focus throughout the series, as local schools, clubs and community groups were actively part of the match day experience through activations, such as guard of honours, entertainment and opportunities for local players to be net bowlers for both sides.

Essex Cricket Chief Executive, John Stephenson, said: “We are honoured to have won the Community Award at this year’s Business of Cricket Awards and it’s a fantastic achievement for the Club.

“This recognition is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. We are proud of our role in bringing diverse communities together through the love of cricket.”

“This campaign was made possible through the dedicated efforts and hard work of everyone at Essex Cricket and the enthusiastic support of the local community.

“It exemplifies the Club’s commitment to embracing diversity and special thanks to Cricket Ireland and the many individuals within our local community who played their part in creating something special over the three fixtures.”

Essex representation on MCC Overseas Tour to Kenya

Arfan Akram and Simon Fernandes will provide representation from Essex as the Marylebone Cricket Club’s 2023 Overseas Touring Programme concludes with a two-week trip to Kenya.

Akram, who was part of the very first intake into the Essex Academy in 2003 and has played eight First-Class matches for Cambridge UCCE, will lead the group as Tour Manager.

Having also played more than 100 matches for the MCC, he currently sits on the club’s Committee, alongside working as Essex Cricket in the Community’s East London Operations Manager.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Fernandes, who has represented Essex Second XI and plays club cricket for Colchester and East Essex, will be one member of the 13-strong playing squad.

Captained by former Kent and Leicestershire all-rounder Darren Stevens and featuring three other players with first-class experience, the group will play eight games of varying formats.

Matches, ranging between 20, 30, and 50 overs per side, will take place in the capital Nairobi, Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, and the south-eastern coastal city of Mombasa.

“We are thrilled to be travelling to Kenya for such a significant tour,” said Akram. “We are looking forward to eight competitive matches against strong opposition.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for this set of Playing Members to represent the Club abroad.

“As with any MCC tour, coaching local children is one of the main priorities of the trip and we have some interesting sessions lined up which are part of several projects in the country.

“It is also fitting that we will pay tribute to the late Simon Prodger, who had undertaken amazing work in Kenya through the EACDT programme.”

Tour Squad:

Arfan Akram (Tour Manager), Adam Ball, Harry Came, Alex Evans, Simon Fernandes, Tushaar Karia, Abhishek Kulkarni, Cillian McDonnell, Charles Page-Morris, Marcus O’Riordan, Darren Stevens, Jack Tector, Finlay Yates, Chris Whittock, Neil Bainton (Umpire).

New Board Chair appointed

Essex Cricket is pleased to advise that long-planned changes to the leadership of the Club’s Board have taken effect.

Anu Mohindru KC has been appointed as Chair on a permanent basis, replacing Sir Stephen O’Brien, who had been in the role on an interim basis and will now remain as a member of the Board.

Current Board member Victoria Keil has stepped into the position of Deputy Chair, vacated by Anu, marking her first appointment to the leadership of the Board.

Victoria holds a BSc and an MSc in fields of psychology, as well as a CIPD qualification, and she has also completed the Executive Leadership Programme from the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

She is an experienced People Director and Coach who partners with early-stage start-ups and scale-ups to build and execute on great people strategy, operations, infrastructure, and culture.

Both Anu and Victoria were voted on to their current positions on the Board by the Club’s Members at the AGM in November 2022, with Anu taking over as interim deputy chair a month later.

On his appointment, Anu said: “I’m honoured to take on this appointment at an important time for the Club.

“I would like to extend my huge appreciation to Sir Stephen for all he has done while in the interim role, and I will be looking to build on his efforts.

“As shown this summer, the Club is in a good place on the field, and I am looking forward to working together with our Members to make sure we can be an equally positive influence in our community as well.”

Noah Thain pens new rookie contract

Essex Cricket is pleased to announce that young all-rounder Noah Thain has signed a new rookie contract, tying him to the Club until the end of the 2024 season.

Thain, 18, extends his existing deal which he signed in May, after a productive campaign in the Metro Bank One Day Cup that saw him amass 159 runs in six matches at an average of 39.75.

His top score of 75 not out, made against Leicestershire Foxes, was one of two half-centuries he hit in the competition, precipitating a call-up to England Under-19s for five Youth ODIs against Australia.

Thain also made an impression in the red-ball arena this summer, making his first-class debut against Ireland just two days after signing his first rookie deal.

He would go on to appear internationally in that format too, playing both of England Under-19s’ Youth Tests in September, once more against Australia, with the second match seeing him strike a fluent 88.

Having signed on the dotted line, Thain said: “It means a lot. Having come through the academy, it was great to have a good season this summer and I’m hoping to be able to kick on now.

“The badge means so much, and the opportunity to represent this county is really special.”

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “It’s vindication of everything we try to do in relation to scouting, the academy, and player development when we get to this point with young, local cricketers.

“Everyone connected with the entire player pathway here can be very proud of the efforts they’ve put in to help Noah reach this stage, but more than anything, so can Noah himself.

“He is already raring to go for 2024 and build on what was a superb season for him individually, and we’re excited to see what that combination of motivation and skill can produce!”

Club Statement: Investigation Update

Essex County Cricket Club (Essex CCC) has today received the Katharine Newton KC report into historic allegations of racism.

The Board is fully committed to continuing the work that has already been carried out in creating an inclusive and welcoming club for everyone and will now consider Ms Newton’s report and its recommendations.

As part of this process, the report will be shared immediately with an independent committee appointed by the Club, who have been mandated to inform the Essex CCC Board with a recommended course of action and disciplinary measures, if any, that may need to be taken.

Because of the complex nature of the issue, as well as legal matters that may be involved, the independent committee will complete their work before any further statement is issued. The Club is determined to be fair to all those who have been named in the report.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have been, and will continue to be, kept fully informed of the process being undertaken by the Club.

The Club would like to place on record its thanks to Ms Newton KC for the detailed and thorough process she has undertaken in order to deliver her findings and recommendations.

Essex CCC has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism and remains committed to eradicating any forms of discrimination within cricket. The necessary legal processes are now taking place and a further statement will be issued in due course.
