Onboard with Ambassador’s ‘Cricketing Legends Cruise’

The Club’s Principal Partner, Ambassador Cruise Line hosted another unforgettable Cricketing Legends cruise at the beginning of December.

The trip not only treated guests with scenic stops in Antwerp and Amsterdam but also included the chance to join some legends from the game onboard, including Henry Blofeld, Jonathan Agnew, David Graveney and our very own Graham Gooch.

However, beyond the cricket chat and discussion, the cruise also included a charity raffle saw guests onboard ‘Ambition’ raise £445 for the Essex Cricket Foundation, which supports community initiatives in the county that is home to Ambassador’s port of London Tilbury.

Ambassador and Essex Cricket would like to thank all guests for their generosity.

Walter shines for Brisbane Heat in their latest win

Paul Walter continued to make a name for himself on the big stage by starring for the Brisbane Heat in their latest BBL win over Melbourne Renegades.

In a match pulsating with cricketing fireworks, Paul Walter emerged as the pivotal force in Brisbane Heat’s commanding win over the Renegades at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

It was Walter’s remarkable all-round game that anchored Heat’s clinical victory, recording figures of 3/27 off his four overs.

While Renegades rode high on an explosive half-century Jake Fraser-McGurk’s, Heat faced a stumbling start at 45/3. Walter’s impact wasn’t limited to his exploits with the ball with his blazing cameo of 30 runs off 15 deliveries during the run chase showcased his all-round brilliance, sealing Heat’s triumph in style with 11 balls to spare.

His selection by Heat in the BBL draft has proved to be a masterstroke, as his clever bowling variations and crucial wickets dismantled Renegades’ resistance, notably claiming the dismissals of Aaron Finch and Will Sutherland.

Walter’s new Eagles teammate, Jordan Cox did not feature for the Renegades due to the return of Quinton de Kock, whilst Essex Batting Coach Mick Lewis was also looking on from the opposition dressing room.

Elsewhere, another notable innings was from our 2023 overseas player Beau Webster became the first player in BBL history to take 4+ wickets and score 50+ runs with the bat. Webster, who plays for the Melbourne Stars, struck 59 and took 4/29 from his four overs and came up against Sydney Thunder’s Daniel Sams, who he himself took 4/33 and secured the win for his side with 22*.

Jordan Cox to play in 2024 Pakistan Super League

Jordan Cox has been drafted by Islamabad United ahead of the 2024 Pakistan Super League.

The wicketkeeper-batter, 23, was selected as a Platinum pick, the highest category in the draft, after Islamabad utilised their sole Wild Card in order to move him up from his original Gold category.

Cox is currently playing in Australia’s Big Bash League for Melbourne Renegades, having already finished as leading run-scorer at the Abu Dhabi T10 earlier this winter while representing Bangla Tigers.

He will be joined in Pakistan’s capital by former Essex fast bowler Tymal Mills, alongside fellow Englishmen Alex Hales and Tom Curran.

In addition to Cox’s involvement, Catherine Dalton will make history at next year’s tournament as the fast bowling coach of Multan Sultans.

Dalton’s appointment in October made her the first female PSL coach, as well as the first female fast bowling coach of any professional men’s team.

The 2024 Pakistan Super League will begin on 13 February, with Dalton’s Sultans facing Lahore Qalandars, before Cox’s first game comes on 16 February as Islamabad take on Karachi Kings.

The final is scheduled to take place on 09 March in Lahore.

Essex Cricket and Flicx UK announce partnership

Essex Cricket, Flicx UK, and Eclipse Cricket Consultancy have joined forces in a partnership designed to support the growth of cricket in state schools and the wider development of cricket facilities across the county.

Designed for schools who do not have access to fine turf cricket pitches, the 2G Flicx Pitch allows these schools to develop a cricket programme with its versatility to perform on various undersurfaces.

These include grass fields, playgrounds, sand-dressed AstroTurf, indoor sports halls, tennis courts and 3G rubber crumb, among others, and the result is a transformation of these surfaces into being more suitable for cricket, while also making the game look and feel much more authentic to pupils.

As part of the partnership, Flicx UK will provide a discounted pitch bundle to participating schools as well as rolling out pitches for finals days of school competitions.

This will allow Essex Cricket in the Community and Eclipse to host multiple simultaneous games at venues such as The Cloud County Ground and Billericay CC, while also providing other activations to enhance the cricketing experience.

Speaking about the partnership, Kate Costin from Flicx UK said: “This partnership truly aligns with our values at Flicx to create more opportunities for more people to play cricket.

“We are fully committed to supporting and helping Paul and Dan to build on the fantastic competition structure that is in place in Essex and am sure that the 2G Flicx Pitch will further enhance pupils’ enjoyment of the game.

“Schools who invest in a 2G Flicx Pitch also can attract facility hire income from local clubs and look to develop a relationship to support their pupils to develop a lifelong love of the game.”

Eclipse Consultancy owner and Director of Cricket, Paul Davidge, added: “Many schools entering really struggle with suitable facilities to host cricket so the portability and flexibility of the great Flicx solution mean it will be a fantastic product for schools to invest in to take their cricket programmes to the next level.

“I have also seen, with the growth of cricket in independent schools and clubs, that the pressure on turf wickets is high so the ability to roll out Flicx Pitches on the outfield is a great way to increase space for matches and training.”

Dan Feist at Essex Cricket in the Community, said: “At Essex we have a strong history of state school cricket with currently over 50% of the pathway having attended state school. It’s great to have Flicx on board to enhance the player experience at finals days and allow us to grow the game further in these schools.

“Creating an offer that is not just exciting for the pupils, but also engages teachers by creating a format that fits in with the school timetable, is absolutely the right thing for us to do.

“Together with Flicx, we also have an innovative way in which sponsors can support the development of cricket in state schools with logo branding on the bright, bold, bespoke pitches that can pave the way for girls and boys to develop a passion for cricket in all schools.”

“Having Flicx attend and support the festivals will also enhance the experience we can offer pupils which will only help to grow the game further. There are so many opportunities for schools and clubs alike to grow the game with 2G Flicx Pitches”.

Sajid Patel wins national Lifetime Achievement Award

Leytonstone Cricket Club’s Sajid Patel has been recognised for his contributions to the recreational game over the last 25 years with the awarding of a national Lifetime Achievement Award from the ECB.

Sajid has helped to grow participation in the region and take community cricket to new audiences since starting his journey in 1998, and has also been the heart of Leytonstone CC for many years.

He began his involvement in Leytonstone, then moved into Waltham Forest, Newham, and Redbridge where he reached out to children and young people through outreach and engagement work using cricket as a theme.

In 2002, Sajid started a league in West Ham Park that engaged a number of new players, and fast forward to 2010 he was involved in changing the landscape of the game, alongside childhood friend Nahed Patel. Together they set up the very first white-ball and coloured clothing league in the region, which was very successful.

In 2012, Sajid helped to establish and launch the National Cricket League (NCL), which has grown to now include 76 clubs/teams competing across nine divisions on Sundays, with the majority of the fixtures being played in Essex and East London.

He is a complete all-rounder in that he is a qualified umpire, cricket Coach, and an accomplished administrator of league cricket. He is a true legend in the Leytonstone ranks and a servant to the game of cricket in the wider Essex region as a volunteer.
