The Cloud County Ground to host two Middlesex T20s in 2024

The Cloud County Ground will host two of Middlesex’s home Vitality Blast matches in 2024.

Lord’s will remain Middlesex’s main ground, hosting four of their seven home South Group matches, leaving three to be played at other venues.

In recent seasons, both Radlett Cricket Club and Merchant Taylors’ School have been Middlesex’s preferred home out-grounds, however in 2024 the decision has been taken to play two matches at Chelmsford.

Fixture informations will be revealed in line with the full fixture announcement at 10am on Thursday.

Ticket information for the two Chelmsford fixtures will be announced in due course.

Speaking of today’s announcement, Essex Chief Executive Officer, John Stephenson, commented:

“This is a fast-moving initiative, but we believe it will be of mutual benefit to both counties as it allows the Club to grow our revenue at a challenging time and make best use of our primary asset, the ground.”

“It was excellent to hear that the Middlesex squad and staff are looking forward to playing at Chelmsford, and we are excited to welcome them here for two Vitality Blast fixtures next year.”

Middlesex Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cornish, added:

“We have gone to lengths to be transparent and open with our members when discussing the financial position the Club is in, and moving forwards we need to continue to take every step we can to ensure we remain rigorous in our control of the Club’s costs.

“The cost of setting up the infrastructure of an out-ground venue is a significant liability the Club has historically had to factor into our financial model every year – increasingly so in recent seasons with the enhancements we have made to the Member experience at out-ground matches.

“As we continue to scrutinise every cost the Club incurs, out-ground set-up costs stand out as an area which we could make a significant positive impact on.

“We have, as a result, been in discussion with our friends at Essex, who have been very receptive to the idea of hosting us at The Cloud County Ground for two of our Blast matches this year.

“For Middlesex, this represents an opportunity for us to make a significant financial uplift to the Club, which is something that we simply cannot ignore, and with Chelmsford just over 20 minutes away on the train out of Stratford station, we felt it provided a sensible solution.

“Equally importantly, we have consulted with the professional playing group on this decision, who were unanimous in their support, given their desire to play more cricket at first-class venues, with first-class facilities available to them.

“All at Middlesex, the players and the staff, along with all at Essex, are excited about what this opportunity represents and we are looking forward to Middlesex competing at The Cloud County Ground this summer.

“Our thanks go to our Members and our supporters for their understanding of this venue choice and hope you appreciate the sound financial reasons for the decision. Whilst this may seem like a radical decision, it is one that we need to make to ensure that Middlesex gets back on a more stable financial footing.”

Changes to Regulations and Playing Conditions approved for 2024

Following the announcement of Essex’s 2024 fixtures, a number of changes in Regulations and Playing Conditions have been approved for next summer.

The changes have been made following recommendations from the Cricket Advisory Group, which includes current men’s and women’s Directors of Cricket, and players from the men’s county and women’s regional teams.

Representatives from the Professional Cricketers’ Association, Head Grounds Managers, and officials also make up the CAG.

The CAG forms its recommendations following discussion and analysis of domestic cricket, which are then sent to the ECB’s Professional Game Committee to be considered for approval.

County Championship will return to awarding eight points for a drawn match

A drawn match in the 2024 County Championship will be rewarded with eight points for each county, which is an increase from the five awarded last season.

The CAG debated whether last season’s change to five points for a draw, allied to the change in batting bonus points, had achieved what it set out to do, which was to encourage teams to bat long yet still incentivise a win.

It was felt that the two changes had perhaps worked against one another and therefore the draw points should return to eight, but that batting points remain the same (250-450 run range), which would still incentivise the preparation of good pitches.

Kookaburra ball use expanded to four County Championship matches

Following the two-round trial of the Kookaburra ball in the County Championship last season, the PGC approved a recommendation to increase the use of the Kookaburra to four rounds next summer.

The specific rounds in which the Kookaburra ball will be used are still to be determined, but the ECB have confirmed that the matches will happen in two separate consecutive rounds of two matches each.

The first two rounds are set to occur in the early part of the season (April-May) when all 18 counties are playing.

The second two rounds are set to be staged in the latter part of the season (August-September), again when all 18 counties are playing, but will not be staged in the final two rounds.

2024 will provide more opportunity to assess and interrogate data collected for use of the Kookaburra ball in the County Championship, and how that affects performance and other skills – such as reverse swing and spin – in domestic four-day cricket in England and Wales.

The optional use of hybrid pitches in the County Championship on a one-year trial

The use of hybrid pitches will be permitted in the County Championship next season as part of a one-year trial.

The use of hybrid pitches has, until now, been limited to white-ball cricket, though the one-year trial will assess the value of using hybrid pitches in multi-day cricket, with counties having the option whether to use hybrid pitches or not through the season.

Removal of ‘bowl-outs’ to determine the winner of a white-ball final should a match not be constituted

In men’s and women’s white-ball competitions – namely, the Vitality Blast, Charlotte Edwards Cup, Metro Bank One-Day Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy – if a final cannot be constituted then the trophy will be shared rather than a ‘bowl-out’ being used to decide a winner.

Each white-ball knockout match will continue to have a reserve day in place to mitigate against a match not being constituted, with the CAG determining that a ‘bowl-out’ was an unsatisfactory way to determine the winner of a final.

ECB Association of Cricket Officials Courses

The roles of the officials are among the most important in cricket, where umpiring requires a keen eye for detail and a reputation for fairness, and scoring requires great concentration.

New umpires and scorers are always required at recreational level, so if giving something back to cricket in this way appeals to you, this page has the details of courses that will allow you to learn either of those roles.

In Essex, we run a number of courses for umpires and scorers to help people understand more about the roles, in addition to the ECB-run courses that provide opportunities to move on to higher levels.

Read on for how you can qualify yourself for the best seat in the house…

Use the links below to book onto an Umpiring or Scoring Course:

ECB Umpiring Course

Learning with the ECB Association of Cricket Officials is for people who are interested in umpiring at higher levels, and has a defined pathway that clearly sets out the opportunities for you to progress up the ranks in either role.

The below course is designed to give new umpires the key skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket, and no prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required before attending any of the courses.

The only pre-requisite to attending the below course is being a minimum of 14 years old.

Candidates will gain ECB accreditation and free membership of ECB Association of Cricket Officials (ECB ACO) for a year, with the benefit of insurance when umpiring and access to up to date information on umpiring and scoring.

Additionally, when joining the ECB ACO, people will automatically become a member of the Essex ACO which will give access to further training and support.

Date Time Venue Booking Details
13 October 2024 (Female Only) 09:45 – 16:45 Leyton Cricket Hub, Leyton

Please note: Residents of Essex, as well as the London Boroughs of Havering, Redbridge, Newham, Waltham Forest, and Barking & Dagenham can obtain a £30 discount on the above course. The discount has to be applied at the time of booking and the code can be obtained by emailing [email protected].

Essex Certified Umpiring Courses

In addition to the ECB courses, the Essex ACO also runs local courses for those more interested in gaining a grounding to umpire matches within the local community.

The Part 1 Introduction Course is aimed at beginners and will provide the skills needed to umpire Junior School Age softball cricket. It covers:
• Standing at Bowler’s and Striker’s End
• Wides
• No Balls (front foot, over waist height, over head height)
• Common Signals (4, 6, out, wide, no ball, bye, leg bye)
• Main Methods of Dismissal (bowled, caught, run out, stumped, hit wicket)

The Part 2 Intermediate Course develops the skills from Part 1, so that people are confident to umpire teenage hard ball cricket. It covers:
• Signalling (a recap of those learned on Part 1, plus short run, revoking the last signal, penalty runs, and dead ball)
• Umpire’s Equipment
• ECB Directives (age-related restrictions)
• No balls (recap, plus ball bouncing more than once, ball rolling, ball coming to rest, limitation of leg side fielders, bowler breaking wicket in delivery stride, and fielder encroaching or intercepting delivery)
• Wides (recap, plus changes to the law regarding batter’s movement)
• Scoring runs (batter’s glove, byes, leg byes, and when runs can be scored)
• Methods of dismissal (recap, plus LBW and run-out of the non-striker)
• Counting balls in the over and signals to colleague around this

You are able to attend the Part 2 course without having attended Part 1.

Please use the [email protected] email address if you are interested in attending any of the Essex certified courses or belong to a club who would like to host a course.

There are currently no Essex ACO-certified umpiring courses open for booking.

Please check back in the future, as new courses are regularly added.

Anthony McGrath: Six of the Best

On 20 November 2017, Anthony McGrath was appointed Head Coach of Essex, taking over the reins from his former boss, and fellow Yorkshireman, Chris Silverwood.

In the ensuing years, the Eagles have won three trophies, including a historic County Championship-Vitality Blast double in 2019.

Now, on the sixth anniversary of Mags’ appointment, this is a look back at an over of his most memorable moments at the Essex helm.

1) County Champions Again, 2019

Having already lifted the Championship trophy as part of Silverwood’s staff in 2017, the pupil became the master two years later as McGrath led Essex to another title.

Simon Harmer did what he does best to lead the way in the wicket-taking charts with 83, while Alastair Cook hit 913 runs as the Eagles finished 11 points clear of Somerset at the top of the tree.

Just 48 hours after also winning the Vitality Blast, Essex headed to Taunton for a crucial showdown that would decide the destination of the trophy, and they dug in for a crucial draw to bring it back to Chelmsford.

2) Record Breakers, 2022

On a glorious evening in July last year, the Eagles put Glamorgan to the sword in racking up their highest-ever T20 score, which was at the time, also the fourth-highest ever seen in the domestic English competition.

A total of 43 boundaries were hit in the Essex innings, 19 of which were sixes, as the Welsh outfit wilted, with four of their five bowlers going at more than ten per over and every home batter striking at a rate of at least 160.

In response, captain Sam Northeast put up a valiant fight with an unbeaten 97 from 56 balls, but no one was able to match the Eagles’ fireworks as the visitors finished well short on 185-7 to give Essex victory by 69 runs.

3) Vitality Blast Triumph, 2019

Three years before that, McGrath masterminded the first part of the famed double as his side beat Worcestershire in the 2019 Vitality Blast final to be crowned short-format kings of England for the first time.

Having seen off Finals Day debutants Derbyshire Falcons in the semi-final by 34 runs, with Cameron Delport hitting 55 and Simon Harmer snaring 4/19, a date with destiny was set for the evening.

The Rapids, who were defending champions, set a target of 145/9, which Essex overhauled in thrilling fashion as Harmer hit the winning four off the very last ball of the chase, to spark manic celebrations in Birmingham.

4) Last-Ball Six, 2023

Following that win, it would be another four years until the Eagles again qualified for the T20 knockout stages, but this year, they did just that in circumstances of barely-believable drama.

Chasing 197 and with three needed off one ball, Feroze Khushi hit Sean Abbott towards Chris Jordan, and though he took a catch, he was unable to stop, and an attempted throw to Jamie Overton only palmed it over the rope.

The most crucial two points were in the bag, and with Kent then losing to Somerset in the day’s evening clash, the Eagles’ progress to the last eight, having gone right down to the wire, was secured.

5) Lifting The Bob Willis Trophy, 2020

In the strangest of years, the most unusual of competitions was born, as the severely-shortened 2020 season saw the creation of the Bob Willis Trophy.

Although Essex were officially unable to defend their 2019 Championship title, they again saw off Somerset, this time in the final at Lord’s, to retain their status as the best red-ball side in the country.

The rain-affected match did end in a draw, but by virtue of having scored more first-innings runs – 337 to Somerset’s 301 – it was McGrath’s Eagles that lifted another trophy.

6) Spoiling The Champions’ Party, 2018

When Essex headed to the Oval on the last game of the 2018 season, Surrey were champions-elect and, up to that point, unbeaten all season.

However, Essex ensured their achievement from the previous year of going through the entire year without defeat would remain unmatched, as Tom Westley’s first-innings 134 set up a thrilling one-wicket win.

Chasing a target of, funnily enough, 134 in the fourth innings after a topsy-turvy four days, Ryan ten Doeschate’s counter-attacking unbeaten 53 saw Essex sneak over the line and put a dent in the Brown Caps’ celebrations.

Essex set for Abu Dhabi pre-season tour

Essex are set to fly to Abu Dhabi in March 2024 for a two-week pre-season tour.

Taking place just two weeks prior to the start of the 2024 summer, the Eagles will be joined by Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire, and will spend two weeks in the UAE capital from 11th March.

Alongside a team representing Abu Dhabi, the five counties will participate in a three-day T20 festival before each playing a two-day red-ball match, all taking place at the Zayed Cricket Academy complex.

The tour will be the first opportunity for the entire Essex first-team group to train and play together after a long winter, with several players returning from off-season assignments across the globe.

It will also be the first time new signing Jordan Cox will pad up for the Eagles, in a city where March temperatures average around 25°C.

Members and fans wishing to watch Anthony McGrath’s side in action in the sunnier climes before the season begins in earnest can book their trips through Sporta Tours.

Nick Browne extends Essex contract

Essex Cricket is pleased to announce that long-serving batter Nick Browne has signed a new contract that extends his association with the Club until the end of the 2024 season.

Born in Leytonstone, Browne has represented the Eagles since 2013, playing 178 games and scoring almost 8,500 runs across all formats.

Across his time in Essex colours, he has been most prolific in first-class cricket, hitting over 7,500 runs at an average of 35.87.

The 32-year-old has hit 31 half-centuries and 19 hundreds in the format, as well as striking three List A fifties, and has a career top score of 255 against Derbyshire in May 2016.

Having struck three further scores above 200 since, Browne also has the distinction of being joint-second on the list of double-century makers in Essex history, level with Sonny Avery.

He was awarded his county cap in 2015, and has won five trophies with Essex, including the Club’s first County Championship title for 25 years in 2017, a year in which he scored over 1,100 runs.

Upon extending his Essex career into a second decade, Browne said: “It’s fantastic to stay here at Chelmsford, a place that has given me a wonderful career and some amazing memories.

“I was born locally, and it means a huge amount to me to be able to represent the region where I grew up and developed both personally and professionally.”

“I look forward to contributing to winning more trophies for the Essex fans and Members!”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “I’m really pleased we’ve managed to keep Nick at Essex for at least another year.

“We’ve been keen to secure the futures of our most promising young players, but a key ingredient of a winning team is getting the blend of youth and experience just right.

“Nick brings the latter in spades, and he’s a quality option at the top of the order as well as being a great character to have in the dressing room.”
