Match Highlights

Close of Play Report

Essex commenced their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign at The Cloudfm County Ground with a 25 run victory over Hampshire.

A superb 93 from Tom Westley supported by an unbeaten 72 by Ashar Zaidi fashioned an Essex total of 304 for 7 after they had been put into bat.

In reply, the visitors were threatening to meet the challenge but the loss of Liam Dawson and George Bailey to successive deliveries brought the Eagles right back into the game and they eventually prevailed with Neil Wagner taking 4 for 41.

Westley produced a gem of an innings with immaculate timing and it took a brilliant one-handed catch by Bailey at mid-wicket to deny him a deserved hundred.

Whilst at the crease, he oversaw the addition of 163 runs after opener Nick Browne had fallen to the third ball of the innings. Alastair Cook contributed 39 and Varun Chopra scored 26 before Westley was dismissed to leave the Eagles 163 for 4.

Typically, it was Ashar Zaidi who added the momentum to the innings. He arrived in the middle with the score on 195 for 6 and bludgeoned his way to 4 sixes and 6 fours in a knock spanning just 40 deliveries.

With Simon Harmer, 61 runs were accrued from the final 5 overs to set a decent total for the Eagles attack to defend.

As in the Essex innings, the South Coast county lost their first wicket without a run on the board when Michael Carberry was bowled by Wagner. A second wicket fell 36 runs later before James Vince and Bailey dispelled the critical start with a stand worth 91 in 17 overs. A mistimed drive on 68 cost Vince his wicket when he offered Ravi Bopara a return catch.

Bailey and Dawson continued to pose a threat with a half-century stand in under 8 overs but Dawson was then run out for 27 by a direct throw from Nick Browne whilst Bailey went immediately afterwards for 63 when he edged Wagner to the wicket-keeper.

Sean Ervine and Lewis McManus kept their side in the hunt with a 60 run stand in 11 overs but Ryan ten Doeschate ended their threat with a run out off his own bowling to remove Ervine for 31.

That dismissal left Hampshire 252 for 7 with just under 5 overs to go but McManus holed out to Matt Quinn in the deep for 33, Gareth Berg was caught and bowled by ten Doeschate before Wagner returned to polish off the innings with two wickets in successive deliveries.

The triumphant Eagles now head to The Oval to meet Surrey on Tuesday.

Interval Report

Substantial innings by Tom Westley and Ashar Zaidi ensured a challenging target for Hampshire as the Eagles reached 304 for 7 at the conclusion of their 50 overs.

Westley top-scored with 93 whilst Zaidi contributed a typically aggressive innings and was unbeaten on 72 that spanned just 40 balls and included 4 sixes and 6 fours.

The home side, who were put into bat, lost Nick Browne to the third delivery of their innings when the left-hander lost his off stump when attempting to drive Reece Topley.

However, Westley and Alastair Cook posted a century stand before Cook was bowled by Liam Dawson for 39 when he stepped back seeking to cover drive.

Westley provided a number of splendidly well-timed strokes reaching his half-century from 45 balls with the assistance of 8 boundaries and continued to dominate the Hampshire bowling.

He was joined by Varun Chopra and the pair kept the momentum going at a good rate during a third wicket partnership worth 60 in 11 overs before both departed on the space of 5 deliveries. Chopra was caught for 26 and then Westley’s fine innings came to a close when he was brilliantly caught one-handed by George Bailey at mid-wicket.

That left the Eagles 163 for 4 which became 195 for 6 with the departure of Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate for 10 and 2 respectively.

It was the arrival of the enterprising Zaidi though that galvanised the innings. He joined Adam Wheater in a partnership worth 42 in 7 overs. Zaidi soon cleared the ropes when facing leg-spinner Mason Crane in an over that cost 14 runs and although Wheater went shortly afterwards for 30, Zaidi continued his powerful onslaught.

He lifted a delivery from Sean Ervine over the mid-wicket ropes to bring the total past 250 in the 46th over and then posted his half-century with a 6 over third man in an over from Gareth Berg that cost 14 runs.

Topley went for 15 runs off his final over that included successive wides, the second of which beat the keeper and raced to the leg-side boundary. With one over remaining, the score was 293 for 7 but Simon Harmer and Zaidi took the total past 300 with Harmer, who signed a two-year contract extension during the break between innings, finished 17 not out.

Simon Harmer signs a two-year contract extension

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce South African International spinner Simon Harmer has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the Club until the end of the 2019 season.

Having fitted into the Club seamlessly both on and off the pitch since his arrival in March, both parties had no hesitation in extending the 28-year-old’s contract.

Impressing with both disciplines in the Specsavers County Championship, Harmer has taken 9 wickets and helped saved two draws against Lancashire and Middlesex with the bat.

Chris Silverwood, Essex Cricket Head Coach, is thrilled to see Harmer extend his contract and said: “Simon has fitted into the squad brilliantly both on and off the pitch. His capabilities with bat and ball are there for all to see and he has also been an excellent influence on our younger players passing on his experience.

“Hopefully as the pitches get harder and drier across the course of the summer, we will see Simon come to the fore and make match-winning contributions regularly.”

All-rounder Harmer did not have to think twice about signing a new contract and added: “Ever since I linked up with the squad in Dubai, everything has been great. Everyone at the Club has made me feel welcome, so I had no hesitation in committing my future to Essex.

“I see my long-term future in England and I can’t envisage a better place to do it than here in Chelmsford.”

Match Preview | Essex Eagles v Hampshire

Essex take a diversion from red-ball cricket for the next three weeks as they concentrate on the Royal London One-Day Cup competition. During this period, the Eagles will play all eight matches in the South Group, starting with a visit from Hampshire to The Cloudfm County Ground on Sunday with play scheduled to start at 11am.

The Eagles have named a 14-man squad for the opening encounter that includes former England Test captain Alastair Cook, plus fit-again paceman Matt Quinn.

Head Coach, Chris Silverwood admits that he is spoilt for choice when it comes to naming the starting line-up.  “There is real healthy competition for places but it’s a nice headache to have,” he said.

“It’s going to be a real tough decision to decide who is left out on Sunday but as I’ve said before, it’s a long season and everyone will get their chance at some stage.

“Personally, I’m pleased that the 50-over matches are being played in a block because it’s a lot easier to channel the attention of the players into the format. “We’ve had a tough three weeks of very hard Championship cricket and I think the boys have done really well. If someone had said to me at the start of the season that we’d have a win and two draws from our first three games, I would have been over the moon. All credit to the players for achieving that.

“Now we have to re-focus on the One-Day Cup. The first challenge at this stage is to reach the quarter-finals but we won’t look too far ahead. It’s an old cliché but we will take each game as it comes and give it our best shot and see where that takes us.

“We will treat every game as a must-win match and give it everything we’ve got.”

Team selection will be made harder for the former England, Yorkshire and Middlesex bowler with the return of New Zealand–born Quinn who suffered a back problem in 2016 that forced him to miss out on the last two months of the season.  Now after months of re-assessment of the injury and subsequent rehabilitation, the 24 year-old is ready to resume his career – to the delight of the Eagles Head Coach.

“We know that he is a really good bowler and he’s worked really hard to get to this point,” he stated. “He’s put in some good shifts in the second team and so it’s good to have him back to bolster our pace attack.”

Opponents Hampshire have enjoyed the benefit of a match in this year’s competition having beaten Kent Spitfires at Canterbury by six-wickets on Thursday.

Tom Alsop hit an unbeaten 112, whilst Reece Topley claimed three wickets and Sunday’s match represents the opportunity of a return visit to Chelmsford for the fast bowler. Now 23 years of age, the 6’7” tall Topley who progressed through the Academy at Chelmsford, left Essex at the end of the 2015 season.

Other player links between the two current squads involve batsman/wicket-keeper Adam Wheater and all-rounder Liam Dawson. The latter spent a brief period on-loan with Essex in 2014 whilst Wheater, who started his career with Essex in 2008, left in 2013 to link with the South Coast county.

He returned to his native roots towards the end of last season having signed a two-year deal until the end of the 2018 campaign.

Chopra and Foster shine as 2s beat Middlesex

Varun Chopra and James Foster led Essex Second XI to a comprehensive 8-wicket victory against Middlesex at Radlett yesterday.

In a rain-affected match Chopra scored an unbeaten 109 and Foster contributed 67 not out off 39 balls to reach Essex’s target of 237.

Having won the toss, Middlesex opted to bat and struggled to adapt to the regular rain intervals. Nick Compton, returning from a recent shoulder injury, opened for the hosts scoring 29 before being caught off Matt Dixon.

George Scott held the innings together with exactly 100 but nobody could support him as Middlesex stumbled to 229 for 9. Dixon picked up three wickets, while Callum Taylor and Matt Quinn continued their fine form with two wickets apiece.

Chopra led the charge in response, batting all the way through the innings. He lost Paul Walter early to a fine delivery from Tim Murtagh, before Taylor backed up his recent run-scoring exploits with another 50.

Foster then joined Chopra scoring at a strike-rate of 172 as Essex cruised to their victory target.

Essex Cricket and Newham Council unveil partnership to boost cricket across the borough

A prestigious partnership to help make Newham the cricket capital of East London by 2020 was launched on Friday 21 April by Newham Council and Essex Cricket.

The council and club have teamed up to build on the work already being undertaken across the borough with a wide range partners to promote and grow the sport in Essex, Newham, and the rest of East London.

The partnership will help develop new facilities and activities in Newham to encourage even more people to take up the game and help develop the game in the borough.

The work will help inspire young people to follow in the footsteps of local cricketing stars like England and Essex all-rounder Ravi Bopara, from Forest Gate, and Saba Nasim, who took up cricket while at Plashet School in East Ham. She received the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year Honours this year for her commitment to coaching women and girls in cricket.

It is also hoped the partnership will lead to the development of a cricket club from Newham that is able to compete in the Shepherd Neame Essex Cricket League in the future.

Under the three-year agreement Essex Cricket will help the council promote the sport through attending a range of events including the Mayor’s Newham Show in July and hosting coaching sessions in schools and colleges.

The club will also give Newham residents the chance of seeing top class cricket by providing hundreds of free tickets to championship and one day games at their Chelmsford ground. Information on how to apply for these tickets will be published in the Newham Mag.

Cricket is already popular in Newham with high levels of women playing the game, and a number of well-established cricket clubs producing some promising young players.

To help build on this strong foundation, and potentially help unearth fresh talent for Essex Cricket, Newham Council will also enhance the borough’s cricket facilities including:

  • developing two ‘hub’ clubs in the borough that could support ten adult and 20 junior teams. A ‘hub’ club for women and girls will also be established with the aim of encouraging at least 50 people to get involved.
  • training around 50 residents a year to help coach and encourage people to play cricket.
  • setting up an annual Newham Cricket Festival.

The partnership has been endorsed by a number of the stars of the current Essex Cricket squad.

Ravi Bopara said: “Partnerships like these are vital to keep our great game developing and improving. With such a large catchment area this partnership will create a link that will hopefully see future Essex and England stars making a career in professional cricket. I am proud to fly the flag and hope others will follow the same path as myself and achieve their dreams.”

Ashar Zaidi said: “Having already attended events and coaching sessions in Newham I have seen first-hand the passion for the game and quality of cricket being produced. If we can work in partnership and continue to produce the next generation of men’s and women’s cricketers that can only be a good thing. I see this partnership as pivotal in achieving that and I am delighted it has been secured.”

It is hoped the partnership will help lead to young people from Newham making up ten per cent of Essex Cricket’s performance squads by 2020.

Cabinet Member for Sports and Leisure Councillor Forhad Hussain said: “I am delighted we have agreed this partnership with Essex Cricket which will only help our growing cricket community in the borough to flourish. We have huge ambitions for the sport in Newham as we want to make it the place in East London synonymous with cricket. This agreement helps lay the foundations to achieve this.

“Cricket is a game anyone can play and get involved in. It is a fantastic way of bringing people together and playing sport, which then helps towards them leading longer and healthier lives. This partnership will not only help encourage and support  more people to take up the sport but also give our residents the chance to see top quality competition at Essex Cricket.”

Essex County Cricket Club Chairman, John Faragher, said: “This partnership with Newham Council represents an exciting opportunity for the further development and expansion of cricket in the region. It also supports the council’s ambitious plans for Newham to be the centre of cricket in East London.

“It will encourage more people to become actively involved with cricket, and will provide the foundations that will allow the next generation of men’s and ladies cricket to flourish.”

Quinn edges closer to first-team return after 4-wicket haul for Seconds

Kiwi paceman Matt Quinn has edged closer to the first-team fold after proving his fitness and form following a long injury lay-off.

Quinn suffered a back injury in July last year ruling him out of the rest of the 2016 season and following lengthy rehab work over the winter he is now ready to return.

Three games for the Second team have followed, including Monday’s Trophy match against Sussex Seconds at Billericay.

Sussex ran out 2-wicket Duckworth-Lewis victors but Quinn and Callum Taylor shined to further strengthen their first-team claims.

Having been put into bat under cloud cover, Essex lost early wickets and reached 211 all out largely thanks to 46 from Taylor.

Essex started well with the ball against a first-team heavy Sussex team reducing them to 94-6 thanks to four wickets from Quinn.

Michael Burgess and Danny Briggs helped the visitors recover though with 62 and 70 apiece helping Sussex to a two-wicket victory.

MATCH PREVIEW | Middlesex v Essex

Essex travel to the Home of Cricket for the third Specsavers County Championship match of the 2017 season where they meet Middlesex at Lord’s.

Having beaten last year’s competition runners-up, Somerset, by a stunning 8-wicket margin, Essex now turn attentions to 2016 Champions Middlesex.

The visitors have named a 13-man squad with paceman Matt Quinn returning from a long injury lay-off and replacing all-rounder Ashar Zaidi in the group that travelled to Taunton.

Essex Head Coach Chris Silverwood admits that he is satisfied in the manner his squad have adjusted to life back in the top-flight of domestic cricket.

“So far, so good although it’s early days of course,” he said. “We knew it would be a challenge and there was obviously a steep learning curve in our first match with Lancashire. Then there was a bit of a dog-fight with Somerset but in both matches, we scored the runs in the second innings, firstly to save the Lancashire match and then to pull off a superb win against Somerset.

“Although we needed to score the highest total of the match to win at Taunton, we weren’t fazed by the prospect. We did have a plan in how to go about achieving victory and we said if one batsman gets in, then the rest can bat around him and we can build partnerships and see what happens. It worked brilliantly.

“It shows what character we do have within the group and I think it sends out a strong message that we are here in Division One to make our presence felt. You can see the confidence in the squad and in individual players plus the good thing is that there is genuine competition for places in the starting line-up.

“We are really looking forward to playing at Lord’s, it is a fantastic place to play cricket. Obviously Middlesex are going to be really tough opposition but that’s what Division One cricket is all about and we are ready to meet the next challenge in front of us.”

Of the last eight Championship contests between the two sides played at Lord’s, five have ended in stalemate with Middlesex recording two wins and Essex one victory.

Essex will again have Alastair Cook available. The England Test opener played a pivotal part in the win against Somerset with a century in the second innings to follow his fifty in his first visit to the crease.  He has averaged 89.4 in the County Championship since the start of last season spanning 13 innings.
