Championship Success Celebrated at Civic Reception

On Wednesday (19 April), the Essex squad and coaching staff were invited by Colchester Borough Council to the Town Hall in Colchester for a Civic Reception in recognition of the Division Two Championship success last season.

Welcomed by Mayor Julie Young, Chief Executive Derek Bowden and Head Coach Chris Silverwood both gave speeches to the guests and it was a chance to celebrate not only Essex Cricket’s success, but also sport across Colchester with representatives from a number of other Clubs and businesses in attendance, such as Colchester United FC.

Chris Silverwood said, “It’s great that the Club’s achievements from last season have been recognised in this way and we thank the Mayor and Colchester Borough Council for putting on the Civic Reception for us.

“The team can be very proud of what they did in 2016 as a lot of planning and hardwork went into winning the trophy, so it’s good that the players can come and meet people around the county to share the success.

“We’ve had a good start to the season so hopefully we can bring some more silverware back home to the county in the times ahead!”

Essex vote against proposed new T20 competition

The Executive Board of Essex County Cricket Club has, following an extensive consultation with the Committee, the Members, and representatives of the ECB, decided it is unable to support the proposed changes to the articles of Association of the ECB.

The proposed changes require the stakeholders to approve the removal of the clause which allows all 18 First Class counties to participate in all ECB competitions, including the new T20.

Essex County Cricket Club Chairman, John Faragher said, “We do not support the changes to the Articles of Association and consequently the proposed new T20 competition. It is essential that the County Championship, domestic 50-over and T20 competitions are encouraged to grow, and they must be protected.

“We recognise and support the Cricket Unleashed Strategy and indeed Essex County Cricket Club has an enviable record in producing England players and Captains. We are focused on expanding cricket in Essex, East Anglia and East London, ensuring there are opportunities for all age and ability groups, male and female to be actively involved in the game.

“We believe that as a result of the proposed changes, these opportunities will be reduced, that our income overall will suffer and the First Class game will be diminished, in contradiction to the ECB’s objective which is to grow the game in this country – an objective that is unlikely to be advanced by a competition which would exclude large areas of the country from any involvement in it.”

Day Three in Taunton marked a memorable day in the season, with Essex clinching an opening victory in Division One of the Specsavers County Championship.

With Nick Browne departing for 35, Cook and Westley recorded the highest partnership of the match which saw the batsman score a century and half century, respectively.

Cook was later out for 110 and Westley, joined by Dan Lawrence (11) hit a boundary to reach 86* and clinch the win for Essex. Tom spoke to Essex Cricket TV to talk about a fine day’s work for the batsmen.

It was a memorable day for overseas star, Neil Wagner as he enjoyed a very good day’s work in an Essex shirt on Day Two against Somerset.

After a difficult morning for the batsmen, it was the bowling attack who had to try and mount the pressure on the home side in the second innings. Upstep Wagner who took 6-48 off 12.2 overs to give Essex a glimmer of hope and set up a run chase on the final day at Taunton.
