WATCH | Silverwood looks ahead to Semi-Final clash

Essex Eagles capped off a fine performance in the group stage of the Royal London One-Day Cup by defeating Kent Spitfires by 57 runs (D/L), however the result was relatively unimportant after already securing top spot in the South Group earlier in the day.

A single point was required going into the final match but after Somerset’s game against Middlesex was abandoned due to rain for most of the day at Lord’s, it meant the knockout stage fixtures were all settled by the interval at Canterbury.

Chris Silverwood spoke to Essex Cricket TV to give his immediate thoughts after the draw had been made on Sky Sports.

Essex Eagles will face Somerset or Nottinghamshire in the Semi-Finals, with the fixture taking place on Friday 16 June at The Cloudfm County Ground. Play will begin at 1:30pm and information on when you can purchase tickets will be available on Thursday (18 May) via www.https://http://essexcricket.org.uk/.

Close of Play Report | Essex Eagles reeled off a seventh victory in eight Royal London One-Day Cup matches when they beat Kent Spitfires by 57 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method.

The Eagles had posted 307 for 6 after skipper Ryan ten Doeschate lost the toss for the seventh time in the competition this season but his side batted with authority and good sense to post their fourth total of 300 plus in 50-overs cricket this year.

The win ensured that Essex Eagles finished three points clear at the top of the South Group to set up a home semi-final with either Somerset or Nottinghamshire.

Varun Chopra top-scored with 83, Alastair Cook contributed his fifth half-century in the competition this season – two of which he turned into hundreds. Ravi Bopara contributed 49 whilst Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley scored thirties.

Openers Chopra and Cook put on 95 in 19 overs before being parted when Cook was dismissed for 54 having reached a run-a-ball half-century that included 8 boundaries.

Chopra continued to play stylishly and with excellent timing. His half-century arrived for 76 balls with 7 fours and he had added four more boundaries to his tally before he was dismissed when he chopped the ball onto his stumps.

Westley made 35 in a second wicket stand worth 73 whilst Bopara and Lawrence added 62 in 9 overs before Lawrence went for 32 but Bopara continued in fine manner.

Picking off the bowling with contemptuous ease, he drove and cut cleanly and the only surprise was his downfall when within one run of his half-century.

He had been joined by Ashar Zaidi in a stand that raised the temp further with 38 in four overs before Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster were left to hoist the total above and beyond 300 in the final pickings.

Rain had been predicted to arrive at 6.30pm and duly arrived on schedule but The Eagles had been in total control by the time the umpires called off proceedings with Kent having slid to 50 for 3 at the end of 11 overs.

Ashar Zaidi took two wickets, the first in his first over when he removed Sam Northeast for 3 whose intended slog cost him his middle stump. Then in his next over, Sean Dickson went back and was leg before wicket for 3 to leave the Spitfires 32 for 3 from 9.5 overs.

Jamie Porter had made the breakthrough with only 11 on the board when he had Zak Crawley superbly picked up low down on the deep mid-wicket boundary by Chopra.

Rain was already falling when Alex Blake struck the final ball of the over to the boundary but with 10 overs now bowled, a positive result was guaranteed.

Simon Harmer conceded three boundaries in his next over but by the final ball of the over, rain was falling heavily to conclude the match.

1st Innings Report | Essex Eagles posted another substantial total in the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign when they closed the innings on 307 for 6 against Kent Spitfires at Canterbury in their final Group match. Varun Chopra top-scored with 83 whilst Alastair Cook posted another half-century with useful contributions from elsewhere in the order.

Needing only one point to be guaranteed a home semi-final draw, the Eagles received the news shortly before the conclusion of their innings that Somerset’s game at Lord’s had been abandoned to leave The Eagles with a place in the last four, and thus a tie against either Somerset or Notts Outlaws.

For the fourth time in the competition this year, the Eagles scored 300 plus to ensure that their opponents would have a demanding target to chase down. Runs flowed from the Essex batsmen starting with an opening partnership of 92 between Chopra and Cook before the latter was dismissed in the 19th over.

He had just reached a run-a-ball half-century with the assistance of 8 boundaries when, four runs later, he attempted to cut a ball from spinner Imran Qayyum and edged a catch to wicket-keeper Adam Rouse.

It took the left-hander’s tally of runs in the competition to 503 for the season at an average of 71.85.

Chopra continued to demonstrate sweetly-timed drives on either side of the wicket to reach a 76-ball fifty that embraced 7 fours. He was joined by Tom Westley in a stand worth 73 in 12 overs as the visitors maintained a good run-rate but with the opener appearing set for his second hundred of the competition this year, he chopped a ball from spinner Qayyum onto his stumps.

Westley went three overs later, the 34th of the innings, for 35 with the total on 183 but Dan Lawrence and Ravi Bopara added brisk runs for the fourth wicket.

Neither appeared in any trouble as they drove the ball with authority. Both cleared the boundary when facing Qayyum but having swelled the total by 62 runs in 9 overs, their entertaining stand came to an end when Ivan Thomas encouraged Lawrence, on 32, to drive to mid-off.

A cameo innings form Ashar Zaidi – 22 from 19 balls with 3 fours – maintained the tempo as he joined Bopara putting on 38 in 4 overs to take the score to 283 before he departed in the 47th over.

Bopara was within one run of his half-century when he drove to gully to end an innings that included two sixes but no other boundaries from the 40 balls he faced.

His dismissal left Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster 13 deliveries and they soon added the 11 runs required to bring up the 300. Ten Doeschate included a 6 in his unbeaten 14 whist Foster was 6 not out at the close of the innings.

MATCH PREVIEW | Kent Spitfires v Essex Eagles

Essex Eagles conclude the qualifying matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup when they make the trip to Canterbury to take on Kent Spitfires in the latest Battle of the Bridge encounter between the two adversaries.

The Eagles have named a 14-man squad that includes Neil Wagner although fellow pace bowler Matt Quinn is rested as part of his recovery plan from injury.

The visitors need only one point to secure a semi-final home tie although they are guaranteed at least a place in the quarter-final regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s match. Victory or a point from a tied match or no-result would be sufficient to take the Eagles just one game away from a place in a Lord’s Final for the first time since 2008.

Essex have recorded six wins from their seven matches in the competition so far, the latest being a 72-run success over Somerset at Taunton on Sunday. That result allowed the Eagles to leapfrog the West Country side and take over top-spot in the Group after a performance that left Head coach Chris Silverwood justifiably lauding his players for their efforts.

“We knew it was always going to be a tough game down there and it proved to be all the way through,” he reflected. “You could see why Somerset have had such a good season in 50 overs cricket and we had two good teams going at each other which made for a super game.

“But once again, we had people put their hands up to see us through. Cooky, not for the first time, was very good at the top of the order for us; it was great to see Tom Westley back in the runs with a very nice hundred and I thought that Ravi played particularly well. He came in and nurtured the middle order and got us through to a big score so that was excellent. Ashar played a little cameo and overall, it was a very satisfying performance.

“Johann Myburgh was given a let-off when Somerset replied and went on to get a decent score but that’s what happens in sport, when you get a chance, you make people pay. He played some fantastic shots and made life very difficult for us for a while but what I liked was the fact that at no point, did we sit back.

“We kept pushing forward, got his wicket and then started to build the pressure on our opposition. Our bowling attack then did the business and all credit to our captain. Tendo made some brave decisions at various times during their innings and worked his bowlers well.

“Now we take on Kent in our final group match. At the start of the competition, our first aim was to reach the knockout stages and we’ve done that in some style winning six out of seven matches. All credit to the boys for that but now we want to try and ensure a home semi-final. Our approach will be the exactly the same as it has been so far. We’ll get stuck in, follow the same pattern and hopefully get the same results as we have done.”

Somerset now occupy second place and are the only side that can deny Essex a home tie at The Cloudfm County Ground. However, they would have to beat Middlesex in their remaining group match with Middlesex at Lord’s on Wednesday whilst relying on Kent to overturn the Eagles.

Eagles require one point for home semi-final

After a thrilling 72-run victory against Somerset on Sunday, Essex sit just one point away from automatic qualification for the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-finals.

A tie, no-result or victory against Battle of the Bridge rivals Kent on Wednesday will be enough for Chris Silverwood’s side to be one step from Lord’s.

A quarter-final place has already been secured, should the Eagles not clinch top spot on Wednesday, but a semi-final spot is the prize all counties are striving for.

Top spot in the South Group will be fought out between Essex and Sunday’s opponents, Somerset, who travel to Middlesex.

Somerset will hope the Eagles slip up but with 6 wins out of 7 so far, Ryan ten Doeschate takes a side full of confidence to Canterbury.

Third spot in the group is more complicated, with four counties having the opportunity to clinch the last knockout place.

Surrey are in the ascendency and if they beat Gloucestershire in Bristol, they will qualify no matter what other results are.

Sussex Sharks host Hampshire with the winner hoping Surrey slip up against Gloucestershire but the West Country side do not achieve a better net run rate.

The situation is much simpler for the Eagles though, a win and Essex top the group.

WATCH | Westley becomes 4th One-Day Cup centurion

The Eagles secured qualification into the knockout stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup by beating Somerset by 72 runs in Taunton. This was the sixth victory in the competition with the 8th and final match in the group stage taking place on Wednesday afternoon. Essex Eagles have to get 1 more point to guarantee a semi-final tie at The Cloudfm County Ground in mid-June.

The Essex innings was the third time that the 300 run mark had been reached with another different centurion leading the run scoring as Tom Westley struck a ton off 98 balls.

Westley spoke to Essex Cricket TV after play to reflect on the match and the current run the side are enjoying.

It was the perfect all-round performance and skipper, Ryan ten Doeschate also praised his sides efforts in the West Country as the Eagles overtook Somerset in the South Group and moved onto 12 points from a possible 14.

Match Preview | Somerset v Essex Eagles

Following the comprehensive 7-wickets victory over Middlesex on Friday night, Essex Eagles travel down to Taunton to face Somerset in a top-of-the-table South Group clash on Sunday.

Only run-rate separates the two teams who have both won 5 of their six matches in the competition thus far. The West Country outfit boasts a run-rate of 0.930 whilst the Eagles most recent success improved their own statistic that now stands at 0.610.

The two sides have moved three points clear of closest rivals Sussex Sharks with two matches to play as they battle to move closer to a semi-final place reserved for the winners of the North and South Groups.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood admitted that he was very satisfied with Friday’s success. ”It was a really good performance and the lads played really well,” he said.

“Middlesex had got off to a half-decent start and at one point, I thought they might post a bigger score but the lads bowled well and got us right into the game. To bowl them out for under 150 was absolutely fantastic.

“Jamie Porter and Paul Walter were backed up by the rest of the guys so all credit to all of them.

“Our first priority before the match was to get the win and the next was to try and improve our run-rate which could be crucial in determining who makes it through automatically from the group into the semi-final.

“We fulfilled both targets which is why we sent Ashar Zaidi up the order with instructions to get the run-rate up and we’ve done that.

“Somerset have still got a superior run-rate so there is a lot to play for on Sunday.

“I’d be delighted if we could top the group because that would take us one game away from a Lord’s Final but let’s get the last two qualifying games over first and see where we are then.

The way our batsmen then chased down the target was superb particularly with that run-rate in mind as well, I thought we were very methodical. Cooky showed his class and then Ravi came in and helped finish the job.

“Overall, it was almost the complete performance if I’m honest.”

Essex Eagles squad:
Varun Chopra (6) (Ilford)
James Foster (7) (Wanstead)
Simon Harmer (11)
Tom Westley (21) (Mildenhall)
Paul Walter (22) (Billericay)
Ravi Bopara (25) (Hainault & Clayhall)
Alastair Cook (26) (Maldon)
Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (Harwich) Captain
Dan Lawrence (28) (Chingford)
Adam Wheater (31) (Woodford Wells)
Jamie Porter (44) (Chingford)
Callum Taylor (67) (Swardeston)
Matt Quinn (94) (South Woodford)
Ashar Zaidi (99) (Ilford)

Match Preview | Essex Eagles v Middlesex

Essex Eagles continue the Royal London One-Day Cup involvement on Friday when they entertain Middlesex in a Day/Night contest at The Cloudfm County Ground with play scheduled to start at 2pm.

Somerset and Essex, who meet at Taunton on Sunday, are level on points with identical records having played five and won four of their qualifying matches thus far, with only a superior run-rate allowing the West Country side to top the table.

The prize for each of the two Group winners is a guaranteed place in the semi-finals whilst the runners-up and third place teams will meet in a quarter-final to decide the remaining two teams in the last four stage.

The Eagles have named a 15-man squad for Friday’s match. All-rounder Ravi Bopara, who was forced to sit out Wednesday’s victory with a slight groin strain, will undergo a late fitness test.

Eagles batting coach Anthony McGrath admits that, although the county has only suffered one defeat in all competitions this season, they have not yet been firing on all cylinders.

“It was a narrow win over Sussex but that has been the trend of our season so far,” he said.

“We are nowhere near our best yet and I think that everyone can see that. We do tend to make things more difficult than they should be but at the end of the day, we’ve won again and that makes it four wins out of five in the Royal London One-Day Cup and that has put us into a terrific position.

“Before the start of the game, Sussex were up there with us in the table, Somerset also lost on Wednesday and so it really was a good day for us.

“Having said that, there are still three matches left and anything can happen. But, as I said, we are in a really good position to build on from here. We could pick out quite a few things that didn’t go so well for us on Wednesday but I’d rather talk about the positives. Those two innings from Ryan (ten Doeschate) and Alastair (Cook) were absolutely phenomenal really to get us up to 290 odd from 29 for three.

“They really set up the game for us and then we bowled well up to the 40th over and we all know what happened then. But we have won four out of five in the competition and that’s the most important statistic. A win is a win and we are delighted with that.

“There is a lot of improvement to come and I can’t wait to see what we can do when we get it right!”

Essex Eagles squad:
Varun Chopra (6) (Ilford)
James Foster (7) (Wanstead)

Paul Walter (22) (Billericay)

Callum Taylor (67) (Swardeston)
Matt Quinn (94) (South Woodford)

Cook enters Top 10 in MVP Rankings

Alastair Cook has moved into the top 10 of this season’s Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player Rankings after back to back centuries.

Cook has enjoyed a productive week with The Eagles in the Royal London One-Day Cup following up his first List A century in five years against Gloucestershire with another in yesterday’s 10 runs home win over Sussex Sharks.

Cook is enjoying an inspired run of form for the Club. and has demonstrated that he is also a lethal asset to have in limited-overs cricket, contributing 40 per cent of Essex’s runs against Gloucestershire and 37 per cent against Sussex.

His 109 yesterday helped Essex recover from losing Varun Chopra, Tom Westley and Adam Wheater to a Jerome Taylor hat-trick with Cook at the non-striker’s end.

The PCA MVP Rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season.

The formula takes into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike-rates as well as runs scored and wickets taken.

Cook’s rich vein of form in 50 overs cricket followed consistent performances in the Specsavers County Championship including a century in the win over Somerset at Taunton last month.

His 110 made up 43 per cent of Essex’s second innings total and helped Cook earn 28 PCA MVP points and a match haul of 48 points.

Cook is also Essex’s highest-ranked player in the PCA MVP for this season’s One-Day Cup in 12th place with 71 points, 27 behind Glamorgan all-rounder Colin Ingram, the new leader.

Ravi Bopara is in 25th place with 58 points, eight places and five points above Ryan ten Doeschate.

Bopara is third in the all-time rankings for 50 overs cricket with 509 points, 43 behind Nottinghamshire’s Samit Patel and 83 adrift of Somerset’s Peter Trego.

But Bopara can still boast the best match return in 50 overs cricket since the PCA MVP system was introduced in 2007.

He took 49 points from the seven wickets win against Lancashire at Chelmsford in 2015, 31 of them for his 101 from 98 balls after he had taken four for 31.

The full PCA MVP Rankings table can be viewed here

What are the PCA MVP Rankings?

The PCA MVP Rankings system was introduced in 2007 and was designed by the players to identify the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season.

The formula gives full credit to those players whose performances improve their team’s chances of winning. Points are accrued for all runs scored and wickets taken, these are then adjusted within the context of the match to take into account strike rates and economy rates.

Runs gain more points if they are scored quickly or in low-scoring contests. Top order wickets are judged more valuable than those that fall later.

Watch | Paul Walter stars with the ball in Sussex win

Making his List A debut against Sussex Sharks, Paul Walter rose to the occasion taking 3 wickets in a tense finish at The Cloudfm County Ground. In the first Day/Night match of the season in the Royal London One-Day Cup, Essex came out winners by 10 runs thanks to Walter bowling Jerome Taylor with 11 balls to go.

The Billercay-born all rounder finished with figures of 3-45 off 9.1 overs and also took the vital wickets of Jofre Archer (45) and Danny Briggs (8).

He spoke to Essex Cricket TV after play to reflect on a fine performance.

Essex Eagles play at The Cloudfm County Ground again this week with the visit of Middlesex on Friday afternoon. This is the final home group game of the tournament with ten Doeschate’s men vying for the top spot in the South Group. MATCH PREVIEW | Essex Eagles v Sussex Sharks

Essex Eagles look to return to winning ways when Sussex Sharks visit in a Day/Night Royal London One-Day Cup contest at The Cloudfm County Ground on Wednesday with play scheduled to start at 2pm.

The Eagles suffered their first defeat in this year’s competition by the narrowest of margins when Glamorgan ended a three-match unbeaten run with a one-run victory.

Essex have won five of their last six games against Sussex, including a five-wicket win when these teams met in June last year.

The Sharks arrive in a positive frame of mind having earned a six-wicket win in their last away fixture, thus ending an eight-game losing streak on the road.

However the Eagles have been dealt a blow with the news that Overseas fast bowler Neil Wagner will miss the remaining group matches after being called into the New Zealand squad who are in Ireland for a Triangular series with the host nation plus Bangladesh.

Although he was not selected for the Black Caps party to contest the Champions Trophy, he has linked up with them as an injury replacement and that means he could be unavailable for Essex until the end of the three-nation series which concludes on May 24th.

The Eagles have named a 14-man squad for Wednesday’s match with paceman Matt Quinn returning after being rested last weekend.

Sunday’s defeat in Wales saw the Eagles drop down one place into third position in the South Group. The two Group winners automatically earn their place in the semi-final whilst the counties finishing the 8-match group stages in second and third positions contest two quarter-finals.

Eagles Head Coach Chris Silverwood acknowledged that the game with Glamorgan was superb for the fans. “It was a real nail-biter but I’m disappointed that we couldn’t maintain our 100 per cent record in the competition particularly when I felt we were well placed with 10 overs to go,” he said.

“You have to acknowledge the innings that Colin Ingram played, we’ve seen time and again that he is a very good player and that he can take a game away from you very quickly. He was outstanding but I was delighted with the century from Varun (Chopra) whilst Ravi (Bopara) was also playing well until his unfortunate dismissal.

“Still, we’ve won three of our first four games and at the moment, we are in a very good position going into the remaining four very important matches over the next week or so.

“Obviously it is a blow losing Neil Wagner because he’s fitted in so well and done a good job for us. We’ve seen that he’s a good bowler who gets wickets. But we do have capable options and it presents an opportunity for one someone to step up and take their chance.

“You are always going to lose players at some stage through the season whether that be through call-ups or injuries and that’s why you need a decent squad to compensate for that.”

Essex Eagles squad:

Varun Chopra (6) (Ilford)
Nick Browne (10) (South Woodford)
Simon Harmer  (11)
Tom Westley (21) (Mildenhall)
Paul Walter (22) (Billericay)
Ravi Bopara (25) (Hainault & Clayhall)
Alastair Cook (26) (Maldon)
Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (Harwich) Captain
Dan Lawrence (28) (Chingford)
Adam Wheater (31) (Woodford Wells) Wicket Keeper
Jamie Porter (44) (Chingford)
Callum Taylor (67) (Swardeston)
Matt Quinn (94)
Ashar Zaidi (99) (Ilford)

Sussex Sharks squad: Luke Wright (C), Jofra Archer (22), Will Beer (18), Danny Briggs (21), Michael Burgess, Laurie Evans (32), Harry Finch (6), George Garton (27), Chris Nash (23), Ajmal Shahzad (4), Jerome Taylor (75), Stiaan van Zyl (74), David Wiese (96).
