Aaron Beard set for season finale in Canterbury

Essex head into the final Specsavers County Championship match of this season this week against Kent with promotion secured and a chance to see more of the talent coming through the Essex ranks. Aaron Beard is high on that list and has been named in the squad ahead of the game.

With Graham Napier officially retired, and Jamie Porter struggling with an injury, it looks as if Essex’s new-ball attack will comprise 38-year-old David Masters and 18-year-old Aaron Beard for the first and last time.

Masters joins Napier in hanging up his boots after one last hurrah against his old county, and in the process Essex will lose two stalwarts who have contributed a combined total of 99 Championship wickets this season.

Beard, on the other hand, represents the future. The 18 year old pace bowler was named in a 17-strong Young Lions squad for winter training camps in Loughborough and Dubai ahead of a five-match tour in January and February to play India Under-19s.

Team mate Dan Lawrence benefited considerably by spending last winter playing for England in the Under-19 World Cup and Beard said: “That is the sort of step-up I want to make.

“Dan was in the Under-19s last year and look at what he’s done this year. He’s had a great season, hitting nearly 1,000 runs in the Championship and playing all formats, which is something I’d like to do in the future. I’ve just got to wait until I get my chance like Dan and take it like him.”

Beard has made three first-class appearances for Essex this summer, all in May before he joined up with the England Under-19s to play the series against Sri Lanka. He took nine wickets at an average of 33.33, including career-best figures of four for 62 against the senior Sri Lankan tourists.

He said: “At the start of the season I didn’t expect to break into the first-team squad or make my debut. I thought I was just going to try and play regularly for the second XI and work with the coaches. But I had the opportunity to get three first-class games under my belt – and hopefully a fourth tomorrow.

“It will be great to play with Hoddy because he has been such a big part of the Essex bowling attack for so many years and someone I look up to for advice. I’ve had chats with Napes and Hoddy because they’ve been there before and they know what I need to do.

“They’ve said I’ve got the basic skills and the ability to do what I need to do to get wickets. They’ve told me I just need to be patient, work had and not fall into bad habits, especially in respect to my action.

“They are big players who have done really well at the top end of cricket for many years and we’ll miss them, but we have players who can hopefully fill the hole left.”

Beard has enjoyed his first injury-free summer after enduring two operations for a double stress fracture in his back between the ages of 15 and 17. “It’s been a long wait,” he says, “but it’s been worth it.”

Next season Essex will be playing in Division One and Beard said: “It’s going to be a big step-up for me. There are some big international players in that division and I’m going to have to up my game and play as well as I can to make sure I fit in straight away.

“My dream is to play for England. That’s what drives me and hopefully I can train as hard as I can, get as strong as I can, bowl as quickly as I can and take as many wickets as I can – then who knows?”

MATCH PREVIEW | Kent v Essex

Essex travel to Canterbury to face Kent in their final match of the season in party mood having already secured promotion.

Despite defeat by Glamorgan at The E.C.G last week, the six point haul from the match was sufficient to ensure that the 2017 season will see the County compete in Division One for the first time since 2010.

Head coach Chris Silverwood paid tribute to the efforts of the players and staff.

“Our achievement is the culmination of a lot of hard work by the players and also by everyone behind the scenes at the club and I don’t think anyone can deny that we are worthy champions,” he insisted.

“Clinching promotion was a wonderful feeling. It was something that we were all determined to achieve when we started the season and now we have done just that, we are both delighted and excited about next year.

“We have an exciting time ahead of us at Essex cricket. We are going to be tested by the best sides in the country and it will be a challenge for our players. For them, it will not be a matter of just trying to raise their game but generally just getting even better at what they are doing.

“Personally, I am very proud to be part of the Essex success but the hard work regarding planning for next year is already underway. Now we are back in Division One, we have to make sure that, not only do we stay there but that we are competitive and challenge to win it.

“There is a big challenge ahead of us but it’s one that we will relish.”

Essex will be missing two key figures when they return to Division one as both David Masters and Graham Napier  have announced their retirement at the end of this season.

Chris Silverwood acknowledged their contributions over the years. “They have been wonderful servants to the county and, of course, both will be sorely missed,” he stated.

“They have been excellent professionals and are perfect examples to young cricketers in both their performances and attitude.”

Essex have lost just one of their last nine matches against Kent with 4 wins and four draws and whilst the Division Two champions Essex have won their last two away games by an innings margin.

The retiring Graham Napier is the top wicket taker in the division this season with 63, overall he has 69 in first-class cricket this season, by far his most productive campaign since his debut in 1997.

The match with Kent starts on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m.

August Player Of The Month Winner – Graham Napier

Graham Napier signed off his fantastic Essex career in fitting style by winning the August Player Of The Month award sponsored by Devines.

After the Specsavers County Championship Match at Colchester at the beginning of the month, Napes was always going to be favourite to win Player Of The Month. He took a 5-for and smashed a century in the same match against Sussex on his old ground. He went on to take 21 wickets in the month, including his 50th championship wicket for the season, leaving the majority of people questioning his retirement!

Congratulations to Graham Napier for signing off in such style!

The winner of the signed Essex Cricket bat for voting for Graham Napier is Ron Snell.

One-year contract extension for Quinn

Essex CCC are pleased to announce that Matt Quinn has signed a new contract with the club.

Quinn has extended his existing contract by an extra year meaning his contract will run until the end of the 2018 season.

The Kiwi seamer quickly become a pivotal figure for the club in all formats and has taken 22 first-class wickets in 2016 including the memorable spell against Gloucestershire where he finished with figures of 11-148.

Opening bowler Quinn was happy to extend his contract for a further year and said: “I have loved every minute of my time with the club so far and I am delighted with how everything has gone this season.

“I am thrilled that we are playing Division One cricket next year and look forward to testing myself against the best teams in the country.”

Chris Silverwood was ecstatic to tie the 23-year-old down for another year and said: “Matt performed excellently for us in all competitions this season and quickly became a pivotal member of the squad.

“To be able to extend his contract for another year is brilliant news both for him and the club.”

Westley & Beard To Feature For England Lions Over Winter

More than 50 players between the ages of 17 and 30 have been selected for involvement in the four components of the men’s International Pathway this winter – the Lions, the Young Lions, the Pace Programme, and Overseas Placements.

It means that all 18 first-class counties will have players abroad either with England or on the Pathway, spread around four continents.

Andy Flower will lead an 18-man squad on a Lions training camp in Dubai in November and December, including three 50-over matches for England Lions against the United Arab Emirates at the ICC Academy and a three-day match against Afghanistan in Sharjah.

“This squad is for the first half of our Lions programme this winter,” explained Flower. “Firstly to build on some of the leadership work we did at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst last winter, which leads into a short camp at Loughborough, before we head out to Dubai later in November.

“We are taking 18 players because whereas last winter, and in our Tri-Series this summer, our focus was specifically on white-ball cricket, this year we will be working on both white-ball and red-ball skills. Developing skill will remain the highest priority of our work, with a range of specialist coaches to work with the players in the excellent facilities at the ICC Academy, and initially the opportunity to do that away from the different demands of competition. However towards the end of the camp we will play as England Lions in white-ball and red-ball fixtures, and an England Lions squad will then be selected later in December for a tour of Sri Lanka in February and March which will again involve white-ball and red-ball fixtures.”

Lions (for training camps at Sandhurst, Loughborough, Dubai, Nov/Dec, including white-ball matches against UAE, three-day match against Afghanistan): Nick Gubbins (Middlesex), Keaton Jennings (Durham), Tom Alsop (Hampshire), Daniel Bell-Drummond (Kent), Tom Westley (Essex), Joe Clarke (Worcestershire), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Ollie Rayner (Middlesex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Sam Curran (Surrey), Tom Curran (Surrey), Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex), Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire), James Fuller (Middlesex), Craig Overton (Somerset), Stuart Meaker (Surrey).

The Lions will be joined in Dubai in December by the Young Lions, a 17-strong squad of players who will be led by Andy Hurry, and who are all eligible for the England Under-19s tour of India in the New Year. This includes nine players who took part in this summer’s Under-19 matches against Sri Lanka.

Young Lions (for training camps in Loughborough, Dubai, Nov/Dec): Max Holden (Middlesex), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), George Bartlett (Somerset), Josh Dell (Worcestershire), Tom Banton (Somerset), Ben Green (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Delray Rawlins (Sussex), Amar Virdi (Surrey), Josh Coughlin (Durham), Will Jacks (Surrey), Euan Woods (Surrey), Liam Banks (Warwickshire), Aaron Beard (Essex), George Panayi (Warwickshire), Jack Blatherwick (Nottinghamshire), George Scrimshaw (Worcestershire).

The club wishes both Tom and Aaron the best of luck with the Lions & Young Lions over the winter.

Cricket hits Essex from all angles over the weekend

Essex put on a brilliant display of cricket over the weekend as numerous teams from all levels were in action, including the Over-50s, Disability XI, U19s, Women’s U21s and more.

Also on a day of Exciting and Engaging cricket, a multi-faith XI from East London played the Vatican’s own touring St Peter’s Cricket Club in a Light of Faith match at Walthamstow on the 15th Anniversary of 9/11, whilst East London’s Gujarat Metropolitan Cricket League and Elliot Davis Cricket League played their finals.

Essex Cricket Head of Operations Dan Feist said, “This weekend along with the last month has really shown that the vision to really bring Cricket together as we look to Unleash the game is moving forward. The range and amount of Cricket on show was exceptional along with the people involved from a wide range of ages, cultures and communities. It shows that we have a game that we can be proud of that really supports our drive to Excite, Engage and Enhance the Communities,”

At Walthamstow, cricketers of many religions, including Sikhs, Muslims, Anglicans and Hindus, came together to form the multi-faith XI, captained by Sajid Patel of the National Cricket League, as they played St Peters in the Light of Faith Game.

Newham councillors Mukesh Patel and Forhad Hussain were just two of the players to make up the squad, whilst Feist, former England and Essex captain Graham Gooch, Greater London Assembly Member Councillor Unmesh Desai and East London Cricket Coordinator Arfan Akram were also in attendance.

On a great day for cricket, the multi-faith XI were put in to bat by St Peters and made 69-6 in their 20 overs, and then St Peters chased down the total in 11 overs for a six wicket win.

A much closer match took place at Hutton Cricket Club in the Matchplay Finals. The Hutton U16s posted 223-6 in 40 overs against Upminster in the Plate Final, and in reply, Upminster reached an identical score of 223-6 with one delivery remaining. With the game hanging in the balance, Hutton’s Connor Librick lifted his team to victory, bowling the Upminster batsman to give Hutton the win by virtue of having lost less wickets in their innings. It was less tense in the Matchplay Cup Final, though, as Galleywood defeated Ilford by seven wickets.

The Essex U19s tournament finished at Billericay with the semi-finals and finals taking place. Wanstead and Snaresbrook eased past Colchester and East Essex by 43 runs behind an unbeaten 52 from Feroze Khushi and a four-fer courtesy of Misem Ali Syed Zaidi. The Oakfield Parkonians secured the right to face the defending champions as they knocked off Goresbrook, but in the final, Wanstead proved to the best for the second year in a row.

In women’s cricket, the Essex County Ground hosted the U21s final between Colchester and Harold Wood. On a rainy day, Colchester batted first and were bowled out for 90 in the 14th over, after the match was reduced to 15 overs a side. In reply, Harold Wood were unable to get going against a stellar Colchester bowling attack and tight fielding, as Colchester won by 33 runs.

Meanwhile, England captain Heather Knight dropped by Wanstead and Snaresbrook to do a coaching session for the younger girls.

In the Disability Finals at Harold Wood, Saffron Walden and Harold Wood were named joint winners; whilst over at Rayleigh Cricket Club, Wickford emerged as champions of the Warsop Sunday League. And in the Gujarat Metropolitan Cricket League, in the 40-over KO Shield, Aztecs beat Aryana by six wickets.

But that wasn’t all the cricket that was going on, as Orsett and Thurrock Cricket Club defeated Stratford and West Ham CC in the Foundation Cup; whilst up in Derby, the Essex Over-50s run came to an end in the final, as Leicestershire and Rutland put on a 60-run 10th wicket partnership to take the championship.

But despite their loss, the Over-50s continued with the weekend theme—and long Essex tradition—of Exciting, Engaging and Enhancing Cricket.

Thank you for your support at The E.C.G this season

Champions. After 15 matches that included six wins, six draws and three defeats, Essex gained promotion into Division One of the Specsavers County Championship. It was Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster who helped Essex over the line on Day Two of the match against Glamorgan. Four of the wins came in front of the home crowd at Chelmsford with the season concluding next week when Essex face rivals, Kent in the final game of the season at Canterbury.

It was a special match, which saw players, staff, Members and supporters come together to celebrate a fantastic achievement with celebration after play on the pitch in front of the Pavilion.

The season has been full of highlights, some which include individual achievements of 1,000 Championship runs for Tom Westley, Ryan ten Doeschate and Nick Browne, and 50+ wickets for Graham Napier and Jamie Porter.

The Club would like to thank all the Members and supporters who have visited The Essex County Ground and Castle Park, Colchester this year to cheer on the team and we hope you join us again next year for Division One cricket at Chelmsford!
