Ryan ten Doeschate signs one-year extension

Specsavers County Championship captain Ryan ten Doeschate has committed his future to Essex after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 36-year-old’s contract will now run until the end of the 2018 season.

After a fine season in all competitions, ten Doeschate reached 1000 Specsavers County Championship runs for the campaign and scored the runs that clinched promotion.

A popular figure in the dressing room and with fans alike, the Specsavers County Championship captain will hope to cap an excellent season with promotion in the coming weeks.

The former Dutch international was not hesitant to extend his time in Chelmsford and said: “My affinity with the club has grown throughout my time with Essex. I have thoroughly enjoyed leading this talented squad in the Specsavers County Championship and hope we can continue to be successful over the next couple of years.

“Helping this team to Division One was the perfect way to cap off an excellent season.”

David Masters to retire at end of campaign

David Masters will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2016 campaign.

Masters has decided to call time on his career after 16 successful years at the highest level which has included representing Essex, Kent and Leicestershire.

The opening-bowler made his first-class debut for Kent against Surrey in 2000 and made is Essex debut in 2008 against Northamptonshire.

Masters has taken 668 first-class and 176 List A wickets in his career to date, at an average of 25.36 and 32.38 respectively. A bowler who moves the ball both ways off the seam, Masters was once in England contention after taking 93 wickets in a single County Championship season.

Having been at the club since 2008, Masters celebrated his benefit year in 2013 and has become a popular figure among supporters and players alike.

Chris Silverwood is sad to see Masters retiring but understands his reasoning’s behind it.

He said: “Dave has been a wonderful servant to the club and also the game. Year after year he has been integral to any successes of the team.

“He is an intelligent cricketer who has taken an abundance of wickets throughout his career. I have been fortunate enough to work with Dave in my six years at the club and wish him well for whatever he moves into going forward.”

Masters understandably spent time thinking about the decision and what was best for both parties moving forward.

He added: “It is always a difficult decision to call time on a career you have loved. I have been fortunate to spend 20 years at the professional level with three fabulous clubs.

“After joining Essex in 2008 I feel I found my home. Everyone at the club has treated me brilliantly from the fans, to the coaching staff and the office staff as well.

“The members have been exceptional and the crowd here at Chelmsford really is the best in the country. I leave the team in a good place with the emergence of a number of fast bowlers at the club. To retire after winning the Division Two title is something you can only dream of.”

Tendo fired up for Glamorgan clash

Essex head into the final home match of the season knowing exactly what needs to be done to clinch promotion to Division One, returning to top flight Championship cricket since 2010.

Just 6 points are required in the match against Glamorgan to prevent challengers, Kent and Sussex catching up.

Captain, Ryan ten Doeschate has spoke ahead of the clash to talk about the side’s preparation and focus when heading into the match on Monday.

“It’s a great position to be in,” admitted ten Doeschate. “The secret is not to focus too much on the six points. Obviously there is the temptation just to go out and get the six points, but we’ll approach the game like we have every game this season.

“We’ll try and set the game up and push things on the first two days. If we follow our processes, and play to our ability, those bonus points should take care of themselves.

“You can’t not acknowledge the fact we only need six points, but we’ll try and steer away from thinking like that.”

Securing the six points this week would mean Essex complete the season’s main aim with a match to spare, against Kent in a week’s time. It was a seemingly strong possibility that the team would need to overcome second placed Kent in the final match of the season, however Northamptonshire’s 10 wicket victory last week boosted Essex hopes.

Ten Doeschate said: “At one stage we thought it was going to take 230 points to win it, and up to three weeks ago there were five teams still in there.

“But our results against Leicestershire and Worcestershire put them out of contention. Kent have applied pressure all the way through, but then slipped up last week.

“Before then we thought we would have to win this game [against Glamorgan] and go to Kent and get a result. But for Northants to do the job for us is obviously great. We still have a little bit or work to do, but we’re delighted with the position we’re in now.”

The batsmen have laid the foundation for Essex’s success with a plethora of big totals, but ten Doeschate said: “Probably most importantly, and least noticed, has been the bowlers who have come on and mopped up a second innings, which is always tough.

“You look at all the county games this season and see how many teams have got into good positions and couldn’t finish it off.”

The Captain was also happy to welcome two familiar faces back into the Essex ranks with Varun Chopra and Adam Wheater set to make that debuts once again, after resigning in recent weeks.

“Certainly the plan from Silvers [Chris Silverwood], and even above Silvers, was to prepare for Division One cricket and we were always looking to strengthen. Getting our own guys, Chops and Wheats, back is great and we are on the look-out for bowlers to go with the exciting potential we have in Beard, Dixon and Quinn.”

Chopra and Wheater are likely to make their debuts against Glamorgan, and ten Doeschate admits: “There is a strong keenness to get them in, but at the same time we want to play our best team, one we think is going to win this game.

“The sentimental thing is that it will be hard to leave out the guys who have performed so well so far, but I think the squad understands that the primary goal is to win another game of cricket.”

Match Preview | Essex v Glamorgan

With two matches remaining in the Specsavers County Championship campaign, league leaders Essex are on the cusp of promotion and a return to play Division One cricket for the first time since 2010.

Just 6 points are needed from the remaining games and could secure their place in the top-flight for 2017 when Glamorgan visit The Essex County Ground on Monday.

Essex have named new faces, Varun Chopra and Adam Wheater in the 14-man squad for the match.

Chopra left the county after the 2009 campaign to join Warwickshire but has now has signed a three-year deal to return to Essex from next season. The Midlands county have allowed the 29 year-old batsman to join the Club early for the remainding fixtures and is set to take his place at the top of the order in place of the unavailable Alastair Cook.

Meanwhile, 26 year-old wicket-keeper batsman Wheater, who left Essex to join Hampshire in 2013, has also returned to his former county in time for the promotion run-in having completed a two-year deal until the end of the 2018 season.

He has proved a prolific performer with the bat for Hampshire this year scoring 802 Championship runs @ 47.18. Essex Head Coach, Chris Silverwood is delighted to bring both players back to the club where they spent their formative years.

“It’s great to have players of their calibre back with us. They are talented players who will boost our squad and want to help play their part in bringing Division One cricket to Essex in 2017.

“If we get 6 points from these last two games then we are guaranteed promotion but in the meantime as we always do, we are just concentrating on winning the next game and making sure our preparation is spot-on. We just need to concentrate on doing the job, getting the 6 points and then nobody can catch us, and we are home and dry.

“Because of the way we’ve played our cricket this year, we find ourselves with this excellent chance of winning the single promotion place that’s available this time around. However, until we have clinched it, we still have a job to do. Once we’ve done it, I’ll be really happy.

“Not only have we been successful this year but we’ve played some really entertaining cricket, which I’m sure our Members and supporters have thoroughly enjoyed. These are exciting times for Essex Cricket and the prospects for the future are bright and very encouraging.”

Exciting Finish sees Wanstead Take Girls Matchplay Crown

Sunday 4 September saw the Finals of the Girl’s U16 Matchplay competition at Billericay CC between Wanstead & Snaresbrook and Hutton; Hutton won the toss and elected to bat first.

Imogen Southcott and Calley Foyster opened the batting for Hutton and got off to a good start. A few wickets then fell which brought Amy Hills to the crease who scored a stylish 48 runs before being denied her half century by a good ball from Dipti Puthawala that found the stumps. There was no relief for Wanstead as they made their way in to Hutton’s middle order as Grace Poole played some cracking shots to finish on 69 runs not out.
Athletic fielding from the Wanstead girls meant the Hutton score was lower than it could have been as they finished on 205/4 off their 40 overs.

Puthawala and Nafeesa Aziz opened the batting for Wanstead in reply but an early catch saw the latter sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Bethany Chambers then arrived at the crease and after a steady start, begun to put pressure on the Hutton side. Wickets fell regularly and either side were always in the game. Luckily for Wanstead, Chambers played a stunning and mature innings to see her side reach the Hutton target with just 2 balls to spare.

The final was played in the best spirit and was a fine display of the talent around the county.

Varun Chopra has left Warwickshire to join Essex, ahead of the final two matches of the 2016 season.

Chopra signed a three-year contract with the Club in August, but will now be available for the matches against Glamorgan and Kent in the Specsavers County Championship later this month.

Chopra said: “Essex has always been a special place for me, it’s where I learnt all my cricket growing up.” “It was a place I always wished to come back to at some stage during my career, and hopefully by using my Division 1 experience I can help the boys over the line and back into the top flight.”

Griffiths blown away by Kia Super League experience

Essex Women’s captain, Cordelia Griffith spoke to https://http://essexcricket.org.uk/ about her experiences playing alongside big-name international stars in last month’s Kia Super League, just missing out the chance to feature at Finals Day, which took place at The E.C.G in August.

Griffith, who signed with the Surrey Stars in the competition’s inaugural season, was joined by players such as England’s Natalie Sciver, Tammy Beaumont and Laura Marsh, and South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp.

It has been a pleasure and an amazing experience playing with and against such talented international players

“Not only did they pass on their knowledge and experiences, their professionalism and their work ethic was a lesson to us all.” said Griffith.

Surrey finished fourth out of the six teams — Southern Vipers, Loughborough Lightning, Yorkshire Diamonds, Western Storm and Lancashire Thunder — and just missed participating in the Finals Day at Chelmsford after finishing one win behind Loughborough, who beat them by 34 runs when the two sides met in mid-August.

But although the Stars did not make the final, which was won by the Vipers, Griffith said that she and her teammates gelled well and enjoyed their time in the competition.

She added, “Having played with and against some of the girls before, I already knew some of them very well, but we all bonded with ease and without doubt have formed some long term friendships.”

Griffith played in all five matches for Surrey and scored a total of 35 runs, including a high score of 14 against the Storm.

And Griffith provided an assessment of the talent level, saying, “I thoroughly enjoyed the level of competition as it was of a high standard and thus suitably challenging. As opposed to being technically challenging, it was more mentally challenging, in that I had to be able to perform and execute my skills in pressure situations.”

The Women’s Kia Super League will continue next year, potentially incorporating One Day matches into the format in addition to the T20s, and Griffith indicated that the success of this year’s competition will have a solid impact on the future of the competition and women’s cricket as a whole.

She said, “The KSL has been amazing in its first year. Not only has it produced a high standard of cricket for the players, it has propelled women’s cricket into the public eye, bringing in huge crowds and raising the profile of women’s cricket.

“Undoubtedly the competition will inspire young girls to get involved in the sport, but also encourage those already involved to aspire and strive for a place future Super League tournaments and to play against the best in the world without playing for their country.”
