Jesse Ryder returns to New Zealand

Jesse Ryder has returned to New Zealand after it was mutually agreed his contract would come to an end early.

The Kiwi International suffered a calf strain recently and has since been hampered by the injury. With only Specsavers County Championship games left it was deemed in the best interests of both parties if Ryder returned to his home country early.

Having been with the club for the past three years, Ryder has made contributions throughout his time at The E.C.G both on and off the pitch.

Ryder was an integral cog in Essex’s team, specifically during the 2015 season, as he scored 1,359 runs and took 48 wickets in all formats.

A destructive batsman and wily bowler, Ryder will be fondly remembered by the Essex faithful for his contributions throughout his three-year stint.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Jesse for his services and wish him well for his future endeavours.

Beard suffers One-Day defeat for England U19s

Enlgand U19s got off the losing start in the three match Royal London One-Day Series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Essex’s Aaron Beard feautred in the match, which ended in a 108 run defeat at Wormsley CC.

Beard, 18, ended the match on 17 not out, along with respectable bowling figures of 0-49 from his 9 overs in the match.

Prior to play starting, Aaron received his One-Day Cap from England’s Andrew Strauss

This was England’s first chance to bounce back from the defeat they suffered in the second four-day match against the Sri Lankans in Northampton last week, albeit with a slightly different team.

Instead they were dismissed for 149 after restricting the tourists to 257 for seven, losing their last eight wickets for 53 – seven of them shared by Sri Lanka’s three spinners.

England made four changes to the team who had lost in Northampton. Kent’s Hugh Bernard, Worcestershire’s Zen Malik and the Somerset pair of Ben Green and Dom Bess came into the team – Malik and Bess making their Under-19 debuts, among seven players who were winning their first one-day caps.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, but Bernard gave England the perfect start when he pegged back Dilan Jayalath’s middle stump with the third ball of the match.

Green then broke a dangerous second wicket stand of 67 when he had Avishka Fernando well caught by a diving Ollie Pope.

But Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka picked up where he had left off in Northampton, striking 70 from 96 balls with eight fours.

The tourists seemed on course for an imposing total but were pegged back in the middle of their innings by Bess, an offspinning allrounder from Devon who had already had Asalanka dropped at long on before taking a sharp return catch to dismiss the Sri Lankan captain himself.

Bess ended with impressive figures of one for 30 from his 10 overs, and Bernard then claimed his second wicket courtesy of a superb legside stumping by Pope standing up to the Kent seamer.

Green also collected a second wicket and there was one for Yorkshire allrounder Ed Barnes, and England seemed to have restricted Sri Lanka to a manageable total.

They suffered two early setbacks in their reply when the former Millfield School team-mates George Hankins and George Bartlett, now at Gloucestershire and Somerset respectively, were undone by wiry seamer Thilan Prasan.

That left England relying on their captain Max Holden, who was joined by Malik in a promising partnership of 61 in 14 overs.

But the loss of Holden was a hammer blow as he fell to the off-spin of his fellow captain Asalanka, well taken by Wanidu Hasaranga at short extra cover after making 40 from 69 balls.

That set off a procession, as England struggled to cope with the pressure exerted by Sri Lanka’s spinners and their excited chatter in the field. Pope ran himself out, Malik chipped a catch to mid-wicket after making 32 from 60 balls, and when Dell gave a return catch to Damitha Silva, England had lost four for 10 to slip to 106 for six.

Green and Bess stemmed the flow slightly but Green’s dismissal triggered another burst of four wickets in six overs, with Aaron Beard left unbeaten on 17 from 15 balls – the third highest score of the innings.

Silva ended with three for 28 from his 10 overs, Hasaranga had two for 28 from eight, and Asalanka two for 27 from 6.3.

England now face a must-win match at The Essex County Ground on Saturday to tie the series. Entry to this game is free of charge for all spectators with a range of facilities open around the ground. For more information on the match – view here.

Match Report:

Notts Outlaws beat Essex Eagles by 37 runs after an amazing turnaround in fortunes once the visitors opening partnership had been broken in unfortunate circumstances.

Chasing the home side’s 160 for 7, the Eagles were given a superb start by Jesse Ryder who struck 10 boundaries in an opening stand of 65 in 7.1 overs with Nick Browne before he was run out for 47.

The New Zealander was backing up when Browne straight drove a ball when facing Steven Mullaney and the bowler struck out a hand and the ball hit the stumps.

With Ryder’s departure went the Eagles hopes as the innings completely imploded in dramatic fashion with the remaining nine wickets falling for 58 runs in just 11.3 overs.

Browne and Bopara were the only other batsmen to reach double figures hitting 22 and 10 respectively but the innings completely lost its way after the fine beginning.

Ashar Zaidi clubbed a 6 off the first ball he received but was then caught in the deep off the next delivery and not a single four was achieved in 11 overs as the Outlaws bowlers gained a stranglehold on affairs.

From 62 without loss at the end of the powerplay overs, the batsmen failed to find any tempo being restricted by accurate bowling over after over with spinners Samit Patel and Imran Tahir returning 4 for 20 and 1 for 24 from their 4 overs apiece whilst paceman Steven Mullaney tightened the screw with 2 for 16 from his allocation.

It was a miserable batting performance after the response to the Outlaws innings had started so promisingly.

The home side were put into bat and faced seven different Eagles bowlers in the opening nine overs as skipper Ravi Bopara rotated his bowlers over by over. Greg Smith top-scored with 50 whilst Riki Wessels contributed 36, Patel 23 and Dan Christian 21.

Nottinghamshire reached the end of their powerplay overs on 58 for 1 having lost Michael Lumb to the expensive Paul Walter for 11 who was caught by Jesse Ryder at slip.

But the Eagles, then reigned in their opponents with only 17 runs arriving from the next four overs during which Wessels was caught at backward square leg off the excellent Ryan ten Doeschate.

Bopara accounted for Smith who was bowled in the 14th over and with five overs remaining, the Outlaws were 122 for 3.

Ten Doeschate added the wickets of Christian and Patel to finish with 3 for 19 whilst Graham Napier removed Mullaney and Luke Wood to return 2 for 20 as the visitors attack turned in an economical display in the latter stages of the Outlaws innings to give themselves a fighting chance of reaching Finals Day.

Notts Outlaws | The Low-down

Essex Eagles head into the NatWest T20 Blast Quarter-Finals on Monday evening at Trent Bridge to face Notts Outlaws.

The men from Nottingham have been struggling for form in the Royal London One-Day Cup and Specsavers County Championship formats but finished top of the South group in the shortest form of the game, after recording 8 victories and 2 defeats.

Like their Quarter-Final opponents, Notts Outlaws started the campaign with a defeat succumbing to a defeat against Birmingham Bears at Trent Bridge, which was to be their only defeat at home in the competition this year.

Following back-to-back defeats in the opening two fixtures, the Outlaws bounced back and recorded 3 wins in the months of May and June. West Indian, Andre Russell helped the cause with bat and ball in the two matches he played (56 runs and 4 wickets).

The team were unbeaten for the remainder of the competition, ending with 3 victories against Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire to earn a home Quarter-Final.

Riki Wessels has been a revelation this season and is the Club’s leading run scorer with 360 runs from his 10 innings with a 45.00 average. The Australian born, wicket-keeper batsman top scored against Worcestershire with 80* off a staggering 35 balls. This knock, included a 17-ball half century which is the fastest of the tournament this season.

The Outlaws have been captained by Overseas player, Dan Christian in 2016 who has also been impressive with the bat, hitting 304 from 9 innings. The big-hitting Australian has hit the most sixes in the squad with 23.

Three bowlers have been ever-present for Nottinghamshire with Harry Gurney leading the wicket-taking totals with 14 victims. Gurney has been supported by the experienced Samit Patel (12) and Steven Mullaney (10).

Paul Walter

Paul Walter signed his first professional contract in June 2016 after a successful trial period with the club.Playing in the Shepherd Neame Essex Premier League for Hornchurch Cricket Club, Walter rose to prominence at the age of 18 after hitting six sixes in an over. Although an unconventional route, he joined the first team in Dubai during pre-season, where he showed the attitude and quality required to achieve a professional contract.

The 6’7 left-armer has since gone on to feature across all formats with the majority of his match time has come in white-ball cricket. In 2017, he was the leading wicket-taker in NatWest T20 Blast cricket for the Eagles with 15 wickets.

A genuine all-rounder, in red-ball cricket, Walter averaged over 36 between 2018-2022 and scoring his maiden century against Yorkshire in May 2022 this came after many attempts of falling just short, getting out in the 90s on three occasions before hitting the famous three-figures.

The 2022 Hundred saw Walter drafted for the first time, playing for the Manchester Originals as cover for Jamie Overton following an injury. It didn’t take him long to get used to the slightly shorter format, taking 2 wickets in his second game, this would kick-start his campaign, which would finish with him as the leading wicket-taker for the second edition of the competition.
