FE/HE

Essex Cricket have been working with the FE/HE colleges across the County to provide students with alternative opportunities to play cricket and whilst keeping active. The result – Essex Crickets FE/HE Indoor Competition. A fun and exciting format of the game that everyone can get involved in regardless of their ability or experience.

Key Stage 3/4

Inspirational schools delivery begun in 2013, working with Secondary Schools to develop a sustainable cross curriculum educational programme which could use the unique nature of cricket to work alongside school improvement plans. These curriculum based projects enhance participation habits of young people through regular clubs and competitions. The extensive range of activities on offer develops communities of young people, enhancing their experiences and creating pathways to clubs; resulting in retention within the game.

Essex Cricket currently has 6 inspirational schools dedicated to inspiring young people to choose cricket.

Key Stage 2

Essex Cricket currently has 19 dedicated projects delivering tailor made programmes through a dynamic network of recreational clubmark cricket clubs, reaching over 215 junior schools.

Providing qualified UKCC LV2 coaches to develop player pathways from junior schools through to cricket clubs. The free coaching sessions are based around up-skilling teaching staff to embed core cross curriculum provision throughout the school. The reestablishment of competitive schools cricket through level 1, 2 & 3 competitions will engage, motivate and inspire the young people.

Key Stage 1

Essex Cricket created a KS1 programme in partnership with School Game Organiser’s to allow infant schools to develop sporting provisions. The activities and games are developed around the national curriculum, allowing teachers to develop cross curriculum messages with specialist coaches (i.e. striking and fielding, chase and retrieve).

Structured curriculum sessions and workshops are offered to the schools, developing and enriching staff knowledge enabling a network of 3 tee’s competition at levels 1, 2 and 3.

2013 saw over 40 Key Stage 1 schools taking part on the scheme, working with local coaches whom have completed additional training above the minimum standards to work with the infant pupils.

Aaron Beard

Aaron Beard signed an initial two-year professional contract in 2015, after good performances for the Essex Academy.

Debuting in May 2016, Aaron first attracted attention in a Sri Lankan Tour of England game where he took wickets in each of his first two overs and saw him take four in the innings, including Wisden Cricketers of the years for 2017 and 2019: Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne.

In 2019, Beard took career-best match figures of 7/45 as Essex dominated eventual title-rivals Somerset at The Cloud County Ground, on the way to winning Division 1 in Essex’s double-winning season.

He would be deployed in white-ball cricket more often than not in 2022. Beard would take career-best T20 figures of 4/29 against Surrey, removing England-regular Jason Roy in the first over.

James Foster

James Foster’s career began with a meteoric rise to fame when he was called into the England squad for the tours to India and Sri Lanka in 2001/02 after just a handful of County Championship appearances. An injury in 2002 forced him to miss much of the domestic campaign although he was able to continue his international involvement, figuring in the Melbourne Test in December of that year. He returned to regular action in 2003 but was denied further international opportunities. Widely acclaimed as one of the world’s top keepers, James represented England impressively in the World Twenty20 in 2009 but failed to win a further Test cap.

He has taken 816 dismissals in his Essex career so far, some way behind Taylor, but so far clear in second that he will unlikely ever be beaten. In 2010 he took over full Essex captaincy duties from Mark Pettini. The limited-overs side under Foster were consistently impressive and Foster has developed into a skillful and innovative finisher.

Ryan ten Doeschate took the reins, but Foster’s consistency and longevity at the highest level was finally rewarded in 2016, as Essex clinched the Division Two title and a return to the promise land. He once again bounced back from adversity in 2017, after Adam Wheater was handed the gloves for Essex’s assault on Division One. Foster soon returned though and was an integral part of the Club’s first Championship success for 25 years, scoring valuable runs down the order and being his consistent best with the gloves in hand.

Ryan ten Doeschate

Ryan ten Doeschate joined the County in June 2003. A hard hitting batsman and skiddy bowler, he is an accomplished all-rounder and match winner for both Club and Country.

Possibly his finest innings for Essex came in 2009 when he scored an unbeaten 108 from 58 balls away to Derbyshire which secured promotion to the LV=CC Division I. He also has a reputation around the world as a Twenty20 specialist, and over the 2014/15 winter, he played in the Georgie Pie Super Smash in New Zealand, The Big Bash in Australia, and the IPL in India.

He was appointed the County’s Limited Overs captain at the start of 2014, and led the County to consecutive Quarter-Finals in both the NatWest T20 Blast, and the Royal London One-Day Cup.

In 2016, Ryan was appointed as Club Captain of Essex, taking over the role from James Foster. In his first season as Captain, ten Doeschate led the Club back to the promise land of Division One, helping the team clinch the solitary promotion slot. His team then defied all odds, and clinched a first County Championship for 25 years, with ten Doeschate an integral part of it.

Ryan etched his name in the Club’s history by captaining the side to a second Championship title in three years after a nail-biting conclusion to the 2019 season against Somerset.

He will go down as one of the best leaders in the Club’s history and stood down from the Captaincy later that year.

The Dutchman continues to be an integral part of the squad and was instrumental in the route to the Bob Willis Trophy.
