Callum Taylor

Callum Taylor is a young all-rounder who made his debut for the First XI in 2015. Due to IPL commitments and injuries, Callum was drafted into the side, and he certainly has a bright future. Primarily a batsman who bowls medium pace, Taylor comes from Norfolk, but came through the Essex Academy under the guidance of John Childs.

After his debut in 2015, Callum has played mainly Second XI cricket, but has also featured in a number of First XI squads, due to his electric fielding ability.

Dan Lawrence

Dan Lawrence made his First-Class debut in 2015 and, in only his second County Championship match, the right hander scored 161 against Surrey at the Kia Oval. This made him the third youngest ever scorer of a century in County Championship history, at the age of just 17 years and 290 days.

Further progress followed in 2016 and 2017 with the 20-year-old emerging as one of the finest talents in the English game.

In 2017, he was named as Young Cricketer of the Year by the Cricket Writers’ Club after his 761 runs at 44.76, which including three hundreds, helping the Club to the first County Championship in 25 years. The year also saw Lawrence make his England Lions debut when being selected for Lions’ training camps in both Australia and the Caribbean.

The batter was an important player in the double-winning season; with a top score of 147 (245) in the penultimate game guiding Essex to victory and setting up a final against Somerset to conclude the season.

Lawrence made his England debut in January 2021 against Sri Lanka in Galle, hitting an impressive half-century.

However, half-centuries away in India and at home to World Test Champions New Zealand could not retain his place in the side that would go on to be turned over in an away Ashes tour during the Winter of 2021. Lawrence would be recalled to face the West Indies, where he batted beautifully to score his current test high score of 91 (150); in the second test.

Tom Westley

Tom Westley progressed to the First Team squad from the Academy in 2006. A former England Under-19 player, he was still a student at Durham University when he recorded his maiden First-Class century, scoring 132 at Derby in 2009.

He staked a real claim in the first team during the 2014 season where he was named the Player of the Year, alongside the Players’ Player of the Year and the Batter of the Year. Westley recorded centuries in each format (The 5th Essex player reach the milestone), including his maiden 100 in Twenty20 cricket, when he smashed 105 against Kent at Colchester. He followed it up with 109 against Sussex at Chelmsford.

In 2015, Westley became the first player to hit two hundreds in each of the three formats for Essex.

His fantastic year was rewarded with a call-up to the England Performance programme trip over the winter to Sri Lanka and scored 100 for the Lions against South Africa in 2017, as Essex also won a first County Championship title in 25 years.

Westley shone in all three formats during the 2019 season to help the Club clinch the Specsavers County Championship and Vitality Blast trophies. His knock of 141 against Warwickshire in the Championship was his standout performance of the season, which secured a vital draw at Edgbaston.

At the start of 2020, Westley was appointed Club Captain after Ryan ten Doeschate stepped down from the role, which started with him leading the team to an inaugural Bob Willis Trophy win after overcoming Somerset at Lord’s, in which he scored a half-century in a 170-run partnership with Alastair Cook.

The club captain continued to be Essex’s stalwart at the No.3 in all formats. In 2021, Westley scored a determined 213 against Worcestershire in April, taking him to 3rd in the list of players with the most double centuries for Essex.

Identifying and developing the next generation of Essex Cricketers

Graham Gooch Essex Cricket Academy Objectives;

• To create and maintain an oversupply of cricketers that are equipped to perform for Essex CCC and England.
• To develop players that are fit, robust and mentally strong enough to cope with the demands and pressures of professional cricket.
• To develop players who become highly skilled match winners that put the team first.
• To provide a high level of support to allow players to move into other career options if cricket is not the path they choose, not everyone will become professional cricketers.

Philosophy

Developing home grown players is a key philosophy that runs through the club. The Club is very proud of the number of players who have come through the Essex CCC pathway to help win the 2017 County Championship. The Graham Gooch Essex Cricket Academy gained accreditation from the ECB in 2001/2 and since that time has developed into one of the best Academies in the Country. Currently the Essex Academy has produced 22 professional players, 16 of these have represented England U19’s and 7 have played for England Lions. Along with Alastair Cook, Tom Westley, Reece Topley and Tymal Mills, who have represented the full England team in either Test, one-day or T20 format. The Academy programme, which is underpinned by a strong Emerging Players group, is a vital part of the pathway to develop players for the rigours of professional cricket.

The Pathway

We have also developed a multiple-entry point pathway, allowing players who develop later to come into the system at various stages. Through a trusted network of scouts, the Head Scout leads the search to identify new or improved talent. The pathway also has a strong relationship supporting and working with our local Minor Counties helping them develop elite cricketers.

Our focus is to deliver a high quality programme which is specifically designed for the individual offering;
• Induction outlining the programme
• Technical and tactical coaching
• Planned match programme
• Sports psychology coaching
• Strength and conditioning programmes
• Physio support
• Medical cover
• Individual player development reviews
• PCA Development and Welfare support
• Education support
